Are Games Showing Too Much

Wed, 02/27/2013 - 12:23 — BlowMonkey

It is an interesting place I find myself having played video games for more than 25 years (more than half my life). I’m in a place where I’m pretty unimpressed with most of the games that have come out. Most recently I have acquired Assassin’s Creed 3 and Far Cry 3. I love the Far Cry games (even a huge fan of FC 2 – owned it on both consoles) and a huge fan of the Assassin’s Creed series (and a huge fan of anything to do with American Revolution era) but when I got these games (both of which I wanted very badly) and fired them up I was like “meh”. And there is nothing wrong with either of these games – they look amazing and perform great etc.

I think the issue is me. You have to know a little about me for this to make sense. I hate movies (generally) and I don’t watch TV (other than sports) really. I’d rather read a book – or play a video game than watch a movie or TV series. That’s not to say there aren’t some movies that I love and some TV shows that I can tolerate but really given the choice with my time I’d rather play guitar, do art, read a book or play video games and board games. I’ve never really thought about why this is. I chalked it up to most movies / tv shows being mindless and boring (which I still think is a big part of it). But I think more and more that I need to be an active participant in my entertainment. I need to be able to influence it and I have to be able to use my imagination and creativity in order for it to be worth my while.

Ok well playing AC3 or FC2 I would be given this freedom right? Well yes sort of. But what I’ve come to realize is that I’m just doing the same thing I’ve done before for hundreds of hours in the previous iterations of these games as well is in all the games that have come out in the last few years. Mainstream gaming (even Multiplayer which is typically my favorite type of gaming) has just become very sameish. Like yeah – I’ve done that. A lot of the AAA games lack any type of creativity. They just have “better graphics”, some performance enhancements and maybe like one little tweaked game mechanic that makes them somewhat interesting but they just keep turning out the same thing over and over again. In addition to that I think I’m a little burned out on the game showing me everything. Similar to how I like books better than movies. A book lets you create the world in your head. I tell you that the lady was wearing “a red dress”. You would think of a red dress that would most likely be different from the red dress I picture in my mind. In books we fill the gaps with our own creativity and life experiences. Whereas in a video game or movie – they show you exactly what they want. The red dress is very defined in a movie or video game – no room for your creative input. I find this to be not very satisfying at all – it has become boring.

I don’t think this is to say that I’m going to skip all the high end AAA games or anything but I’m certainly putting a lot more of my effort into indie games. I find indie game developers are putting more effort into innovative game play. They typically don’t have the art studio to be able to compete with the AAA games but they can create some interesting mechanics and try doing interesting things with their games. I’m having a lot of fun seeking out and trying all these innovative little games. The most fun I’ve had has been with an ASCII graphics alpha game called Dwarf Fortress. It has been called the most complex game in the world (I don’t know if that is accurate but it is certainly very deep) and yet it has these simple old school ASCII graphics, which even for me initially was a hurdle. I didn’t think I could get into it. In addition to the ASCII graphics hurdle the UI is pretty confusing. I don’t find it as bad as a lot of people seem to find it – but it can be somewhat convoluted and inconsistent (Tarn Adams (he’s the Developer for DF) has even said as much). Yet after playing for a few hours – you become engrossed in the game your imagination is going full tilt – I can picture the whole fortress and all my dwarfs and animals. I spent 4 hours on Saturday night just looking at this ASCII soup on the screen and I totally lost myself in it. It is a fabulous experience especially given all the super unique and crazy game mechanics in the game and how they create these situations and stories that weren’t put in place – they evolved from the AI and systems kind of interacting with each other in the game.

So with all the hype about a new PS4 and a new XBOX etc. I find myself more drawn to the OUYA. Show me what the indie devs are doing. They have something to say that is worth listening too. I’m 100% confident that the next Killzone or Halo or Call of Duty is going to look and perform amazingly on these new machines – heck I might not even be able to tell if it is real life or a video game but I don’t think it will matter. They’ll be showing me games I’ve already played (albeit in a better looking format) and / or games as they want me to see them instead of letting me have some creative input and that frankly bores me.

I think anyone who has played Minecraft or Terraria or any of the Roguelike ASCII games knows what I’m talking about. The graphics don’t make the game – as a matter of fact high end graphics might actually detract from the gaming experience. I’ll take emergent gameplay and the ability for me to get lost in my own head over high fidelity and “tried and true” game play mechanics.

Now if you’ll excuse me I’m going to put some Nine Inch Nails on and play some Cataclysm or Caves of Qud and get lost in a grimy desolate world.

For me it's not so much the showing me too much, it's more the lack of innovation and the iteration of tasks going from one game to another.  The problem with consoles now is that it's big business, it costs too much to bring a quality game out on these systems and on store shelves that publishers mandate that they want their game 'more like call of duty'.   That's why we got the stupid humans to fight against in Aliens:CM, sega wanted it to be more like COD.

I'm not so much drawn to OYUA though i am happy to see that platform come to market.  I am however being drawn back to PC gaming.   There's a lot more thought and innovation going on in the PC gaming space than the console space has seen in 5 years.

The new consoles are just going to make the problem worse.  Higher graphic fidleity means more expense which means less risk and innovation.  Also at least on the 360 side, i think they've lost a bit too much focus now developing a living room media center rather than a GAME machine.  Sony at least at this point seems like they've clued into that and are making the PS4 focused on gamers first.  We'll have to wait and see what microsoft has in store but the specs on these next consoles is very very similar.  The difference is going to be which console innovates games.  If Microsoft is thinking intergrated kinect is going to innovate games the way gamers want them innovated, they're going to fail.  And your casual audience that are using their 360 for Netflix and Hulu have no reason to upgrade to Xbox 720, it's nto going to do that stuff any better than the 360.

You guys are right in line with my thinking. I have a buddy on my friend list that is always playing new indie games. He really loves them and I can see why. While he is playing with fresh new ideas, I have been playing the same stuff for years. It took me awhile to realize it but that is why I want a gaming computer.

I'm not interested in having a 'new' experiance with everything I play.

I want to be entertained. I get that with big budget stuff and I get it with some games that some people don't even consider games.

That said, we'll hook up on whatever (and whenever) the ouya crawls out of it's hole. And I know I told you to follow the Bolts. Stop. They're getting killed now.

Now go buy Journey. I think it's on sale for $8. I've played maybe 10 hours but it will pop into my head every now and again. Very powerfull symbolism if you let it take over.

You seem to fall into the very creative person category. If that's true then I am not surprised at your commentary. Technological advancements in the entertainment business will continue unabated. The publics appetite for high end products is not going to stop either. Indie producers will also continue to produce consumable products. They are in a delima though. Should they hit a home run then they are immediately catapulted to mainstream high end product creation. I see Indie products with a jaded eye. Yes, they have to be unique but they really just want to be at the top of the food chain. So I find Indie products limited in value for me personally but I understand how their existance benefits me and my needs.

Oh yeah I am for sure a creative person.

I have to disagree with this statement however "Should they hit a home run they they are immediately catapulted ot mainstream high end product creation.   I see Indie products with a jaded eye. Yes, they have to be unique but they really just want to be at the top of the food chain."  If you look at Jonathan Blow (created of Braid) or Team Meat (Super Meatboy) or even Notch (Minecraft) or Phil Fish (Fez) there has been no indication that now that they've made millions that they are going corporate or moving in a different direction other than the ones they want.

After the very successful Braid Jonathan Blow just started his next game the Witness.  He didn't hire an army of people to work on it, he didn't go to EA and submit a resume.  He just kept on keeping on - doing what he wanted to do.  Edmund McMillen released the Binding of Issac after Super Meat Boy - this thing couldn't be further from the mainstream if it tried - it's 100% Edmund McMillen like he's always been.....flies in poop, used tampons all around crazyness.   Team Meat is now working on Mew Genics......a cat lady simulator lol  They didn't run out and build the best FPS with a team of 500 people.  They kept it real - stayed true to their vision.

To be fair there is some seperation in what people see as "indie" or even what it means to some people.   And I am sure there are TON of indie teams that are just looking to get a foot in the door.  Those aren't the teams whose games I am seeking out.

You don't get much more "top of the food chain" than these guys and yet they are still keeping it real.

If you get a chance watch Indie Game the Movie and/or Minecraft the Story of Mojang.  You'll get some better insight into what these type of people are about.   The Minecraft one is free to download and pay what you want type of deal (they put it on the piratebay themselves for people to download.  Both very good movies.

I will join  you in the Nine Inch Nails indie party!  Trent's gone more indie with business model too so maybe he'll score something other than Quake! :p

I think a lot of it is indies are free to do what they want without a comittee homogonizing everything to lowest public common denominator appeal.  I'm really interested to see how I'll feel about Bioshock.  While its got the backing of 2K and is clearly a AAA, Irrational is a fairly small local to me studio.  The gaming community was all up in arms about the cover art and they came out and said they wanted to attract more casual fans with it because they knew the people complaining were going to buy it anyway.  I liked the first game because of the story and the art.  That carried me through the repetitiveness of killing the same stupid splicers over and over.  I hope they didn't lose sight of that with this one!

I also find a lot of times with AAAs the new ones just make me want to go back and play the old ones instead.  Like any time I start a New Super Mario Bros game for the Wii or WiiU I feel like I'd rather be playing Mario 3.  Not sure how they could get around that...

Vegetarians who watch hockey can't have opinions.

Play more fighting games.

Miss you bro, come back for some rb6 Vegas.

I like the idea of indy games, but not so much the actual practice of em. They're a neat idea, but when you get an indy full price game it's not only a total crapshoot as to if it'll be good or not, very often they don't last more than 9 or so hours and you're done. If I'm spending $60 on a game I expect to get a certain amount of play out of them. And they may be more of the same old, same old, but I got nearly 100 hours out of AC3 and even more than that from FarCry 3, not counting the multiplayer on both.

I agree with Biznass -- Go buy Journey.  It's one of the best gaming experineces I had in long time and you can play through in one sitting.

It will be interesting to see what the PS4 brings, if they really will open things up for more indie developers to get titles published on PSN.

Yea!  A call to action to usher in a rebirth of creativity in the gaming industry!  You're right, my monkey friend:  more pixels do not (necessarily) make for a great game.  Pretty graphics are nice, of course, but innovative, fresh games like Journey (nods to Biz) and -- at the time-- Eternal Darkness are where it's at.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have copyright protection, dang it!

very interesting, let me tell you my story into gaming and creativity. Since i was young i found i had patience to draw things good enough that i would even sell a picture of drawn (real example) porche cars in a cartoony yet detailed quality (quality has always been something ive come to love) and would actually sell my pictures so that i can buy "limber" (basically frozen juice in a plastic cup). Now you would think i would grow from this as far as the buisness part of it went. Ive drawn wolves with high hair details, faces, including copying an image my grama had of jesus onto a "pastel" (<spanish food) wrapper which is basically a type of wax paper that wraps around the "pastel" before submerging in water too cook, anyway so i had no type of paper and that was my closest to a surface to draw on. Why i chose to draw jesus, i still ask myself now a days for theres a multitude of things i believe in. The selling and drawing on whatever surface happened while i was in Puerto rico. so i never really sold art work for nothing more than $1, it was interesting to just see what ppl thought of a finished product once i handed it to them and they wouldnt have to even say anything, i almost knew instantly how they felt. that being said ive played games for many years and always had an eye for quality, mechanics not as much as i do now tho, i played games like street fighter with little knowledge that games could be modified! my creativity im more than sure woulda blown me away if i knew i could have done this, so any way, i gamed and gamed playing only what the world put infront of me untill i got into high school and took computer technology and data comunication, from there i learned all i needed to know to still be able to keep up with tech even 9 yrs later without going to college for it, the net was and still is my schooling continued. I eventually got me a laptop with a gforce 9150 go or something like that. Down this technical path i found out about diferent things ex: emulators, mods, sandboxes and such! when i saw a little program called MUGEN, i was like...why didnt i find this out before? lol, it just took me deeper in gaming when i saw chun li, matter fact, the whole street fighter character base system fight against fuking family guys and you can just imagine the shit theyve done. So i only just played the "mugens" i never actally moded one up my self since i was in the half life era and figured i might as well move on, but never forgeting what i experienced. So, half life, great game i believed, all type of mods including one called "Garrys mod" where you could jump in the virtual world of the game and use its own files to create your own world, im in love at this point, not because i was living a bad life but i found a way to express virtually not just on a 2d surface. I not only got into "Garrys mod" but i also changed things like skins in the actual games "skins are a characters actual art aside from how it was shaped, im saying color of things:clothes, skin tones, hair etc" When i switched her original skin for one such as a naked one which would literaly make her naked i proceeded to do this with a couple of games "not just nudity tho, but i admit mostly" lol. Then crysis came out! Sandbox for the cryengine was my thing, but considering i still dont have a system powerfull enough to create multiple process ive held off on it a but, yet i did add texture mods of high quality and including in crysis 2 installing dx11 settings which didnt come out till after its release! i made games look how i wanted to make em look! well with whatever mods i could find online, and i did get a little into programs like Maya, or before that Rhino 3d, mudbox bla bla bla..hard shit to learn and im still far from knowing how to create my own personal mods. In Unreal tournament 3 i didnt just kill the pc that was tryna kill me, i killed "Peanut butter jellie guys" lol epic to me i mean whats a game if it isnt fun right, and also graphical challenging as well as easy. theres plenty more i can jump into but i think ill let you guys ask me anything im open to help anyone look for what ive always been looking for, and its......just write to me already! lol
