PS3 is HDMI cable free

Sony's official PlayStation 3 site confirms that the HDMI cable needed to use the HDMI port on the PS3 isn't included.

For those planning to purchase the elite (read: USD $600) version of the PlayStation 3 and utilize the HDMI port that comes equipped on that version of the console, plan to pay for your own cable.

Although it is typical for a company to ship a box with the lowest common denominator cable set, I would consider the "high-end" PlayStation 3 above those standards. Sony doesn't seem to believe this and will be shipping a standard video cable to work with average TV's.

This is an important consideration for those planning to get this console home and plug it in their HDMI port on their HDTV's. Plan on spending upwards of $30.00 on one of these bad boys.

You'll probably be asked to buy a "good" cable (after all your trying to get "good" quality video right?) and step up to a 4' Monster HDMI cable or something of equivalent value. This little baby sells for USD $149.99, so if you're landing USD $600.00 on a console, what's another USD $150 anyway? Well, its a lot.

If you want a top level HDMI cable you may be looking at $500.00 - but a search on froogle.google.com turned up a few for USD $8.00 and up. Personally, I wouldn't go trusting a USD $8.00 cable to hold up to the quality, but a USD $35.00 might do the trick. If your not a total audio/video fanatic just keep it simple for now.

There are quite a few Monster distractors out there. They feel that Monster is more about hype than quality. These are the same people who that if you mention Bose, their heads will actually spin around.

Then again, if you're stupid enough to spend $150 for a $8 HDMI cable...

Remember, HDMI is digital, the signal will either get through or it won't, unlike analog, where high quality could make a difference. You notice that no one can tell the difference between a $5 USB cable and a $50 one, aside from the fact that the $5 may fail earlier.

For all your cabeling needs check out MonoPrice.com Excellent quality and very affordable. I got a 25ft HDMI for ~$28USD. I always laugh when I walk into BestBuy and see a 4ft HDMI Monster cable for $100+.

As a musician they've come in handy with their "no questions asked" return policy. It is probably more important for music because you spend a lot of time recabling, moving around, etc. So when your acoustic guitar is wired up and you move past the cords distance (or its in a nest of ugly cord hell) and breaks the contacts you can bring it back and get a new one.

For a stationary object where the cord is probably going to be behind the TV forever? Uh, maybe not a big deal.

However, there is a difference even with digital when you're dealing with distance. For those that have their entertainment systems (or PS3's) close to the TV an $8.00 cable may be ok, but when your talking 12 feet or so (to get around the carpet, or through the walls) a higher quality cord will maintain signal due to better shielding. You want a nice shield if your crossing it through electrical wiring, etc.

But, those might be the exceptions - not the rule.

I like monster if I need a cable quick. Yeah, expensive but you know it is good quality. They do make good quality. The thing is if you know what makes a high quality cable you know what to look for in other brands.

What a load of crap. Spend 600.00 bucks on a system, and sony can't contract with a manufactuer to stick a hdmi cable in the pro system!!! BS!!!

I would say they keep shooting themselves in the foot, but they have done it so many times so far, I think they will have to start aiming for their hands!!
