Canadianisms
On the way home from work yesterday I was listening to the radio in the car. They were talking about some book that was recently released outlining some of the things uniquely Canadian (Canadianisms).
There were quite a few that really suprised me. I had no idea that our neighbours to the south were not familiar with the products/phrases:
Canadianism - Meaning
chesterfield - A couch or sofa.
eavestrough - rain gutter on the eaves (edge of the roof) of a house
housecoat - robe or bathrobe
washroom - bathroom
ketchup chips - ketchup flavoured chips
butter tart - a small, pecan-pie-like tart
5-pin bowling - a smaller ball, and only 5 pins---great for kids and drunks
rye & ginger - canadian whiskey and gingerale
mickey - 375 ml. (13 oz.) bottle of liquor
Pablum - baby food
Robertson screws - Screws (for metal or wood) with a square hole in the top rather than a straight or X-shaped one
Kraft Dinner - macaroni and cheese
The ones that really struck me were Ketchup chips and Butter Tarts. How can you not have Ketchup Chips in the big ol' U.S. of A?
