Drama

When I was in high school, like every other high schooler on the planet, I was surrounded by drama. High school kids love drama. That's half the reason we use this website – to willingly separate ourselves from drama and immaturity. Interpersonal skills developed in school prepare young adults for working with others and managing relationships for the rest of their lives, and part of that development comes from experiencing drama in some shape or form.

But why is it that, more than 10 years since leaving high school, I am surrounded by more drama than I ever experienced in high school? Why is it that the talent of perpetuating drama seems to magnify with age?

Drama in high school tends to consist of rumor spreading and the damaging of one's reputation among friends. But when an adult is the cause of drama the intent behind the adult's actions appears far more malicious (and the results far more consequential) - defaming a person's credibility, affecting positions of power, even requiring the involvement of high priced attorneys to resolve a situation that two adults couldn't resolve on their own.

We all know somebody personally who creates problems with drama. They have a small problem or a small concern, so these self centered bundles of dick don’t fix the problem – they only compound the problem and tell everyone else who the root of the problem is. They attempt to polarize everybody against that other person. And you and I, stuck in the middle, are vilified for being impartial, disagreeing about the magnitude of the problem, or worse – not mindlessly disagreeing with the person who is at the center of blame.

I will not soapbox, nor do I see the need to elucidate the driving force behind this rant. Once one hugely dramatic episode dissolves into the non-issue it was to begin with, another hugely dramatic episode will take its place. Maybe the same person or group of people, or maybe in another facet of my daily life, whether it’s my workplace or my family or my community.

And people wonder why I spend so much time playing video games.

Don't give up on your daughter, just make sure she knows you care and are there for you. Man, a lot of what you said sounds eerily familiar.

I agree....continue to let your daughter know you care. At some point she is going to see the whole picture and will see how you fought for her. \r I am the product of SEVERAL broken marriages thanks to my mother.......and I can tell you, I love her, because she is my mother, however, with age I have come to the conclusion that she is a B**** when it comes to relationships with men and will never find one that makes her happy. The moral is: The truth is always revealed to us!!!

hmmm.... \r \r I wonder if some of the drama comes from being on the 'net. You can always find people who will agree with your opinion, even if your opinion is factually wrong (the sky is green).\r \r Today we seem to have two sides to every story. Sometimes there is grey, and we have to debate fully and with an open, reasoned mind (more on that below. But sometimes... there is no debate. \"The sky is blue.\" \"No, the sky is green.\" But noone looks out the window, and no one calls out the guy who is saying htat the sky is green. \r \r I also wonder if some of the \"dickishness\" (trying to get people to be on your side) is an offshoot of trying to find validation from your tribe. But instead of saying \"Guy... am I nuts here?\" it goes one step further to \"I'm not nuts, these OTHERS are wrong.\" to \"Those OTHERS are complete fucking dicks...\" There is a lack of introspection. \r \r I also don't think we know how to debate anymore. Again, we tend to put down others... \"I am right and this other person who doesn't agree with me is a total fucking idiot,\" \r \r My husband said somehting to me abut htis recently. He noted that I tend to do this sometimes... So he said \"Look... Pretend that this person who disagrees with your opinion is as smart as you are. Then argue your point rationally.\" Instead we tend to drop down to condescending behaviour. \"Pfft... Idiot... You might not know this, but it's in the fucking DICTIONARY. (insert eyeroll.) \" When you do this, you may lose out on a chance to learn something (cause you auto-assume that the person isn't worth learning from) and you also lower your own debate.\r \r excellent blog

that's why i was not in drama, but on the stage crew. if someone got annoying we'd just turn the mic off and say something malfunctioned.
