Xbox 360 Slim - December Announcement?

by codemonkey| Published: Tuesday, September 30 @ 18:55:02 EDT

The word on the street (read:rumor) is the Microsoft is going to release an announcement on their 2009 hardware revision, Xbox 360 Slim. This announcement will explain, supposedly, what the slim will look like and when we can expect it.

Does any of this make sense? Do we have any Marketing folks in the audience?

Who the hell would announce a new hardware refresh during the holiday season? Microsoft has worked hard to cut prices and build hype about their console. They’ve spent a large amount of money on marketing and gaining continual momentum against the PlayStation 3 product (they’ve got no prayer against the Wii at this point). Would it be wise to tell consumers that the product they’re buying is going to be old and crusty within a few months of owning it?

We think this rumor might be a bit stretched; although Microsoft came out months ago denying the claims of a slimline system, we’re still undecided on the truth. What we do believe is that Microsoft would wait until momentum started to spin down before refreshing their product line. This would be similar to how Nintendo handles their DS redesigns, waiting until their is a slow in momentum before pushing their next revision.

No details have been mentioned on this fabled Slim yet, presumably it would be the standard Xbox 360 with a smaller form factor and potentially a bit quieter and cooler (looking and heat-wise).

Perhaps we’ll see a slim 360, but we probably won’t see the announcement this holiday.

Announcing a hardware upgrade/change prior to this Holiday season, but not releasing it for this Holiday season is absolutely insane. I could see them rolling this out next year at E3 for Holiday 2009 though. Where M$ is going to make their money on each console is by continually improving and refining (lowering cost of) the manufacturing process and reducing the cost of the hardware components. That is why they pulled the plug on the original Xbox; they could never break even on it and were selling each one at a loss.

Having a slimline-version of the 360 on the market does not nessecarily mean your hulk is outdated. If the picture is anything to go by (I take it, it's an artist-impression), then it sure looks like an innovation that should be welcomed because by just looking at it, MS seems to have found a way to compress all that power into a smaller package.

And so doing they had address a meryad of things that would desintegrate your old hulk only because you would play a game.

I even believe that a radical redesign of the outer and inner workings of the 360 is a nessecary step to secure the user-base that there is light on the horizon. And as such, it can't happen soon enough.

A smaller version of the case will only give the internal componets of the 360 a shorter heat up time. Lets just get the real problem fixed.

I'm calling bullshit.

The Jasper chip set is only just making its way onto retail shelves which is the 65nm GPU along with the CPU. That's what made the price cut doable for the holiday season.

The 'slim' is going to be a single chip with the three core CPU and the GPU all together one on piece of silicone. If they're only just getting Jasper out the door.... the new slim is late spring early summer release date at best.

Last is, why would they make an announcement like that and potentially stall hardware sales? That would slow down the retail channels making it take longer for the older stuff to clear out of the channels which microsoft does prior to the launch of a new sku. This new one would certainly have a major impact on being able to sell the old stuff.

So i just can't see an announcement coming this holiday because there's just no point. Now they may say something at CES 2009 though in late January... That's totally a possibility.

Where does the Hard Drive go??

The reason that OG Xbox was in the red was the cost of the HD. This is also the reason why they made it optional on the 360. (and took a big step backwards in my view).

The I know that the games generally don't need one, except for saves. But you can't even play an arcade game without one. The flash cards, don't have enough storage. And they have kept their storage device propiteray, (and the form of that thing is huge), so its not like you can hook up your PC HD through a USB or anything.
