Xbox 360 Gets A HD-DVD Drive!

by doodirock| Published: Thursday, January 05 @ 00:25:46 EST
Yep, that's right. At yesterdays CES keynote speech, Bill Gates announced that the Xbox 360 will get an HD-DVD external player sometime this year. No news on the price or exact time yet, but it looks like Sony will no longer be the only product with High Definition media players. The biggest question will be how much the final price is. Since standalone players for HD-DVD are coming in at around 700-1000 this should be an interesting alternative. Read more to see the MS press release. From the release: "Building on Xbox 360 leadership in high-definition experiences, the company announced plans to deliver a new Xbox 360 external HD DVD drive in 2006. The new drive will offer millions of Xbox 360 owners the ability to easily enjoy HD DVD movies and will provide consumers with even more choices for experiencing high-definition content, in either physical or digital form. I wonder why they(Microsoft) did not decide to adopt the Blu-Ray technology? ;-) Yeesh... looks like the console and format wars are just beginning! Funny though... even with the demise of betamax, Sony is so large they will survive. I guess if you look at the hugh PSP Movies that seem to fill the shelves at BEST-BUY, i guess it really doens;t cost them that much much money to put out old movies that have already been sold over and over, and over again. But I am sure that we will all be in line when the Star Wars I-VI HD-DVD Super Jedi Edition Collection Set will be out some time before 2010 I'm sure.

Do you think MS really cares who wins the HD format war? I don't. MS wants to lease the content from the studios and make money by being the service that provides it to you by streaming it to your hard drive and then take it away. That way they make money in perpetuity. Physical media as a means of distributing entertainment is going to go away in the not so distant future.

It will look great along with all the other XBox 360 accessories and games on the shelf at Best Buy. Maybe one day they may sell this mysterious 360 everyone is talking about to use that stuff with.

this reminds me sega CD.... i think MS's hddvd plan (holding off) will be worthwhile... and from what i'm reading and seeing @ CES, it looks like MS has a UWB trick of their sleeve.. using Vista/Media Center to UWB-stream HD content to 360 mmmm gadgets ;-) guess time will tell

Blue-Ray for PS3 (Score: 1)

So, if a stand alone Blue-Ray HD-DVD player is $700-1000, I can't imagine what the cost of the PS3 will be. Do they really think parents are just going to plop down $1000 for a game system? Hell, I wouldn't do it myself even if they owned the Halo franchise. (Thank God that's not true!) Cuda
