Wii to get News Feeds and Firefox

by TANK| Published: Thursday, January 25 @ 12:17:00 EST
Nintendo is looking to beef up it's web content on the Wii. Where others have failed to merge web and television, Nintendo thinks they can do it successfully. Perhaps they just need to provide compelling web content for use with the Wii to be successful.

Today, Nintendo announced two initiatives, first Mozilla Firefox web browser will be coming to the Wii to steal more market share as they've done on the PC/Mac. It will utilize the Wiimote motion and buttons to navigate web pages. It will feature a text entry system that boasts the ability to enter 50 words-per-minute.

Secondly, a partnership between Nintendo and the Associated Press to provide worldwide headlines to the Wii. Nintendo will build a custom web page for the Opera Browser (no word if the application will work with Firefox but there’s a good chance that it will.) Users will be presented with an interactive global map allowing you navigate using the Wii controller.

You will simply move over to the section of the world you’re interested in and zoom in to view headlines for that region. At launch, the content will be text and still images but Nintendo is hoping to expand to a full range of multimedia.

The news service is set to launch Saturday, Jan. 27th.

I think Nintendo is trying very hard to get their hands around internet connectivity, and making progress. If we get some good multiplayer games I believe the Wii can hold some very firm ground with awide array of gamers.

I wonder how this development will affect the details of the upcoming final release of the Opera browser.

I often tell people who ask me about the Wii that I would have purchased it even if it didn't play games. This sleek little device effortlessly integrates into your home network (wireless) and gives you Mac desktop like access to the web, weather and countless other upgrades to come. I've always wanted a WebTV like device without having to pay for a specific service and not have to use a keyboard (where's that going to go in my living room?). While the Wii will charge at some point, this is still a very inexpensive internet appliance that has total potential.

I have not had as positive a purchase experience since I purchased my iPod. Love the Wii!!!

I know we have discussed it in the DS forum that there are applications being developed for internet browsing on the DS and there is actually some video proof of this out there. Come on I need my DS to access the net so that I can now have this unit be my PDA as well.

I've seen the report about the news channel on CNN and Yahoo, but I hadn't seen anything about the Firefox browser. Do you have a link to that announcement?

Yes, that's the news channel. Maybe they're doing a selective early release?

I haven't had a chance to try it yet. I didn't notice the email light until I was leaving for work.
