Wii Opera Browser Now Available in US!

by doodirock| Published: Friday, December 22 @ 03:10:12 EST
Just hours after our news about Australian Wii owners being able to download, the Opera browser is now available in the US.

At around 2:30AM Central Standard Time, the Wii store began allowing United States residence to download the long awaited Opera browser. This came straight off the heals of our Aussie Report, the US Wii owners can now download the Opera browser Free of charge! Lets just hope this lasts.

New Screens:

The download process was fairly simple, and the browser can be found in the Wii Shop under the Wii Ware category. You will not need to update your system in order to see it.

Once the browser is downloaded, you are done! All we had to do was go back to the main Wii menu and the Internet Channel was already there. It clearly states that the browser was a Free Trail so I suspect this download has some sort of timed DRM on it.

Using the browser was fairly simple. Although typing out long addresses, even 2old2play's, was kind of a hassle. The other odd thing was our 16:9 Toshiba plasma caused huge black bars on each side of the browser (see screen shots), almost as if it was stuck in a black box. While its not to big of a problem, it does make the whole thing a little less professional looking.

Viewing a site is a snap. You can scroll by holding down the "B" button to grab the page, and move the Wii mote up or down. Actually reading the text may prove to be a little more difficult. If you have a Hi-Def screen, we HIGHLY suggest purchasing (if you can find them) the component cables. Without them, words just tend to mush together. Even with the handy Zoom feature (activated by pressing the "+" button) the words just don't look as good until you plug in the component cables.

Most of the other features are kept fairly sparse. There is a favorites tab for adding the sites you request. Given that you have to type everything in with the Wii Mote, this has proven to be invaluable. Other then that, you seem to be left with a low resolution browser that renders pages fairly well. Even YouTube and other flash pages worked great (check out YouTubes full screen options).

The real questions will be, is this browsers worth the money it will soon cost to download? So far we would have to say no. For anyone that already has a computer in the house, we found the navigation and poor resolution a little too impractical to stop us from simply getting off the couch and walking into the office. By the time you actually boot up the browser, you can most likely be sitting at your desk and surfing the web in full resolution glory. Still, its nice to see a browser within the Wii. To bad the Xbox doesn't have one yet for the 360. 1080i makes a lot more sense when browsing the web.

Without ever using the browser and not owning a Wii, to me this is where Ninetendo is blowing away MS right now. The ability to use your living room tv to surf the net is very, very cool. And from what I understand, the download will cost 500 Wii points, which is only like $5 bucks right? Hell, that's a lot better than horse armor!

But like I said, I haven't used it, haven't put my hands on a controller, haven't expereinced what Doodi did.

WebTV failed for a reason. Its just not fun to browse on your TV. Its to hard to actually see the web pages. anything under standard monitor resolution is just ridiculous.

You made a key statement here and it is where I believe your argument fails. You said "without ever using the browser AND not owning a Wii."

I own both the Wii and the 360. There is no way, in my opinion, that the Wii is better than the 360. Sure, it would be great to surf the web on the 360, but XBox Live is killing anything the Wii has to offer.

Anyone who has used Nintendo online services would probably say they are satisfied, but surely not blown away. In my opinion, the addition of internet browser is just another piece of what is right now just an average next generation system.

I still think console browsing is a waste of time and programming code. I mean most people, including myself have a computer that has access to the internet, have their computer within the same room as their console. Why should I go use a browser on a console that will (probably) cost money sometime soon, when I can get on my PC and use Fire Fox for free and be able to type stuff in 2x as fast?

I didn't get any good screenshots because I had to leave but it worked easily. However, I don't have component cables and I couldn't read the text in "non-zoomed" mode.

The browser worked on 2old2play, my own business site, and opera's homepage. I was able to do all the same things I could do in a normal opera browser (i.e. I wrote my own site to be compatible with Opera anyway so it was flawless).

This included:
1. Drop-down menu systems using web division tags
2. Flash for flash ads and such
3. All images looked like they should
4. Page colors, styles, and fonts were "like a PC"

The controller's vibration that occurs as you move over a hypertext link is awesome. You almost "feel" the webpage, similar to the Logitech iFeel mouse from five years ago (used Immersion rumble technology as well).

The biggest downfall, of course, was the keyboard...not having one. Second big downfall is not having a scroll wheel, although flying down using the "b" button and a down motion was almost as good as the wheel (probably just as good if I were used to it).

The resolution on the text without component cables, will be mashed together unless you zoom in. Unfortunately, once you zoom in, if you scroll the page it will zoom out again, then you have to zoom in to read the next block of text.

Is this a realistic feature? Well, if anything, it makes you "feel" like your on the Internet. At any point while gaming on your Wii you know you can jump online to search for something - its the environment that matters. Before the browser you really feel unconnected to the internet in many ways compared to XBL - unless you check the weather often.

In my case, my Wii is surrounded by four or five computers (yep, I'm a tech geek) so I have so many more means to using the Net from those then clicking through with my Wii. For a living room Wii installation and no computers in the area it might become a more valuable feature.

All in all, it is a component that Nintendo needs to provide its ready to be a network driven device. It pushes itself above the competition in feature set and the remote control is MUCH easier to use to navigate then a joystick. Just pretend your doing a powerpoint presentation and you've got the same mouse-like device.

The Trail is free until the browser comes out in late March. Then the full release will be free until late June. After that, then it will cost $5 for people who didn't download it during the window of time that it's free.

Seems it may be handy as a launching point to many popular sites out there. Best part it should be formatted to fit on your TV screen.

Definitely be checking this one out when I get home and download the browser!

I'm very surprised that Nintendo even has web browsing on the Wii (as well as the forecast and news channels). I seem to recall that Nintendo is adamant on making 'game' consoles, not media/entertainment units. Seems they have changed their tune, and for the most part, they are doing a pretty decent job at it.

Downloaded and played around for about 20 mins this morning. I enjoyed it, only had one minor issue, trying to access https for secure mail.

As for the keyboard, if the Wii popularity keeps up I'm certain that we'll see some additional peripherals, such as a keyboard that hooks in to the expansion slot on the 'mote.
