Part 1

First let me get into the sound solution. As you may or may not know I got a set to Tritton Ax360 gaming headsets (thanks Stri and Mid for the recommendation!!!) for xmas and a Hd DvD player for the 360. So I was totally excited about these. Could not wait to hook them up.

And so I did.

First I hooked up the head sets. Very easy to do. I even think Drost could figure out how to hook them up without hurting himself. So I pull out the optical cable from the 360 that goes to my receiver, plug in in the optical cable that goes to the decoder for the headset and Hot Damn they are working freaking great!!! Had to do a little adjustment in the menu's of the 360 and on H2 to get the mic to work, but no biggy..

So now I hook up the Hd DvD..Not really that tough, just followed the directions plugged in the power cord, plugged in the usb cord, installed the software, and wham all done. I had already seen King Kong and did not want to watch it all over so I put in End of Days and pushed play...Up comes the video, looks great, but Houston we have a problem. No sound..

So I am like WTF, I check to make sure my receiver is on the correct input...blah, blah, blah, still no sound. Then it hits me. Hey dumbass you still have the headphones hooked up..Oh yeah...Then it really hits me. Oh crap, so you are telling me I have to switch out my optical cord every time I switch from gaming to wanting to watch a DVD..Damn it!!! So I did this for like a week and a half, each time switching out the cable for the funciton I needed, and each time cursing at myself thinking I would be so smart, now Teri (my wife) does not have to ask me to turn down the sound while I a playing xbox (one of the reasons I wanted the headphones)...blah, blah, blah..yeah real smart dumbass. So now I went on the hunt to make my new peripheral hotness to work together.

I needed to find.....AN OPTICAL SPLITTER!!! So I went to an electronics shop, thinking hell one of these guys will now where or if an optical splitter exists..And no I did not just go to a Best Buy or Circuit city..I went to an Electronics shop...You know the one's, you walk in and there is nothing but wires, and circuit boards, a flux capisiters laying around...Surely these electronic geeks could point me in the right direction.

Uh no..the guy behind the counter was obviously dropped on his head several times as a child, when I told him about my problem, he looked at me like a deer and headlights and said, why don't you just get a normal splitter and use the red and white cables. I told him I wanted to use the optical because I wanted the surround sound feature that you get using the optical cable. He then said, "You mean you can't get that with the red and white rca connection". I then said no, and walked out before this guy's head was going to explode from the new info.

So I went to the next best option and went searching on the Internet and this is what I found:

Just over 6 bucks and 6 buck for shipping..Oh well not that bad of a price and looks like what I need.

So it arrives yesterday, I pull it out of the packaging, install it, and boo ya!! I am getting sound out of my ax360's and my receiver. All is well back in ManLand!!

Now my little modding project is going to be replacing my current 360 controller shells with translucent colored shells. I will do another post about that after lunch.

Hello again. Found this one on Amazon.com! Slightly more expensive than the one I have! This is similar to what I have, and works well if you have the 360 hooked up, as well as any Satelite/ Digital Cable hook up! http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Optical-Toslink-Selector-Connections/dp/B0...

Mas...I found it on amazon. Just do a search for optical spliter. Peep, thanks for the recommendation. I found that one to, but I did not want a selector, just a splitter. To many options for the wife to have to figure out how to use the dvd is not a good thing..At least with my wife..

"At least with my wife.." :D Feel ya! I just bought the headphones at lunch at Fry's in Industry- paid $30 more, but I've got them for tonight! :) You seem to be bad for my impulse buying!

Thanks for the tip and link! I need to get one of these so the mac mini and 360 can share the remaining fiber connection.

What site did you pull it from? That's a handy little widget.

YO! Hey , I went to RadioShack of all places about two years ago, and found a 4-way Optical input splitter! It has a dial on the top (kinda looks like an old wind up kitchen timer) to select which of the 4 inputs I want to use, numbered 1-4! Totally rocks, and, only cost 24.99! Hope this helps!
