New Releases: Week of May 4, 2015

May the 4th be with you! I’ve always thought that sounded like something an overzealous Star Wars fan with a lisp would shout while wearing a Stormtrooper costume in line to meet Mark Hamill at a convention. Unsurprisingly, there are no new Star Wars games releasing this week: looks like Disney missed a golden opportunity to be a fucking cornball. This week we have an Indie “Most Likely to Succeed” candidate, miniature golf goes steampunk, a JRPG that nobody here is going to play, Nazis, and a GOTY edition with a familiar “ring” to it.

Ether One
Platform: PS4
Release Date: May 5

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPEzYmbCET0[width=650,height=366]

This lantern-holding simulator is a port of the PC cautionary tale of the dangers of using ether at an isolated lighthouse. This one is available for download starting Tuesday.

High Strangeness
Platform: WiiU
Release Date: May 6

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lk7vPqMFwEU[width=650,height=366]

An adventure of the “boy and his cat” variety follows Boyd and his ability to switch from 8-bit to 16-bit graphics, which is presumably exactly what the WiiU can handle. This one drops Wednesday.

Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor GOTY Edition
Platforms: XB1, PS4, PC
Release Date: May 5

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rbOTQhasnM[width=650,height=366]

Shadow of Mordor was a pretty good game, but it wasn’t game of the year. I would expect some DLC and a few extras thrown in. I would not expect to pay sixty bucks.

Remnants of Isolation
Platform: Windows PC
Release Date: May 1

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlWfUxKkPeU[width=650,height=366]

This highly anticipated indie darling is an old-school RPG set in a world where those with magical abilities are isolated from society for the greater good. This one is available for download on Steam right now, and if my PC wasn’t such a piece of shit, I’d be playing it right now.

Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker
Platform: 3DS
Release Date: May 5

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DN9dko80FiQ[width=650,height=366]

If you have a 3DS and you aren’t particularly susceptible to epileptic seizures, then you probably still won’t play this game. I don’t blame you.

Vertiginous Golf
Platforms: PC, Mac, Linux
Release Date: May 6

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nbXCXyVBJM[width=650,height=366]

It looks like a steampunk mini golf game with a course editor and player customization. Might be worth looking into if you’re the Virtual Pool/Putt Putt aficionado.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood
Platforms: XB1, PS4, PC
Release Date: May 6

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlxxcSQwgY8[width=650,height=366]

A $20 downloadable prequel for Wolfenstein: The New Order, yes please.Get a taste of Blazkowicz before his shrapnel-induced coma. This is a stand-alone expansion, so you needn’t own the new game to play the prequel.
