Game of Thrones : Part 2

Thu, 05/24/2012 - 09:03 — Habu06

I posted something about Game of Thrones the video game a little while back.  I haven't seen anything posted here about it and now, since it has been released,  I decided to give my impressions and give a quasi review.

First, a disclaimer. I like the book series and the HBO series. If you are not familiar with either, the game will most likely not appeal to you. The whole basis of the story lies in the time right before the book Game of Thrones begins. There are a couple characters people will recognize from the series.  The game developer was able to use those actors from the HBO series for character modeling and some voice work.  The game story is actually pretty good with some twists to keep things interesting again, if you're familiar with the book series.

The game is a basic RPG. You play as two characters, a veteran memeber of the Nights Watch  and a Red Priest who has come home to reclaim his birthright. There is no independent character development. You can designate various traits at the beginning the basics; strength, agility, endurance ect, ect. and assign special attacks for combat. You get equipment as go through the game and can switch out weapons, armor and potions. The usual standard RPG stuff. The two characters follow seperate stroy lines but eventually converge towards the end to wrap up the story. You jump back and forth between the two in seperate chapters which  very familiar if you read the books.

There is no free roam as in Skyrim or Fallout  which was dissapointing. You follow a scripted story. There are situations where you get to make some decisions through your responses in certain situations, but even those are usually limited to only two or three choices.

Want to Meet Me???

Wed, 03/14/2012 - 18:21 — Habu06

No, not me. It's the pop up add I get on this site. Everytime I log on there's this little add on the right hand side featuring the photo of an extremely attractive young woman asking if I would like to meet her and lucky me, she's only 3.5 miles from where I live!!!

Game of Thrones on XBOX?

Sat, 02/25/2012 - 11:50 — Habu06

I came across a news release for the video game Game of Thrones which is scheduled for release on Xbox (and PS3)   this on the interwebs yesterday. Its based on the George R.R. Martin book series A Song of Ice and Fire and the HBO series. Yes, I know, you knew that already. But, for those who might not have known it gives them a refernce point. The  release mentioned it comes out in May 2012. Since that is after the end of the Mayan calender and therfore the end of the world, it might not matter.  The thing is, it hasn't gotten a huge amount of buzz.  From what I've seen, it looks like a little of  Skyrm / Assasins Creed / Alamur / ect. ect. ect. thrown together.

That  made me think of something Cryptic Cat mentioned the other day. Primarily the lack of inovation in game design primarily as it applies to RPG style games. I don't know how good this Game of Thrones game could be since there has not been a whole lot of publicity.I know the HBO series probably was the incentive to make the game in order to cash in the popularity of the series but after reading  the books, I don't think the depth of the story can be transferred  to a video game.

I will be curious to see the reviews for Game of Thrones when it comes out. I know there has to be some type of quest line in order to move the game along, but I don't want another go here - get this -bring it back- and repeat sequence game play. Me, I'd like to go North of the Wall and do some exploration.

Had a meeting the other day and as part of it, we were required to partake in a wonderful little presentation about something called a Continued Offsite Operation Plan which was the brainchild of FEMA or Homeland Security so you know it had to be top notch.Basically, in the event of a major catastrophe, there should be a contingency plan for various organizations to continue to function and provide services. So, when all hell breaks loose you can work off site and not have to take a personal day or blow off coming in to work. Sounds good, right?

So, the power point tourture session begins. If anyone who reads this gives power point presentations and reads the damn slide to people, Stop it.Seriously. Everyone who is sitting there probably knows how to read. The ability to read is a job requirement. So if you stand there and read verbatum what is on the slide, just know there are people in the audience that are thinking evil thoughts about you. Another thing, stop with the stupid ice breaker video clips. We've seen them. Yes Honey Badger was funny the first ten times I saw it. Ha Ha. Honey Badger. He's badass. O.K.

I'm digressing. The presentation goes on until Mr. Enthusiasim mentions preparing a go bag for the office. My ears perk up. A go bag? now, we're talking!

For those of you who don't know what a go bag is, go look it up it's also called a bug out bag, a SHTF bag and a E&E bag. We'll wait.....

O.K. so he mentions go bag. Now, if there is ever anything that can get a conversation going amongst survivalist types, it is talking about  go bags and what should be in them. That is not a discussion for here though.  Anyway, he starts to explain the items that should be in an office go bag. I'm thinking..

He, on the other hand starts mentioning things like frequently used forms on a thumb drive, manuals, paper, office supplies(pens and highlighters- highlighters?- but no red stapler) and oh yes, personal hygene products. (thats a shaving kit and toilet paper) he also recommended extra clothing and showed a photo of dress shirt and a tie as an example.Yeah right, the last thing I'm going to have in a go bag is a neck tie.

So, when the Zombie Apocalypse arrives or a nationwide Katrina style disaster strikes, know that there will be people out there ready to file their weekly TPS reports off site and will still look proffesional while doing it. Me, I'll be calling in sick and strapping on my armor made from used tires. ( insert Fallout 3 reference here)

It's Clanniversary again

Fri, 12/09/2011 - 14:18 — Habu06

This weekend marks the four year anniversary of the Porkchop Platton or PCP, as it's more commonly  known.  For the newer people on 2old2play, it was a clan that use to be on this site, but moved on after a bitter divorce.

But enough of that, it's Clanniversary!!  It's been an interesting year.  Memebership is up, and everything is going great.  There is a mega mixer planned this weekend with some other clans which hopefully will  have a good turnout. We have had some new blood take the reins and start  hosting  rooms and keeping things hopping. Now with Modern Warfare 3 out, we're starting to get some good clan night games going.

I've been playing some Modern Warfare 3 but I can't say it's that good. I liked the single player campaign just to wrap up the story line from MW2, but the multiplayer is more like  MW2.5. I know Black Ops got some grief, but overall, I like it more than MW3. I also liked World @ War so maybe I just prefer Treyarch games to Infinity Ward.

I also have been playing Battlefield 3 and that is my go to game righ now. We have some guys in the Clan that also play BF3 and when we squad up, the game really rocks. Teamwork makes all the difference in that game.  We have a couple of guys that are death from above in a helicopter just raining hell down on the other team. That is so much better than spastic randoms who take the helo and promptly crash it.

I'm leaving hints with my wife that I might like Skyrim for Christmas, but when I say things such as, "I'd like Skyrim for Christmas" she just gives me the really? look and ignores me.

I get that a lot thouigh.

Red State

Wed, 10/19/2011 - 10:35 — Habu06

I like Kevin Smith movies. There I said it.  Mr. Smith reccently released a movie he wrote and directed called "Red State". The noteworthy thing is he chose to go direct distribution instead of getting a studio to get behind it, he got the funding himself , made the movie and distributed it through his own company. He made the movie for approximaltely 4 million dollars. He had the film in limited release with some Q&A afterward then went to on demand and DVD release. I had heard that this was not the typical Kevin Smith movie.

Well , last night, I happened to see it in a store and decided to go ahead and get it.   Saw it last night and it definitley isn't a Jay and Silent Bob movie.

Basically,  the story is about a group that is similar to Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church with a little Branch Davidian thrown in. Mr. Smith has one scene specifically put in to keep the Phelps from suing him which I'm sure they considered after seeing this. (Mr. Smith mentioned sometime ago in an interview some of them went to the premire but left before the film ended)

Michale Parks (you've sen him in some Tarrantino films) was excellent as the patriarch of the group. The last scene was especially good.

There is a point in the movie where you get a WTF???? but I won't spoil it here. You'll know when it occurs.

All in all a really good movie. I don't know if i would recommend buying it, but definately I recommend seeing  it.

EARTHQUAKE!!!!!!

Wed, 08/24/2011 - 08:13 — Habu06

First, Mr. Chinese Spamman, A heart felt  "Fuck You Asshole" and.... bump.

Second.

We had an earthquake in Virginia yesterday.  I know the west coasties are less than impressed, but it has been 140 years since the last major earthquake occured here so for us, it was an event. The local news stations were doing there best to gin up some drama with teasers such as, "are our nuclear power plants safe?"  (Yes) and reporting that emergency crews were doing damage assesments. (look Junior, some bricks fell off a chimney!!!)

I was driving to a meeting when the Great Quake of 2011 struck and don't recall feeling it. For all I know I may have thought it was just a piece of rough pavement.  When I got  to the meeting,  there were people  tapping and flicking  their smartphones like it was defcon 2. My wife called me asking if I was O.K and I think she was dissapointed when  I told her I didn't even know it had happened.

So, we survived. We will rebuild.  I'm trying to figure out how to get some Obamabucks out of this.

Clan LAN

Sat, 08/20/2011 - 09:50 — Habu06

Well, I noticed once again, four new blog posts for some Chinese knock off crap you probably don't want or need so I thought, "Why not bump them one with an update from the black sheep clan  (if you're a black sheep, relax, it's just a saying)

Last week was the Porchop Platoon LAN which was held in the cultural center of the not quite mid west, Cincinatti.  In the spirit of disclosure, I did not go. Now,  I wanted to go and had made plans to go, but my wife and her sister decided that weekend would be perfect for a family get together before our offspring head out to their various colleges. Herein lies a major difference between her and me. She comes from a large, close, interconnected family and I don't.  So, in order to maintian matrimonial civility and because, " I want to go away for a few days, hang out in a hotel and drink way too much while playing  video games with guys I know online" didn't seem to impress her enough to cancel having a dozen people come over for the weekend.

But even though I didn't go, I was able to keep up a little bit by checking in with the updates on the forums when there was some downtime. (yay smart phone) From all reports, it was a huge sucess. The highlight was a paticular clan member being able to fly over from the Emerald Isle to attend.

There were lots of photos taken, but since I didn't take them, I don't feel comfortable posting the link here. If anyone really would like to see them,  do a little detective work on Flikr and Photobucket  and you should be able to find the links (hint: Porchop Platoon, LAN)

Thats it for now. Don't buy cheap crap off blog posts. If you do, the terrorists win.

Well, its been a while since I stunk up the blog zone with my prattle, but that doesn't mean I don't check out others blog posts daily  to see what is transpiring in  the 2old2play multiverse. Today  I see the infamous multiple  "no pic" icons in the top seven blog posts. Yet again, another spamshit has slithered up out of the muck of the interswamp to hawk knock off purses, shoes or other assorted sweatshop tripe clevelrly hidden amongst rambling blocks of text copy pasted from other sources.  So I ask this; does anyone actually buy this stuff when it's posted here?

I don't know if its possible, but maybe when a person signs up to this site, they have a probationary period before they can post a blog or maybe, their first couple of blog posts are reviewed by a moderator (not edited, just reviewed) to see if they are an actual blog post or spam before they are allowed to go through. Or, the person has to provide a working email address so everyone can send them jpegs of gaping assholes -just a thought.

What else?  Nothing much. Dance of Dragons came out this week and I'm reading that right now.  If anyone is a Game of Thrones fan and hasn't picked up the book yet, I won't spoil it for you, but I will say it's not a direct sequel to book four, A Feast of Crows. Geroge Martin describes it as a continuation of Crows with the focus on those characters and story lines not addressed in Crows. He mentions that his next book will bring Feast of Crows and Dance of Dragons together. I hope it doesn't take him five years to write the next one. If your only exposure to Game of Thrones was the HBO series, the books are worth checking out  - if you like to read. They are a bit lengthy.

Gaming. Still playing Black Ops and trying to slog through the whole prestige thing. I haven't done it before and I'm not sure if I will reach the top prestige before MW3 comes out and BLOPs gets kicked to the curb.  There are several people in the clan who have reached level 50 - 15th presige but I just don't have the spare time or patience to sit there hour after hour playing online. I'm also becoming more annoyed with the online players I run into when playing public matches. It would be refreshing to hear something other than negative trash talk or the same tired insults.  I do enjoy getting together with fellow clan memebers and playing as a team though. It makes all the difference and more times than not, we come out on top.

I picked up Borderlands GOTY edition and I know, I'm late to the party.  I wish I had picked this up when it first came out. I really llike the game and the add ons. I just finished the Claptrap robolution add on and now I'm trying to collect oil cans and pizzas for the achievement. I also need to level up a little bit more before I go back and try to kill crawermax. Right now, he's killing me almost as soon as I step off the platform.

Well, thats it for now.
