What Will It Take For You To Buy A PlayStation 3?

by codemonkey| Published: Friday, July 20 @ 14:14:27 EDT

It's easy to write a PlayStation 3 hate article, everyone on the Net has posted at least ten in the last six to eight months. But, what would it take for you to buy a PlayStation 3, for real?

The reasons for not buying a PlayStation 3 usually land into three categories (or maybe a few more):

  • I hate Sony
  • It's too expensive
  • No games of interest

For those that hate Sony with passion... you're lost to us. The other two concerns can be nailed in due time, right?

Looking at some of the titles for the holiday season we see games like Warhawk, Stranglehold, NASCAR 08 along with your typical sports games. Assassin's Creed is going to be a big title this holiday along with GTA IV.

True enough, many of these games are also coming out on the Xbox 360. What about Metal Gear Solid 4? We're assuming, as of now, this is a PlayStation 3 exclusive title coming in Spring '08.

Are there any games you won't be able to live without? Or games you would rather play on a PlayStation 3 than Xbox 360?

Speaking from our demographic here at 2old2play.com asking a gamer if they're ready to buy a PS3 usually incites an argument because we're so very Xbox 360-centric (based on past media coverage with OXM and Bungie.net).

But, really, what would it take you, a highly populated Xbox 360 community, to buy into the Sony experience?

Barring silly ads and bad press, it's all about the games and the machine, right? Perhaps, it's all about the price?

What price would you pay for the Sony PlayStation 3? Microsoft has said, with history backing them up, the mass market price is around USD $199.99. Not even Nintendo has hit this price point yet, but they're eating alive the competition in terms of unit sales.

Assuming the PlayStation 3 won't see USD $199.99 for some years to come, at what point would you consider a PS3 purchase? Would you spend $399.99 on the console today or wait for more games to arrive?

It seems each month gamers consider the console a little more, but we're not sure how many commit and put down the green for the unit. As fall, in North America, draws closer we'll see more titles arrive for every console. As the trailers are presented and the games arrive, the PS3 should be more tempting each quarter but when will hardcore gamers and casual gamers decide to invest in the product?

1. A better online community. Xbox live makes it fun to play mp - if PS3 had something that worked as well and my friends played on it, I'd probably get one.
2. A wider variety of games. Yes, you said that was one category, but it's true.
3. A price I can afford. I'd probably pay $299 for one, if the online community was better.

Truth be told, I like the graphics on the PS3, they look great - probably better than on my 360. But without that online community, the "live"-type experience, the PS3 is nothing more than a psp to me.

They need more games and better games that are for their console only to get people like me interested. I have owned all the consoles available everytime except this one and the price point didn't have a huge amount to do with it. it's just too expensive. i live in Australia and the packages for both have a gap of around AU$300-400, depending on what extras you get. yes, i know it's got Blu-Ray, but do you honestly think i can rent Blu-ray movies easily where i live? nope, i can't. besides, DVD is good enough for me.

i'd like to see how much the PS3 would actually cost if they took out Blu-Ray. drop the price, queue up MGS4, God of War III, and 3 other good exclusives, and then we'll talk.

There's not $599 worth of good games to play on the machine for one. And sure they get a jewel every once in a while like MGS4. But I was never a big MGS fan anyway so that's not really drawing me. They have nothing in their lineup this year that interests me that I'm not getting on the 360. And for those few jewels like MGS4, i can't justify an extra $200 over the cost of a 360 to play them. The overall cost per minute to game on the PS3 is way higher because it would hardly get used for the amount of money spent.

Then there's the whole online thing, it's just barely there. It's there enough for them to say they have it. I don't like that every game has it's own way of connecting up, the friends list integration is minimal and messaging integration is almost non existent. They need to put a lot of work into the online piece because it's just checkbox feature list right now against Live. it's not really completely integrated or consistent across games.

Anyway the bottlom line is the system still costs too much for what it offers when it's stacked up against the competition.

And as far as I can tell, the only big difference between and Xbox 360 and a PS3 is that someday the PS3 might have super stellar graphics that rivals the Xbox 360. But that's a big IF and is probably a few years down the road. I don't really need or want two systems that provide the same experience. 1. A more solid online component. There's no excuse for the fact that Sony is still playing "catch up" with the XBL service that has existed since November of 2002. It is absolutely appalling that Sony did not develop a robust online component in tandem with the actual PS3 console.

2. More exclusivity. Every time Sony loses an exclusive publisher, my desire to purchase a PS3 drops. MGS4 and FF13 just don't do it for me, sorry. I grew tired of the MGS series after 2 and who cares about Final Fantasy when the bulk of the original staff who made the series great are now known as Mistwalker Studios and are developing for the X360?

The reason I wanted a PS1 and PS2 were because they had exclusive games I absolutely had to play. Not anymore. Almost all of the games which drove me to buy a PS1 or PS2 have branched out to all of the available platforms, and I really believe, barring a major sales spike, MGS4 will also end up being a timed exclusive only.

I didn't buy a PS2 to play Jak, or Ratchet & Clank, even though they were fun games, they're not exactly titles which push console sales. GT3-GT4 is probably the only first party SCE title which pushed sales of the console, but even that's become stale.

3. Price drop. 499 is too much. I don't care if it has Blu-ray. I'm not buying the console to watch Blu-ray movies. I'm buying a gaming console to game. I don't care if the console can do everything but make toast, that's not why I'm interested in it.

Give me a substantial price drop, better online (no, @home, the Sims Online wannabe doesn't count), less corporate rhetoric, and show me some reasons why I should pick up the console (meaning games I couldn't play elsewhere) and I'd buy it.

Frankly, I don't think any of those requirements will ever be met.

My PS2 had some type of early production issue with the laser and therefore it wouldn't play games like The Matrix Path of Neo so I tried to sell it to a game shop and they wouldn't even take it because it was a launch day system. I just trashed it and started buying XBOX games.

I can't help but think that this is how Sony won the last console war by so much. They figured out that people most likely are just going to buy a new one because they had all the exclusives and you already had 15-20 games collecting dust because your last PS2 dies after a year.

Price drop and better exclusive titles or some new functionality beyond playing blu-ray movies (don't much care) and games (I'm thinking of IPTV type thing but that's a bad example since the xbox has that coming) I'm not blowing $500 on a machine which offers few games I can't already play on my 360.

When the next-gen match-up started I placed my $$ on M$ based on 3 main factors:

A) They have a TON of money to outspend Sony - something we're seeing w/ M$'s aggressive efforts to lock down exclusives or open up former Sonly only exclusives to their customer base.

B)Software - I had a feeling the differences between the next gen consoles hardware-wise would be negligible - that the 2 platforms would perform pretty similarly w/ minor differences here and there. But M$ is a software company and the consoles main purpose, playing games, plays toward their strengths better than Sony who's strength is in hardware, and not computer hardware at that, but electronics,

C)Online - Again, M$ as a computer software was more suited in my opinion to creating a strong online presence w/ good infrastructure and reliability. It didn't hurt that they had a few years worth of head start on Sony who just seemed completely behind the times when it came to online functionality. Sony's failure to recognize the direction that the industry was moving toward in this regard was a BIG sign to me that the 360 was the way to go.

It's not the price itself thats the problem for me. It's that the price does not equal the value (for me personaly).

I can understand if you have an HD TV, a collection of blue-ray movies, and want to have an mp3 player in the living room, then it is a good value, cheap even.

The problem is the only thing I want is a gaming machine. And when I look at it as gaming machine there is a small selection of games (currently) that I would be interested in. The biggest sellers to me would probably be RPGs like Final Fantasy and Dragons Quest or if there were other "must play" RPGs for it that were exclusive but even then its a lot to pay.

Today I probably wouldn't want to spend over $250 on it. I imagine as the game library builds and the price drops to around $400, then maybe.

I think Sony made a mistake going with the entertainment center approach. Some features are like buying a Tivo when you don't have a TV or getting a second stereo for the same room. Useless. They just bloated the price of what is a really nice looking gaming machine.

The price is higher than the traditional norm. With MS bundling service with the 360, it's a bit hard for Sony to say the cash goes to running the network. If the console does manage to live up to the 10 year claim, then $600 may not be a bad value.
But the inclusion of blu ray seems like Sony is trying to force feed the tech to gamers, and prop up Sony Pictures in the process.
I don't currentlyown an HDTV, but I was planning on getting a 360 after I do which shouldn't be too far in the future. If Sony gave me a break on a TV with the unit, that would certainly influence my decision.

Make the unit hacker friendly. I might be inclined to pick it up and tinker with it then. I'm not a top notch programmer, but I wouldn't mind working with a team doing amateur development. Take that energy like you find in the PSP hacking community and channel it into something positive for the community a bit like TiVo did.

With the high price tag, would it be safe to assume the console is aimed more at adults with careers? How about some focus on games that would appeal to this audience? there are a lot of things I have come to appreciate more recently than I was able to 5-6 years ago. This does not mean make AO pornographic/ultraviolet games. Use TV as an example, there are a lot of programs that are more 'adult' in nature that are not blood baths or sex on a grand scale. It's a bit hard for me to put my finger on, but I'm sure folks with more experience with media could point some things out.

I have other little quibbles, but they are about Sony the company. their behavior has made the entire affair hard to swallow. My option of Sony will be lowered another notch if they revel they are putting rumble in the new controller after they spent all that time acting like it was unimportant, or even undesirable feature. I would buy a PS3 in a heart-beat if they removed the Blu-Ray. I don't like them jacking up the price just so they can force their format on me. Plus the DVD-player on my PS2 is a piece of crap, why should I believe the Blu-Ray on the PS3 will be any better.

i bought the 360 because i wanted a next-gen game console, and it had great games. and comparing the price to PS3, it was a no-brainer; Xbox360 is the way to go. No, Sony, don't sell me an entertainment center; everything else you sell is comparably too expensive.

i don't contest that yeah, maybe someday i'll need to get a Blu-ray player if and when it becomes the standard. however, as was the same with DVD, i didn't buy one until they released cheap ones under $100, and the only reason i bought one (Pioneer) was because there wasn't any region locking for the model. and now that i have a DivX player, i only rent 3-5 DVDs a month.

I've been a playstation fan since the PS1 came out. Had the PS2 the 2 weeks after launch. When the PS3 was coming out though, and I saw the price, granted, I was a little put off by it. Anyways, on to the real question.

1. Why take away things that "they" consider "not next-gen"? Why was the rumble left out of the new controller? Force feedback in the PS2 controller was great. I liked feeling it vibrate when playing an intense FPS or when you unleashed some awesome quickening from FF12. This was very disappointing for me. It felt as if Sony was moving away from what made them different. Granted MS was going to add this to their new controller on the 360 when it came out, but who cares?! Why wait until you have to go into litigation over a product license before you finally realize that you've made a huge mistake?

2. Why such a horrible base of launch titles? I was extremely disappointed at the launch titles for the PS3. I felt that Sony had some very big hitters that they could have brought onboard for the PS3 launch. God of War 2 being one of them. One of their highest selling games, with a highly anticipated sequel, and they bring it out on the PS2 instead of launching it on the PS3. I felt that if Sony had done more dev time on the launch titles, that this would have been a determining factor in my buying of a PS3 as well as a lot of other people.

3. Price? Well, when I first heard the PS3 was going to be coming out, I was hoping for the "premium" model to be in the 500 dollar range, at most! Finding out that a lower model was going to be offered with less features decidedly turned me away from the "value" model as well. I felt that if the PS3 had used accessories more for upgrades rather than only offering 2 models that this would have significantly changed my decision. I thought that MS did make the right choice by allowing the user to by upgrade HDs for for it along with other accessories. Again, Sony went against the grain. By doing this, the alienated their user base. You only have 2 choices. Now, only 1. If HD capacity was something that we all wanted, don't they think that we would have been willing to buy upgradeable HDs for the units if they sold them? By allowing them to do things like this, they could have saved on manufacturing costs as well as have a starting price point, that looks favorable to the average gamer and the average gamers pocket book. I felt that Sony was pushing the cost of the unit down to the gamer, which never should have been done. Granted, I understand that the company needs to make their money back on what they are developing. But like a great many of you have said, I'm a gamer, I don't care if it plays blu-ray movies! The only reason I liked blu-ray was due to capacity issues. I knew that this would allow for bigger games to be developed and put onto single discs, vs the 2 and 3 discs sets of the old days ;)

4. HDTVs. I honestly wanted to wait until I had an HDTV before I thought about buying one. I figured if I was going to experience the PS3 way Sony wanted me to experience it, that I would need an HDTV. Once the PS3 came out, it seemed that every TV that had HDMI ports on it, was having problems with the PS3 and the way the PS3 handled the HDMI signal. This was found to be because the PS3 used HDMI 1.3 standards, vs the current 1.2 implementation. So, because the PS3 uses HDMI 1.3, how hard is it going to be for me to find a new HDTV that is using the HDMI 1.3 standard? Or am I going to just have to take a giant $1700 swing and pray for the best? This was very displeasing to me in a lot of ways. Considering that at the time, i was looking at buying a Sony HDTV, but those were having problems as well. Although, to be fair, these issues were easily resolved by buying a HDMI > DVI adapter on most HDTVs. Again, this is something the average consumer shouldn't have to worry about.

Truely, what would it take for me to buy a PS3? Just have Sony be honest for once an

Not to mention the PS3 does not include a HDMI or HD-Component Video cable out of the box. It only includes the 15 year old Yellow-Red-White AV cable. So on top of the money you'd have to spend for the console and the HDTV, you'd have to put out another 29.99-49.99 for either the component HD cable or the HDMI cable.

Another reason I'm disinterested in the PS3. Sony says they make a next gen, high definition console, price it insanely high, and then only include a 15 year old AV cable? Ludicrous.

but honestly, i dont think sony needs to do anything. the wii currently is more of a gimmick (i know, i know... but hear me out). it will die off eventually, and much sooner than the others. it also wont fill the void when the hardcore/moderate gamers start to realize that they are tired of the 400th rerun of mario. (and before i get jumped... yes, i did own one, and my son still has his, although it is now collecting large amounts of dust.)

the only real gaming systems on the market at the moment are the 360 and ps3. and microsoft is handing the business to sony on a silver platter. i loved my original xbox almost as much as i loved/love my ps2. but upon going though 2 consoles (and a scratched disc) almost immediately after release... i was a little pissed off. i sold it, and vowed never to return. 8 months later, i decided to give it one more shot. there were games out, and coming out on the 360 that i really wanted to play. 3 more consoles later. im done. forever. i sold my 360 after getting my final warranty return about 2 weeks ago.

and im surprised honestly that it hasnt been picked up, but according to even microsoft themselves, their sales are showing it. extending a warranty to 3 years is all fine and dandy, but if i cant play when i want to because my console is in for repair... or if i waste an additional $70 on another game because my original was chewed up... how much do you think i would be investing in the platform?

the public at large is already sick of the 360 and its issues, and its sales are starting to reflect that. i dont think sony needs to do anything but keep coasting along. they will sell.

but as for avg joe right now: price. i bought one on release day, but the last two weeks have shown that price is the big factor. outselling the wii and the 360 combined on amazon (as well as elsewhere) is no small feat.

You're clearly speaking for yourself and not for the "public at large". The X360 continues to out sell the PS3 2:1 in monthly sales figures and the staple franchise of the Xbox library, Halo, is still 2 months from release.

Handing the industry to Sony? Hardly. Microsoft got a lot of "cred" for upping their warranty and finally admitting their console has flaws. Meanwhile, Sony is off in their little corner shooting off at the mouth with corporate rhetoric that can be disputed by anyone who has paid even a little attention to the "console wars".

While Sony is off shooting at the mouth, once exclusive publishers are jumping ship and releasing titles for both consoles.. so who is handing whom the silver platter?

In my area alone, the Elite X360s are sold out at every retailer and each retailer who maintains order lists are backordered until Christmas.

I'm sorry you had such problems with your X360, but the sales numbers prove the X360 is outselling the PS3 by a margin of 2:1, and has been since release. That doesn't sound "tired" at all.

I'm not a die hard gamer. I went from an 8-bit Nintendo (a gift) to a used Sega Genesis (another gift). Then a PSOne until about 4 years ago when I got a PS2 (a gift).

What would it take? Partly, a price tag of about $150.

Additionally, most of the games coming out have a big "online" component. I don't have a high speed internet connection, and would be unable to take advantage of this. Obtaining high-speed would be just another expense that I'd have to incur to play some games. It's just not worth it for me.

Perhaps in several years (like 6 or 7) the price will drop to something that I would consider to be within my financial capabilities. I'm sure I'll have high speed access by then, since dial-up will probably be extinct.

This has to be the most inane drivel of a response I've read on the editorials, ever.

So if someone is buying an already outrageously expensive HDTV, they should go ahead and buy a console which just happens to have an HDMI output? Why, exactly? For Blu-ray, a format that hasn't yet "won" the next gen video battle?

Last I checked, the X360 Elite supports HDMI and comes with a cable out of the box. No, it doesn't have next gen video playback, but - and how many people have to say this before it sinks in, especially to Sony - I'm not interested in a gaming console to play next generation movies. If I want next gen video playback, I'd rather have a stand alone system. I'd rather not put wear and tear on my gaming console by using a secondary function like watching movies. Except, right now, for the PS3 watching Blu-ray movies seem to be more like a primary function and it appears this will be its function for many months to come.

If I'm inclined to spend 500 dollars on top of my TV purchase for a console, I'm going to get something which has a games library, and that something isn't the PS3.

i agree with Captiosus, i care too much for my gaming console to use it for anything else. especially since this generation's consoles cost much more than the last.

even if a blu-ray add on became available for the 360, i'd still wait for the REALLY cheap stand-alone ones to come out before i buy. am sure the Chinese and the Koreans are probably gonna sell blu-ray players below $100 eventually, just like they did for DVD players.

i can imagine why PS3 owners would also use their consoles to play Blu-ray movies, to the point of driving up the demand for Blu-ray movies above HD-DVD. let me put it this way: i hardly HAVE TIME to watch movies, since i'm too busy playing through 6 XBOX360 games alternately (and one of them is Oblivion, which is only 1 disc for the 360).

I play both systems and was an xbox fanatic until the constant hardware failure and seemingly unending milking for money. There were games on the PS3 I wanted to play, as well as PS2 games.

That said,

I didn't spend much more money initially on the PS3 with everything in it than by getting the 360 premium and having to add the wireless adapter, quick charge cables, batteries, LIVE etc.. MS just gets your money in smaller increments.

Sony's online, while it isn't xbox live now, does have hooks to get into games. We have a PS3 clan in 2old2play and can arrange game nights and times and get everyone together that way. We are trying to build the community on the PS3. We need people from this site to hop on board and play. Yes, you can have friends in xbox land and PS3 land. Supposedly the XMB will be integrated into games in an update coming soon which function-wise pretty much duplicates LIVE. Maybe it will work well, maybe not. But the tools are there.

Yes, there are a bunch of cross platform games, but it is the Sony exclusives that will make the system worth owning. Ratchet and Clank, Little Big Planet, Resistance, Warhawk, Drake's Fortune, Lair, God of War plus a bunch more make the system worth it.

The price cut did it for me. Maybe I'm part Sony fanboi or the fact that I hate M$ with a passion (btw, I have a 360 as well). Everybody talks up "LIVE" but I find it full of just complete asshole kids, and GOW and Halo just don't do it for me. My 360 is in parts and hasen't even been turned on in a month at least. The ps3 is on right now installing Linux and I can hear the fans on my laptop over the ps3 easily, try that with a 360. I paid about as much for my 360 as I did for my ps3 (with wireless, blu-ray and a 60gb hd) . I've already watched a blu-ray movie and it looked fantastic, even the wife said it looked better than dvd. Overall, I feel the ps3 is just an all around better machine, now they need to bring the games and "home" and my 360 is going up on ebay (well, maybe not, for some reason I really enjoy "99 Knights"). I guess it really comes down to what tickles your pickle.

I am old fashion and know it may be costly to create a gaming console, but the console isn't what sells me on buying one. I don't believe a gaming console is worth more than $100-150 US Dollars. And the reason I believe this is you have to buy games you like in order to use it. With the first Xbox you had a hard drive. You could add your favorite songs to it and use your system for more than just games. The games they're coming out with on these consoles are too much of a hack and slash for an old gamer like me. I am always interested in turn based games whether RPGs or Strategy. They are taking away the reasons I like RPGs in the first place. You want me to buy a Sony PS3, then it's simple. Turn base battles, turn based strategy games. Get a good strategy game like Galactic Civilizations II Dread Lords. The games are what convince me on a sony PS2. The PC is still making better quality games. The key here is TURN BASE GAMES. It's the games that sell the consoles, the consoles don't sell the games
