Season's victims: It's starting...

Today I got a phonecall from a mutual friend to buddy I have been in Former-Yugoslavia with. We lost sight of eachother over the years as I tend not keep in touch with the past (if that makes sense, to the vets on here I guess it makes perfect sense anyway), and he recently tried to take his own life. He was found in time and is now recovering in an institution till he's well enough to transfer to the Military Hospital in Utrecht where he can get help tailored to his specific needs.

Early indications suggest that neglected battle-fatigue, lonelyness and the inability to hold a steady job were amongst the reasons that drove him over the edge. I was able to get him on the phone, he sounded like he was put through a meat grinder, but his fighting spirit was returning to him.

So, if you have a vet in your family, or know one in your street or neighborhood, take some time and show them you care about them. More than the rest of the year, the holliday-season is the hardest on those who fought, or are still fighting, for your liberties. You don't have to kiss our feet, or worship the ground we walk on, but you do have a duty to at the very least keep an eye on the vets you know about, either passingly so, or as friends to you or in your family.

For whome the bell tolled 2008:

1) Alex van Veen. Sergeant 1rst class. Medals for valor and peforming above and beyond, two campaign medals, one medal awarded by her Royal Highness Queen Beatrix (called a "Lintje", traditionally awarded to citizens who are deserving on the 30th of April each year). Survived and is receiving care and treatment as we speak.

Don't let the list grow, it's in your hands!

Should you come to hear of other tragedies befalling vets this season, let me know so the list can be updated and serve as a guide for those who whish to help with prayer from whichever religion.

To the vets on here, I might not have fought by your side, but I've seen my share of the shit. Drop me a line if you feel like taking a load off to a guy who understands the things that are left unsaid. You guys know I'm here throughout the year, but in this time of the year, it doesn't hurt to remind you again.

Legend versus Underworld.

Or, which Lara provides the most game for pricing vs satisfaction? If you didn't buy a Tomb Raider before on the 360 and are interested in finding out which one of the two to invest your gaming-dollar in, in this article I will put the two games next to eachother and look into the differences between them. Lara-savvy readers here will notice that I've left "Anniversary" out of the mix, but I did that for a good reason. The reason isn't so much the fact that "Anniversary" is a 'one for the fans' release, but for quite another one that'll make sense further into the article.

[Above: Lara as she appears in "Legend".]

Ever since the series took the gaming-community by storm by revolutionizing the platform-based exploring genre, there has always been a discrepancy between the actual game and it's lead. The puissantly wealthy, unrealistically nimble and supermodelistically beautiful young woman known as Lara Croft, has risen above being a game-persona and took on a life on her own outside the computer-game series, having her own comic-book series, two feature-films and in the past even a clothing-line, action figures, statuettes and other knick-knacks like key-rings and wallets. To many, a new Tomb Raider game is about Lara Croft and the game itself is of less importance. In the thirteen years since the first groundbreaking game, there has been several episodes that fell victim to being about Lara Croft over being about the game and it's related enjoyability to the gamer, with the absolute low point being "Chronicles". A title that not only signalled ultima ratio for the series as a whole, but was also meant to end the craze that was going on at the time.

Not counting "Angel of Darkness", which was a final good-bye and a fan-pleaser if anything, "Legend" saw the rebirth of the franchise and returned Lara Croft on the gaming center-stage. When looking at the games-landscape for the 360 only, "Legend" was a welcome game between the FPS' and the racers and provided some much needed fresh air. But the game on the 360 suffered from that culture and as a result did not do as well as it by rights should've done. Some of that also was due to the fact that it was "Tomb Raider". A gamer knows what to expect when buying an episode...

"Legend", though handicapped by being a rather short game and having puzzles that were a thad too easy to solve, is a solid game. The levels in "Legend" are diverse, taking the player from Bolivia to Kazahkstan, stopping over in Peru and Japan along the way. Each level has it's own pitfalls and unique settings and each of the levels tells it's own contained story linking all the levels into one coherent story-arc. Graphically "Legend" stands out in level-design where it comes to attention to detail. It's eye-candy all around. Lay-out-wise, "Legend" is strikingly linear as the player is being lead from the beginning of a level to the end of it without being allowed to wonder off somewhere. A story is being told and the player is going to follow that story even if it kills him/her.

"Legend" portrays Lara as a female James Bond and the game establishes this in the opening FMV with catchy music and silhouettes running and tumbling allover the screen against a backdrop of firefights and high-speed persuits. Lara went high-tec, having an electro-magnetic crapple-hook, a state of the art PDA and a computer driven pair of binoculars called RAD. The RAD is an important tool on fist play-through as it points out things that are of importance which helps to solve puzzles. However, the player must enable this by a button-press otherwise the binoculars are just binoculars. She wears an ear-piece that's also a small camera. It's linked to a sattelite which relays everything she sees or does back to her research-team in the UK and throughout the game Lara engages in light-hearted banter with her team.

The RAD and the PDA are however the only help Lara gets in finding out what to do or how to do it, but with some smart combining of the information gathered by using those tools, all problems can easily be solved on fist play-through. Every level has a finale, be it either a royal rumble of one against many, or straight up boss-fights. The straight-up boss-fights are engaging as some bosses need to be dispatched by being smart and using the environment instead of fighting the level-boss directly.

Controlling Lara is easy, and once the different controls are learned, mastering them by combining actions becomes second nature after a while which translates to some very thrilling action-scenes on-screen. But Lara is somewhat of a clutz and jumping a few pixels too early can sometimes result in a failure and there are certainly enough times when the camera decides to view the action from an angle that might be interesting for the Lara watcher, but not so helpful for the situation.

"Legend" gets it's replayability from speed-run challenges and finding treasure the player didn't find on first play-through. Achievements come from general play, the player doesn't need to do feats of nimbleness or other outrageous things that have no bearing on the game itself. Going for the 1000/1000 will force the player to explore everything the game has to offer nevertheless. Once the player has unlocked the extras like alternative outfits and concept-art and found all the treasures, there isn't much to "Legend" that will motivate the player to play for play's sake, even though it's fun to see if you can still beat a speed-run record you've set a few months ago, for instance.

Current DLC for "Legend" are two 800MSP downloads of the "Anniversary" levels, giving the player a complete new game within the "Legend" framework. The DLC-levels are decidedly more complicated and difficult than the "Legend" levels and for many problems having a working understanding of laws of nature and some interest in history and myths is tremendously heldpful.

[Above: Lara as she appears in "Underworld".]

The latest episode in the series called "Underworld" is not really a logical step forward. Crystal Dynamics has tried to update Lara's arsenal of gymnastics and made her follow some clinics given by Chuck Norris. Lara can now jump-kick her way up between two walls and walk tightrope and for the first time ever in the franchise can now engage in melee-combat performing curb-stomps, flying kicks and roundhouse kicks. Combat has been updated with a new feature called "Adrenaline Shot", but the player can easily do without it as at any difficulty combat is still not the focus of Tomb Raider.

"Underworld" is certainly the most beautiful installment in the series. The amount of attention to detail and the workmanship that has been invested to it litterally oozes from the screen.

Lara has lost her high-tec interest a bit and she forfeits the sattelite-uplink this time, which sadly does away with the friendly banter that made "Legend" incredidably funny at points.

The puzzles to be solved are good brainteasers, but the game does everything in it's power to make sure the player doesn't get stuck with a hint-system that downright spoils the gameplay in that respect. Instead of gently nudging the player into adding 1+1 together, the hintsystem is not above handing the player the solution in easy to follow steps. For instance a hint like "I must pick up "X", bring it to "Y" and do "Z"" is not an exception. Of course, the player isn't forced to use the system but a more oblique hint-system might have been more of a wiser choice. In "Anniversary" for instance, a hint said "That looks like gold" and for the problem I was solving at the time and in the context of the situation Lara was in at the time, the hint litterally made me slap my forehead...

Gameplay wise it seems a bit weird that this is Crystal Dynamic's third effort in the franchise. Controlling Lara is infuriatingly difficult because of the broken camera-system, which makes easy stuff extremely challenging as the outcome of any jump, leap or grab is totally dependant on the roving camera. This also destroys the possibility of making jump-combos as it's wise to wait between jumps for the camera to settle down...

"Underworld" has no boss-battles whatsoever anywhere. What encounters there are with bosses are handled with FMV's. Crystal Dynamic's excuse for it was that this time they wanted the player to experience the new abillities of Lara as he/she uses these new abilities to solve problems in new ways not before found in the franchise. Sure, but one has to wonder why they decided to do this with "Underworld"'s broken camera-system and the "player-is-a-moron" help-system... (even though Lara's voice is pleasant)

The replayability of "Underworld" is virtually none. There are no speedrun-challenges and the player can revisit old stages to find the last treasures, but he/she does so in a stage that's exactly how the player left it... devoid of enemies and all the problems solved. The unlockables are what the player might have come to expect from the franchise... the outfits unlocked are only usable in the "Treasure-hunt" mode. However, once the player has gone through the game once, and finding out that some left over achievements require the player to start a new game to get, forfeiting items unlocked prior, he/she will wonder if there's any point to it, especially seeing as the camera-system does not invite subsequent play-throughs for the joy of playing a new chapter in the franchise alone.

For DLC, there are two new levels in the making that will advance the story-arc towards the next full Tomb Raider game. I reckon that these new levels will only appeal to those of us that follow Lara's story, and will add no extra incentive for the casual player to put his MSP's to extra Tomb Raider content.

In conclusion, if you're interested in picking up a Tomb Raider title for the 360 if you have not done so before, pick up "Legend". Not only is "Legend" more fun to play, it's also funnier, more exciting and easier to control. "Legend" should by now be very cheap to obtain from used-game bins or E-bay and if the player should splash out 1600MSP to get the "Anniversary" DLC to go with it then the player gets two awesome games that both have ample replayability to boot for a price-total that might even be lower than what has to be payed for "Underworld" right now.

Tomb Raider: Underworld

Developer: Crystal Dynamics, featuring Blizz Software.

Publisher: Eidos

2008, singleplayer. Highest HD-res 1080p. Dolby Digital. Future DLC; extra lvls and outfits. Underworld is rated 16+, violence.

Ever since Crystal Dynamics resurrected the Tomb Raider franchise after Core with a sigh of relief dropped "Angel of Darkness" on the fans to never bother with Lara Croft again, the franchise is alive like never before. Crystal Dynamic's first effort, "Legend", was a learning experience for them, as they themselves stressed, and to many fans "Legend" was rather bland. The puzzles were not really taxing, the levels generally short and the gunplay uninspired. But Lara was back.

After "Legend", Crystal Dynamics released "Anniversary". A celebration of 11 years of Lara Croft, it was a remake of the very first adventure Lara ever had. "Anniversary" also was a showcase for many ideas Crystal Dynamics had in areas like context-animations and a new battlesystem that reminds a lot of gimmicks like "Bullet-time" or "Tequila-time". Anniversary was however plagued by the fact that the levels expanded on the original levels, making the messy lay-out a little more oblique than they themselves might have aniticipated. Crystal Dynamic's colaberation with the original Core-team that worked on the first Tomb Raider was most noticable in the puzzle-design, "Anniversary" was decidedly more difficult than "Legend" and by all accounts a superior game.

With "Underworld", The story picks up where "Legend" ended. Still searching for her mother and a way to avenge her father's death, Lara sets out to confront her demons and her enemies once and for all.

Graphically, "Underworld" is stunning. Levels like Thailand and Mexico are setting a new standard for exploration games. Since the player isn't on a timer, taking one's time with those levels is heartily recommended. The attention to detail in the environment is absolutely a high point in the franchise. Lara herself seems to have distributed her weight more evenly too, she has gained some meat on her bones by trading in a few sizes on her northerns. She maintained her athletic look however, but her more earthly dimensions aren't so distracting anymore. Still, Lara ends up in enough compromising positions to keep the interest...

Audio-wise, "Underworld" relies on a very limited soundtrack and environmental noise. In the jungle you hear birds and screaming animals... and Lara's screams of horror as she plummets to yet another date with the grimm reaper. Audio specific "Underworld" will not be remembered for very long.

The problems presented are tough, but helped by a new feature called "What would Lara do?", all are solvable without resorting to guides or the internet. First of all, there isn't a right way to solve many problems, the route through a level is up to the player. Unlike earlier episodes, it's impossible for the player to paint himself into a corner. Then, the backbone of the "What would Lara do?"-system is the PDA, which Lara uses to talk to the player. This provides two levels of clues, the first level is a vague advise on what could be done and the second level is Lara being captain obvious. The player is advised to be very cautious with the PDA, as it might take away from the game-experience. Not only does Lara herself provide spoilers in the hint-department, the PDA logs journal-entries ahead of time which can give away what lies ahead.

The battle-system saw yet another innovation. Crystal-Dynamics calls it "Adrenaline". It's more like "Lara-time". As long as the player damages an enemy, a gauge fills. When that gauge is topped off, pressing "X" enters "Lara-time" and the action goes slowmotion. Two circles are shown on screen, a gray one and a red one.As the slowmotion runs it course, the player must move the red circle in the gray one and press the trigger once that is accomplished. A successful match results in Lara outright killing her enemy with a satisfying headshot, though the kill-cam isn't as advanced as in "Fallout 3", for instance. Often times, the camera pans away from the action, moving the circles off-screen... which results in a wasted "Lara-time"...

Another feature that got expanded upon was the in "Anniversary" still infant context-animations for Lara. Context-animations are little animations that give the illusion that Lara really is in the environment, interacting with it without the input from the player. She'll hop over low obstacles, brush foilage aside, protect herself when the player is about to steer her headlong into a wall and other little animations like staggering at the edge of a rock. When Lara is left to her own devices she'll cross her arms, put her hands on her hips, do little stretch-excersises, groom herself or adjust her utility-belt. When it works as intended it's awesome, but the animations have a flaw... they all rely on where Lara finds herself at any given moment. When it's obvious what the player wants Lara to do, like jumping to a ledge that even a blind man can see, then all is fine. But when Lara stands in a cramped spot, and ahead of her is a pole and a ladder, and at her feet is a ledge while to the left is a small obstacle, then any number of things can happen... the worst of which is Lara entering a context-animation, realising she's supposed to jump, more or less jumps, tries to reach for the ledge and then falls down, oftenly to her death. And all the player wanted Lara to do is to jump to the ladder right in front of her... Hmmmm... Still, timing certain jumps differently on the next try takes a lot of fustration away.

The real enemy of the player in "Underworld" is the camera however. It has a mind of it's own and doesn't take kindly to being manipulated in such the way the player may have some benefit from it. In most cases the camera is responsible for a lot of "leaps of fate", an ailment known from old-school side-scrolling platformers. Most failed jumps are all due to the camera aswell, since directional input is relative to where the camera is looking. This means that your input is only good as long as the camera remains in place, but moving Lara might force the camera to shift position, making directional input obsolete the moment the player presses the "A" and is forced to witnessing Lara spectacularly miss a laid up jump and once again fall to her doom... In effect, the unruly camera ads a hit-or-miss element to the gameplay that becomes infuriating after a while. Can the context-animations be kept in check by setting Lara up with a bit of attention, the camara which dictates to a point the direction in which Lara travels can't be trusted upon. "Underworld"'s camera, and the way it fights the player, is an absolute low-point in the franchise and was last seen in launchtitles for the 180.

"Underworld" is not a bad game. It's an awesome brainteaser and Lara goes on a grand adventure that's worth experiencing. Lara herself, apart from her more girl-next-door dimensions, has moved away from the Angelina Jolie stigma by being less gung-ho, more easily angered and remarkably more emotional. Lara is no longer "perfect", she has become an individual with a good and a bad side and as a result she has become a more believable lead. One which the player will want to see more of in the future.

Tomb Raider: Underworld does not rise above the 7/10. For that the audio is too functional, almost workman-like and the camera handicaps play far too much for the game to be truly amazing. "Underworld" is not for the easily angered, be aware!

because Durty recommends it:

1) Favorite object in your bedroom?
Don't have a bedroom, since I live in a boardinghouse and the city is being anal about renting out houses to singlepeople who don't live on the streets.

2) Ever did heroin?
Yes, but like all substances that alter my brain, I don't care much for the aftermath of using drugs and alcohol and rather stay sober.

3) Do you own guns?
I'm done with things that go boom.

4) What flavor do you add to your drink at sonic?
Dunno what sonic is, but my favorite soft-drink is a Coke...

5) Do you get nervous before doctors appointments?
Yes, because I suck about explaining what ails me. I'm also handicapped with an extremely high pain-tolerance, so even when I do crumble and see a doctor I leave the impression that whatever ails me is a waste of the doctor's time.

6) What do you think of hot dogs?
They're good, but I regret it afterwards; the aftertaste is greasy as heck and stays in my mouth for a day.

7) Favorite song?
"Like a pill" by Pink.

8 ) What do you prefer to drink in the morning?
Coffee, lots and  lots of coffee. Black, no sugar and stronger than Hulk Hogan.

9) Can you do push ups?
Used to, but I never maintained that skill after leaving the service.

10) Can you do a chin up?
No...

11) What's your Favorite Restaurant?
Any asian restaurant will do, but since smoking in places like that is now banned by law, I rather take-out and eat their stuff in the comfort of my home.

12) Do you like blue cheese?
No.

13) Ever been in a car wreck?
About six times. Driving around in warzones comes with a 500% increase in roadhazards.

15) What's one trait that you hate about yourself?
Being an empath. It severely hampers the ability to tolerate other people in my surroundings. Some people give me physical discomfort by just being near me. It's not their fault though.

16) Middle name?
Emile Jacobus

17) Name 3 thoughts at this exact moment?
1] Where did I leave my 360-controller yesterday?

Coke and Coffee -- the two pillars of life.

20) Current worry?
Having to take yet another action to get the state to fork over my non-day backpay. Bureaucracy for the lose.

21) Current hate right now?
Not being allowed to take care of a little kitten by the boardinghouse-association.

22) What are you craving right now?
A little, furry kitten. I'm a cat-person and I had the chance to adopt the cutest kitten in the world. I mean, a real love at first sight kitten... Immeately knew what name she was going to have and everything. (Nozomi)

23) How did you bring in the New Year?
I watched the fireworks in Stormwind with the guild, and then went on to raid Magister's. I'm going to miss new year's eve in the Southern Kingdoms this year, even though I kicked the habit.

24) Where would you like to be right now?
Where I am right now will have to do, it's the end-result of choices in the past.

25) Name three people who will complete this?
No clue...

26) Do you own slippers?
No

27) What shirt are you wearing?
A basic T with no print.

28 ) Do you like sleeping on satin sheets?
No... too slippery for my taste.

Shish-kebob from the Helal food-service.

31) Would you be a pirate?

Never gave it much thought.

35) What's in your pocket?
A wallet.

36) Last thing that made you laugh?
The millionth leap of fate performed by Lara in Underworld... She salto'd, missed the ledge and fell down screaming... then realising that death was eminent, she just kinda fell out of sight in a dark pit...

37) Best bed sheets as a child?
Gotta be my Felix the Cat sheets. I loved Felix as a kid, even put up with that asshole companion Vavoom.

38 ) Worst injury you've ever had?
Two broken legs, dislodged spine-dishes, heavy concussion and shrapnell wounds... Landmines are the shit.

39) Do you love where you live?
No, I want a place with some privacy where I can live out my days being a crazy cat person.

40) How many TVs do you have in your house?
One, I use it as a PC-360-PS3 monitor though.

41) Describe your Dad/Step-Dad in 5 words or less;
Dad is okay, as far as asian crackpots go. Step-dad was a cool guy but we all underestimated the mental blow he got when his wife died, he committed suicide 2 months later.

42) Describe your Mom/Step-Mom in 5 words or less:
Mom never had much confidence in me and left no chance unused to remind me that I was a worthless waste of time and a drain on family resources. (I wasn't planned). Step-mom I didn't care for. My mother had cured me of being cordial to mothers in general.

43) Does someone have a crush on you?
Who knows, my emphaty usually unsures I'm far gone by the time a girl can 'fess up to the fact.

44) Do you have/want kids?
No, and no, at least not anymore.

45) What is your favorite movie?

77) Can you count past 100?
Yes.

78 ) Do you care what people think of you?
No. I gave up caring about that. I can't be everything to everybody without losing sight of myself.

Smart yes. Wise is open to discussion.

80) Have you ever touched an elephant?
