bad day

Watched my 5 y/o son almost drown in the pool this evening (right before his swimming lesson). Both boys think they can swim...they can't. The love testing me---they don't believe me!!

I was a Lifeguard and WSI (Water Safety Instructor) in college. I know wtf I'm talking about kids ;-)

The panic in his eyes was awful! He was supposed to hang onto the edge of the pool but he doesn't listen---the second I took my eye off of him he pushed himself out---in the 3' -ish deep water. Kids/instructors are all around him, but they don't SEE him. He's bobbing up and down trying to get his head out enough to get breaths in--he did quite well but he was running out of energy. I almost had to jump into the pool (fully clothed), but a nice lady who I might have yelled at, grabbed him.

I can NEVER EVER forget that fear that I saw in his face!!!!!

He still wanted to take his lesson after the incident---and I'm sure if he hadn't been a bit shook up, he would have leveled up to level 3 (Swim America) with his brother.

--- I thought of my father, who at age 9 watched his younger brother drown in a river--he couldn't swim and neither could his brother---

***the NSFW is from a previous blog---it stays for few blogs so don't be mad at me for no boobs or "bad" words***

I've had that jaw lock before. Feels so tight and I was always afraid it would pop out if I forced it. Both times it was sleeping at an odd angle combined with an ear infection.....Hopefully you won't have to wait long once you get there!

I'm sorry for your loss. we lost one of our basset hounds this year as well. i suggest you make a tribute video or something on youtube. it helps to remember the fun and good times you had with your bud. our daisy used to roo unless it was raining at 530 every day for a walk.

how old is he again?\r \r kids will scare the hell out of you in a million ways. i doubt this will be the last time. important thing is to not let it get the better of you. course your history with water may make it a little different...\r \r i remember how i learned to swim: lifeguard threw me into the 12' section of the pool. i learned real fast!

That would have freaked me out!!! Both of my kids are going to swim class this year as well. My daughter is 4, but my son is 9 and has refused to learn to swim. He FINALLY started working on it last year. He had a hard time coming to grips with going underwater. Hopefully he swimming by the end of the summer.

We've had our kids in the water since they are 1 or so getting used to the water, treading water, etc. I had to fish my 2 year old daughter out of my in-laws pool and give her a few rescue breaths to get her working again. Poppa decided to put up a safety fence after that. Now all of them swim like fishes and love the pool. \r I'm sure the experience was traumatic but don't worry too much about it, especially around the kids. They don't need to be afraid of the water.

I had to jump in at a water park because my 6 year old had the same attitude. Scary as all hell, especially since those places get so packed. I'm not sure that the lifeguard would have saw her in time either.

sorry, double post... that incident made her more respectful of the water though... glad it didn't totally freak her, like you mentioned.

Scary stuff. Thankfully I have yet to see \"that look\" in either of my kids eyes.

Glad everything is ok. Teaching my 4 year old how to swim now. We have similar incidents all the time. They always think they can swim far better than they actually can. LOL Being a parent is a million times harder than I thought it would be beofre having kids
