BL2 Weekend Special Event starting today

Looks like new shotguns are spawning in-game. The Tweet says they're in 'specific' areas but the community announcement says nothing about that. So hopefully the gearbox forums will help narrow the search grid.

Gear up for the release of Sir Hammerlock’s Big Game Hunt -- the third campaign add-on for Borderlands 2, arriving January 15 -- with special in-game events this weekend!
The festivities begin today, January 11, with Vault Hunters reporting an influx of powerful shotguns throughout Pandora. To join in the fun, simply boot up Borderlands 2 while connected to the internet and start looting before the supply runs dry -- based on current conditions, expect the excess to be exhausted on Saturday, January 12 at 10:55AM CST / 4:55PM GMT (What time is that for me?).

A few additional pieces of information from GBX official forum posts

The overall rarity of the shotguns you'll find should be higher than normal for the next day or so.

Vending machines are not included in this event. Killing enemies and looting chests should be the strategy you use to get more rare shotguns.

The prompt at the main menu said "Bug Hunt", so I'm guessing today is Varkids. They were dropping some pretty nice green and blue shotguns.

Good eye. Nothing specifically tied to Varkids in today's event, but there are more days to come...

The increased rarity in shotgun drops applies to all areas in the game, all enemies, and all bosses.

I'm down for some Warrior and Terra farming over the weekend. Probably will hit the treasure room too just for giggles.

Too bad they fucked up shotguns with the bee nerf so badly, they're almost worthless right now on the 360 versoin of Borderlands 2. THey fixed the problem on the PC version but of course we have to wait months to get our patch.

I think the drops will change at different times during the weekend, looks like a BL2 weekend.

I've found a few items so far playing a few hours fri/sat. Stupid thing is I didn't find a better shotgun on 'shotgun friday', but i found two better than I had shotguns on saturday, nade day. I did find one decent nade on saturday, a 68k damage slagga, i'd been looking for a slagga but never found one with decent enough dmg.

Other than that, I founda 16.5k damage Jakobs pistol and a double penatrating explosive legendary pistol, also a 30k dmg jakobs sniper besides the two shotties.

Considering i already have a lot of the best gear in the game, it's nice to actually find stuff a bit better than I already have. Sure could use more storage though!

Looking forward to seeing what Sunday will bring. Hopefully shields, hide of terramorphus is gonna be had to beat tho for a shield.

The last day is Varkid focused, they'll morph into the boss varkid guy faster and it has a higher chance of dropping the legendary gun when killed.

The final day of festivities is upon us, as Pandora grows more dangerous (but also more rewarding) for those adventuring online alongside two or more players in True Vault Hunter Mode* -- should the varkids infesting Tundra Express, Caustic Caverns or Natural Selection Annex survive long enough to enter the pod state multiple times, they stand a far greater chance of morphing into the fearsome Vermivorous the Invincible. However, those that emerge victorious in their struggles against Vermivorous the Invincible also face greater rewards as the legendary Norfleet weapon is far more likely to appear upon his defeat.
