Xbox 360 Drops 40% in Manufacturing Costs

by TANK| Published: Wednesday, November 22 @ 17:04:39 EST
Microsoft is now making a profit on 360's according to analysts iSuppli's most recent breakdown of the component costs.

When the Xbox 360 launched a year ago, it was believed that the components that make the box cost around $525 USD. That left Microsoft with a loss of USD $124 per system sold. In a year though, component prices have dropped and it looks like Microsoft could be saving as much as 40% on manufacturing costs. Currently it's estimated that the Xbox 360 costs $323 to manufacture leaving Microsoft with a profit of around $75 per system sold. It looks like Nintendo isn't the only one making money on console hardware anymore.

What could Microsoft do with that 40% drop in manufacturing costs? Perhaps the old 20 GB hard drive will be replaced with an 80 GB hard drive on the Premium system? Maybe they could change the logic board to include an HDMI port along with an HDMI cable. Or how about just a good old fashioned price drop? The Playstation 2 sold 3/4 of it's install base when the system hit USD $199.99, if Microsoft dropped the Core system to that price point they could see the same success. At that price the Core would even be cheaper than Wii!

MS sure did many things right this time, except for the 30 percent failure rates, but that is fixed now.

Hopefully there will be a price drop for all those people who can't afford the next gen systems yet.

This time around I am happy to hear they are turning a profit on the hardware, they deserve to! I feel they really went about the 360 a better way, actually making a product for the users, and listening to what we really wanted.

I didn't feel that way with the XBox, I always felt the 180 was a big beast that was slapped together so M$ could strong-arm some more crap onto us. (Of course I still ended up buying one, damn Halo) :)

Maybe they will dump an HD_DVD player in the 360 now and offer it at the existing price level. This would be a great time to hit the market with a lower price point or added feature. But I think MS is going to try to maximize profits during this next gen release by leaving the price up at least till after Xmas. (I hope I am wrong.)

so, to ensure the win this gen, should they drop the price or add an HD DVD player to it?

if people are willing to pay $600 for a ps3, i don't think a price drop will do much in the long run.

But are they really willing to pay that? (Score: 1)

The thing is, just because people are paying $600 for PS3 right now doesn't mean anybody will pay that in a few months when the PS3 supplies are more reasonable. Early adopters will pay all kinds of crazy prices.
