Video Review of Netflix Watch Now Beta

by doodirock| Published: Tuesday, January 30 @ 03:04:40 EST
Yes we know it's not video game news, but we thought some of our members might be interested in the new Netflix Watch Now beta. In case you didn't know, Netflix has spent over 40 million dollars developing this new service to stream movies directly to your PC via your basic web browser. At the time of this beta, only IE6 and above is working, but we are sure other browsers will become compatible soon. Currently the beta offers roughly 1,000 titles available, which Netflix plans to expand to 5,000 this year.

The great part of this new service is that it will work in conjunction with your current Netflix plan. Each dollar you spend per month is convert to an hour of view time. Even nicer, is the fact that you are only charged as the movie is playing. This means fast forwarding, rewinding, or pausing will not cause you to incur any charges. Even better, the service is %100 streaming which means no data is stored on your hard drive. You simply click play and in seconds, your watching the video.

The basis of the video capture is simply to show you the interface and not actual visual quality. Because we had to compress the screen cast, the video will not look as good as it does if you were to use the service yourself. Having been invited to the beta myself, I can tell you that the quality far exceeded my expectations when seen on the "Great" setting. Not all networks can handle this setting so quality will vary depending on available bandwidth.

The Watch Now feature is currently available for select customers, but will slowly expand to the rest of its subscribers over the next six months. Now check out the video!

Though I am a member of Netflix and like the concept, I am afraid this is going to be another service to drain my bandwith. How much more can the internet take before online gaming is unplayable?

Do the streamed movies at the High Res support 5.1 Surround Sound if you have a capable sound card in your PC and a Surround Sound system? For me the lack of that feature would be a huge detractor.

Thanks
