360 shortages & game delays related?

by Tank| Published: Thursday, December 15 @ 15:18:29 EST
As many of you know, i read a CRAP LOAD of Xbox 360 information a day. It's a bit of an addiction. After reading over more and more information about block buster games being held back, I have come up with a theory. To give you some background on this theory, Microsoft's head chief Ballmer has said they can't build enough boxes because the processors aren't readily available. He goes on to say that by March, things should be looking much better and that they had even considered delaying the launch due to processor shortages. We then come to see that most of the anticipated 360 exclusive titles, Gears, GRAW, Oblivion all slipped out of the launch window once shortage rumours started. Now in close timing to admitting the processor shortage, all these great titles have now also slipped to March when 360's should no longer be in short supply.

Given the amount of money it now takes to make a truly next gen title, I'm sure these guys want the most return for their development, who wouldn't. So why release a great game now when your market reach is so small considering there are only 300-400,000 360's at launch in the USA compared to millions of Xbox's.

Instead why not push off the release date to have more time to polish the game and release it to a larger potential market. These 3 titles are going to be the first ones to really show off the 360's graphic power so the dollar amount to make them is going to be quite a bit higher than an xbox game. Plus they're exclusives so they can only make their return off the 360 market.

So would it be far fetched to say that the delays and the console shortages are really going hand in hand? Could also be a reason why there's nothing decent coming out now between launch and March. This would give game makers even more time to polish games and fix any possible bugs. After all, we know that one bad game can spell bankruptcy for a studio. What do you think?

i don't know much about economics and marketing, etc, but this sounds like a viable theory. at least that's what i would do if i were in that position. make ur game even better + make more $$ when you release it = sound business plan. lol

I have been following the 360 pretty much also Tank.I have also notice some stores not giving the 360 there own space. They have mixed in regular xbox stuff. Some of these stores do not have the room for stuff that's not going to sell.I have also seen a store only carry a couple of games also. I am in agreement with you on this. Why put out a game when your not going to make your mony back until they get more units out.

It makes sense to me. I bought PDZ, Quake, and Gun with my 360 on launch day (I also had Oblivion paid for...but I won't talk about that) and I've already completed PDZ and Gun. Once I finish Quake, there aren't any games out there that I want until March when Ghost Recon, Gears, and Oblivion hit the shelves.

I would believe it more if Oblivon had launched on pc already but it hasn't both versions were held back. MS have mentioned this "launch corridor of time" when games are coming out that seems to span about 3 months and change. But hey I could be completely wrong :)

As with any franchise is it best to release both at one time for maximum hype. Staggering the release will only cause problems with the PC buyers feeling like they received a "beta" item.

I also agree. I belive microsoft just wanted to push some boxes out there before PS3. I don't mind the waiting for new games if they will be good online. I no longer care obout story lines. COD2 could be really good if they were to fix the online issues. And it is true about beeing carefull with bad titles. Return To Castle WolfEinstein was great as a first game shooter online. They plan to come back on the 360 but Activision did a bad job with COD2 online, so before I go and buy Wolfeinstein I be doing some research.

Developers are also probaly thinking about how retailers feel. They can't sell games to customers that do not have a 360, not because they don't want them, but because they can't get it. They don't want to stock games that can't sell in quantity because the platform has not yet been produced in quantity.

I believe that the delays are related and would like to extend support for the theory a bit. Two things happen when a game is introduced. First, if the game was over-hyped and does not live up to its billing. Word rapidly spreads and sales drop like crazy. Then the retail price comes down to compensate. Second, if the game has little replay value (i.e. no MP or extended story), then it quickly ends up on the secondary market in decent quantities. Therefore, if they introduce a game now, the "future" owners of 360s could probably pick it up used in March... again depressing sales. Nice Job TANK.

I think this is a good theory and I think Byron's point is very strong. Especially the part about used games entering the market before most people have the console to even buy it new. Good article.

Makes sense to me. At this point the launch of XBox 360 has not happened for the vast majority of gamers. I feel kind of in limbo. Don't really want to buy new games for XBox because that is money I could use to buy a 360, but I would like a new game or two. Guess it's time to compromise and buy a few used games to hold me over. Isn't that what one comment said? The new games may be delaying because their expensive development costs will never be recouped when the majority of gamers can buy the games they put out now in March pre-owned? I imagine it's a little like the battle for movie studios to reach a balance between theatrical release and DVDs. Also used cars.
