Xbox Live Crash?

by UnwashedMass| Published: Wednesday, December 27 @ 20:18:25 EST
Xbox Live has gone down across all games as of 7:00pm Central Time 12/27/06. So far there is no explanation for the crash.

Players are reporting that they cannot get into online games, and some are even stating that single player games are not functioning. However, you can still download from Marketplace, send messages and take part in private chat.

After a cursory troll of the Xbox Live forums, there seems to be no explanation at this time, although they do claim to be working on it.

Current Xbox Live Statement.

Update 1: It seems as though games that rely heavily on Xbox Live for single player (Gears of War) can still be played if you make sure to either unplug your network cable or completely sign out of Xbox Live. Multiplayer is still down as of 9:15pm Central Standard Time.

Update 2: We are getting word that a Telecommunications across Asia have been severely disrupted because of damage to undersea cables caused by Tuesday's earthquake near Taiwan. Many are speculating that this could be a part of the Xbox Lives downtime although there is nothing to confirm the speculation. In a quote from BBC News we learned that, "China's biggest telecoms provider, China Telecommunications Group, said that communications cables to the US and to Europe had been damaged." Seeing as how this happened on Tuesday we are doubtful that it has directly affected Xbox Live's service. Then again, you never know.

Update 3: After 30 minutes of waiting on hold with customer service, we were told that the outage would continue until tomorrow morning. At first the operator tried to tell us that the outage was due to a Xbox Live update. Obviously an update would be something that is announced and not sprung on 4 million users at the drop of a hat. Let's hope we can get some real answers soon.

Final Update: As of 1:07A.M. Xbox Live is now back online with all functions. There still has been no explanation from Microsoft as to why this crash occurred. Maybe tomorrow.

I guess that would explain why I can't get Gears of War to fire up a single player game tonight. It's very interesting that single player doesn't work if xbox live is having problems... must have something to do with the drop-in/drop-out co-op mode.

Oh well, I still have plenty of Psychonauts to play yet :)

Clearly this is a terrorist attack to XBL users. Most likely coming from Sony. They probably are responsable for the earthquake as well and the rising gas prices. Hell, they may have even made all of those birds crap on my truck.

In response we should have a mass retaliation. Pile all products made by Sony into a large pile, somewhere in New Jersey. Once the pile is large enough we burn the pile and then try to put it our by urinating on it.

That will clearly send a message and noone in Jersey will ever notice the difference so we are good there.

Let's roll.

I don't know if Jersey is such a good idea. I mean you put those sony products there and they will sink into the swamp that New Jersey is. And I know from experiance it is hard to catch anything on fire when it is wallowing below the scum level of the swamp. Plus you will probably have to listen to John Cougar's newest album while you are trying to get the bonfire started.

So I finally got the 360 for xmas and of course did not get a game for it. That was ok cause I could go on the marketplace and also had my trusty Halo 2 disc. So I picked up GOW for 39.99 at target yesterday at lunch and quickly go home after work and eat dinner. My leg was bouncing under the table as we ate dinner, then finally the wife goes, "You can go play it now." She goes off to watch her soaps and play Mystery Csse Files: Ravenhurst on the lap top. I grab the GOW box and proceed to rip the plastic off with my teeth. After 5 minutes of struggleing with the plastic superclued condom they put on it and remove the over-abundance of sticky box sealing tape I pop the disc out and slap it into the tray. Game goes in, system boots up. Get the obligitory rating may change during online game play. The the trouble starts. . . There is an update for this game, might as well grab that. System downloads the update and resets. Title screen comes up again, I want to get in a few minutes of campaign to get an understanding of the controls so I choose that and then choose the medium difficulty. Game starts to load and then. . .

NOTHING!

It just kept bouncing me back to level select. grrrr. At this time I notice how much louder the 360 is with the GOW disc running. I mean it sounds like a Boeing taking off. I take out GOW and boot up Halo. that is fine. I try my new Aristocrats (the dirty joke one) documentury and that one is fine as well. Spent the next few hours cleaning the disc and trying to get the game to work even went to Microsofts website. Had given up and told the wife I may have to go back to target and exchange the disc for a new one. Stupid me didn't check the site till 1:00am, and then run back into the family room unplugged the network cable and POOF gears loads up!

Man I need to check here first from now on.

Thanks for the heads up.

If you’re having some issues connecting to Xbox Live, or getting into a game (matchmaking) the operations team is aware of the issues and are working on it.

I just heard from the Ops team...and we are all set now. They are debriefing now...so I'll see if I can get anything out of e to share on my show this week.

So if you want an answer we will have to check out Major's podcast...bastards.

I'm not one to drink to excess very often, but as fate would have it I was drinking that night! I go into rumble training to see how I perform with my inhibitions off:

game 1: first place in a KOTH game on Lockout (no surprise since you don't have to kill people to win)
game 2: last place in a SWAT game on Ivory Tower (I couldn't get the drop on ANYBODY: 1 kill/17 deaths lol!)
game 3: some oddball game, I think I finished 4th or so

Then I vaguely remember seeing a "5 players needed" lobby screen a lot and re-booting my router at least once. I thought I was too drunk or impatient to wait for it to load properly and finally gave up. An entire Xbox Live outage though... that is priceless. I thought my insobriety was the cause of why I couldn't play online!
