Reality vs. Fantasy

So someone brought up how they refused to play a game (after playing the first 4 in the series) because of who it portrays the role of women in it. Also it was said that if you purchase this game you support these depictions against women.  Here is the exact wording."So your say its okay to have a game where you can have sex with women and beat them to death, it's fine to run over innocent people with a car? And you have no problem with it, because you don't engage in it and because it's a fanatasy or satire? I don't respect that. You buy, you condone". Really? I beg to differ.

In CoD:MW2 you chose to either shoot innocents in an airport as an act of terrorism or skip the scene. In HALO you kill aliens and it's non stop violence. In FMS I race at high speeds and crash... a lot. In playing these games am I or we condoning terrorism, killing or crashing and driving unsafe or am I just enjoying a game?

If someone chooses not to agree with something in game I can respect that, but don't stick your nose up at the rest of us because you had some epiphony after you played 4 installments of the game. Maybe we just haven't reached your level of clarity yet.

There is no question in my mind that there are some disturbed people that have a problem seperating fantasy from reality but for the normal user I'm pretty sure we all know how to seperate reality from fantasy. I'm not condoning any of this or these acts that are depicted in any of the games I play. I'm actually more offended by this persons judgement of the people that play the game than anything I've yet to experience in a game. I bought it so I condone it...this couldn't be further from the truth.

Has anything you've ever done in a game influenced the choice you've made in a real life situation? Or made you act in a certain way? I'm gonna venture to guess that 95% of us will say no.

Bravo! 173

One thing I've learned though, especially around here...if you're talking sense no one will listen, especially the person making none.

Well, there was that one time I sang Bon Jovi in Rock Band & later decided to take it to the karaoke stage.  12

But seriously, gaming is an escape from reality - a time & place to do the things we won't do in person. Our activity in a game does NOT carry over to real life. My "12 under par" in Tiger Woods does not enhance my skills on a real course. Forza doesn't make me a capable driver. Forget that dude, he's just talking out of his ass.

When I play too much Battefield I hide behind bushes when I see birds because my brain thinks they are MAVs spotting me.

What I thought to be a plasmid really turned out to be sugar water... it happens.

My line of thought has nothing to do with how I think a game might make someone act.

I too play games to get away from  some aspects of reality, and some of the acts "possible" in GTA I find distasteful AND are some of the reality I seek to avoid. Don't put me in the preachy categorie of judging you by how you play or what, just that I choose not to. It's that simple. Clearly I'm in the minority, and honestly, on that aspect, I don't care. It's a decision for me about me.

It is a shame as the scope of the game is huge. It's a shame other games couldn't approach this kind of size, Horizon for example was expected to be like this and was a huge disappointment.
