Torchlight XBLA - Initial Impressions

Runic Games' 2009 Steam RPG hit finally comes to XBLA this coming Tuesday.  See what all the hype is about...

When you think of Role Playing Games, a few titles probably come to mind. Diablo and World of Warcraft are among the top games out there. Torchlight has the feel of both. The graphics are on the cartoon side while the actual game play is like that of Diablo. When you start off the game you can pick from a small selection of classes. There is a ranged hunter type, melee, and caster. You automatically get to pick a pet to do some of the labor for you. There is a wolf, bobcat and a dragon. Once you get everything situated in the main screen you can then start your game and move into the town area.

There are a few quest givers to start you off and you are pretty much thrown into the first area of killing bliss. The killing seems pretty easy at first, but I soon learned that I needed to upgrade my armor and weapon because I wasn't doing that much damage. It took a little getting used to all the buttons and functions. I took about 10 minutes figuring out how to make room in my bags because they got full pretty fast. You can actually swap things with your pet and it can hold quite a lot of items for you.

The nice thing about this game is that they give you several chances to port back to town and get more quests, sell and enchant items, and even buy more armor if you'd like. I have to say that I am glad I didn't get to finish the game in three days.  I would have been a bit disappointed if you could finish it that fast. The only down side I found to the game was getting used to the controls. I have always been a PC RPG player and if you are a big WoW player than you will have to do some adjusting to get used to it.

Overall the game was fun and had a great story line. I never wanted to stop playing but the sleepiness took over and I eventually passed out. Most importantly this game is not a cake walk and you will be thinking on your toes to kill named boss's. There are so many elements to this game that it will surely have you playing for days!
