IGN Exclusive - Halo 4 "Meltdown, Complex and Adrift" Multiplayer Map Walkthrough With 343i

Apparently this wasn't supposed to be released yet so do not be surprised if it disappears.

SORRY folks.

Videos vanished into thin air.

UPDATE: 10.16.12

Adrift now available.

Man, I love the little bit of gameplay at the beginning of Meltdown.  The weapons sound awesome.

Sorry for another big vehicle map, Dixon.

I think we're getting used to it.  At least we have Forge.  I'm okay with maps getting a little bigger.  The way I se it, they have to.

Watching the video, this map interests me the least. The map does look fun to drive but with all the ledges, tunnels and hiding spots, hog kills may be tough to get without getting rained down death from rockets and laser.

We'll see though, it might be fun.

I just watched the video.  It looked like a neat map, and I laughed pretty loudly when the IGN guy mentiones a Bungie map in comparison to this one, and the 343i doesn't say a thing.  Awkward silence!

What I'm realizing though is that the maps for Team Doubles (should the playlist even return) are pretty much nonexistant.

"But Kade there's always Forge Maps!" Yeah screw that.

I won't be the one to say Forged maps will be a solution. It could be 3 to 4 months before quality Forged maps get added.

The Community Cartographers efforts are going to continue as far as I know but who knows how well that will work. It's an all volunteer effort.

We also don't know if MLG will be mucking around controlling map selection again.

Forge maps have their place.  They can be fun, and quality.  Forge World(s) should not be most of the maps that come up in matchmaking though.  Also in Reach when new forged maps were introduced into matchmaking it was annoying.  It could end up as three maps to pick: "Blargh" "Blarg" and "blARGH" and the kicker was they'd all have the exact same picture.  So you just pick one and wait for the horror to begin, then promptly forget which one it was for next time.

Last night even, I heard the comment from a 2o2p member that they'd never played on/heard of Rasu before.  Then we finally get into the match, and there was a lot of "OHhhh this map, yeah I've played this."

So I just hope 343 finds solutions such as letting a neutral camera placed in the map be an image for the matchmaking map selection/veto screen to help differentiate on more than just the name.

I also think that if a map is so damn good that 343 decides everyone in Team Slayer playlist, or Infinity Slayer, or whatever playlist should play it, the person, the FAN who made the map should get something for it.  They pretty much have done 343's job for them, and should be compensated for it.

That bolded part. That is the problem area for Devs I think. I don't know what the realities are but giving out rewards other than implementation and a thanks seems as far as they plan to go. Bungie did have that forge contest in the first few months of REACH but that was the end of it. Dozens of maps were added afterwards to MM but no one got rewarded that I am aware of.

All I got from creating Stonehenge for Halo 3 was inclusion in monthly playlists and a non-personal thank you. I was happy enough with that. It probably is all that a fan should look forward too.

Eh.  Microsoft doesn't owe the person that wrote the next Great American Novel anything because they used Word to write it down.  It's all a labor of love anyways.  Nobody should expect anything more than an atta girl/boy and its inclusion into a playlist if the map is extremely good.

I wonder what would happen if an author made an incredible map but did not want that map to go into MM? What if there was a huge outcry from the general MM population to add it into the playlists?

I'm pretty sure 343i has the right to use anything people put in their fileshare, including creations for which they are not the author, but I wonder if they would honour the author's request in the face of popular outcry?

"Incredible" is pretty subjective.  Hypothetically speaking, that's why we have custom games.  Double hypothetically speaking, I don't think the author has any control over it whatsoever.  TOS and all that.  That's like someone posting on Facebook that quasi-legal mumbo jumbo about how someone can't re-use their words without their consent or spy on their posts.

Subjective, yes but I meant "incredible" in this hypothetical case would be that few people would doubt it.

I'm just musing about the unlikely scenario.

I don't think it's even really possible.  The TOS for either Live or the game itself covers it, I think.

Actually, there is no TOS for the game, I don't think. It'd just probably be for Live.

What if I create something new in your universe?

Distribution of your Item in any form constitutes a grant by you of a royalty-free, non-exclusive, irrevocable, transferable, sub-licensable, worldwide, license to Microsoft and any of Microsoft's partners or users to use, modify and distribute that Item (and derivatives of that Item), and use your name if we choose to, for any purpose and without obligation to pay you anything, obtain your approval, or give you credit.  And this license to Microsoft survives any termination or expiration of these Usage Rules.  This means that if you add to the game universe or expand on the story told in the game with "lost chapters" or back story or anything like that, distribution of your story or idea may appear in a future game without any compensation to you. (Sorry, but our lawyers tell us we need to do this in order to avoid frivolous lawsuits getting in the way of making more great games.) It also means we can put your Item on a Microsoft site or property like Halo Waypoint if we want to.

Yep it is true they do not have give you poop for anything you create or adjust with their systems.

But if they did remeward you in some way (say MS) points, then I think more people would be willing to give forging a try. I don't think that everyone that creates a map should be given 1600 MS pts. But if you create a map to be used in MM and say that maps gets voted to played on the most and regularly gets choosen, then kicking down say 200 MS pts. is not a lot to ask for.

I mean they (MS) gives you 20 MS pts. for filling out a survey that takes 20-30 seconds to compete. I bet on average a well desinged/playable map takes hours to design, create, test, adjust and polish.

I kind of liken it to phone apps. If someone makes a kick ass phone app, how many times have we seen the next version of a phone OS have that same app (or one just like it) "included" in it.

As a forger myself, it would be a huge honor to have them put a map I created into matchmaking. How awesome would that be?

Having thousands of players competing on my map. I really don't need anymore incentive than that.

I can tell you from first hand experience, it's like an addictive drug. If you get it once, you want more of it. If you don't, you get a little cranky.

Still, I hope you are successful.smiley

Having heart palpitations yet?

Prototyping.

I deleted half of Megalith so I could experiment with enough objects to build one half as a prototype.

I am working off a copy.

I wrote it that way in an attempt to make you think I had Halo 4 early, for Forging. wink Some do, not me.
