Upgrade Your 360 HDD On the Cheap

by surelikebarbq| Published: Tuesday, April 24 @ 11:43:38 EDT
With $80 and a little spare time, 360 owners looking for a little extra room may be able to avoid Microsoft's expensive hard drive upgrade. Since the announcement of Microsoft's 120gb hard drive upgrade, many 360 owners have been crying "foul." Retailing at $179, the drive costs more than double than similarly-sized PC HDDs. But thanks to a mysterious hacker, gamers may now have a cheaper alternative.

Do-it-yourselfers can use the newest version of TheSpecialist's HDDHackr and a very specific Western Digital drive to perform the upgrade. The program, originally believed by many to be useless, takes advantage of the 360's ability to now recognize 120gb drives. Of course, until MS decides to release even larger drives, 360 owners will be stuck at 120gb for now.

But at a mere $80, the new drive comes at a price that even Microsoft can't beat.

This is not an upgrade for dummies. It's an upgrade for people who are into tinkering and a bit of a hacker themselves. The biggest stumbling block i see is it needs a couple files off the HDD to be put onto your own HDD. So hopefully those become available somewhere for download.

And you see... even though it's not an easy endeavor to do this, I'd like to see MS justify that extra $100 now. One excuse I heard is that their requirements that a drive has to meet is so very high, but c'mon. You can't get much better or more reliable than a Western Digital hard drive. Perhaps now we can expect a press release saying that due to the investigation of the gaming community, MS now knows that a certain Western Digital hard drive will be very acceptable for use in the Xbox 360 and they are switching production over to the new brand. Hard drives will now be $95.99 (I'm sure people would pay a $15 markup for the proprietary connection and not having to hack hack hack, don't you?). Oh wait.... we'll never see that. Greed is an ugly thing. Do you suppose the developers of the 360 hardware and peripherals believe their own PR banter about all this stuff being worth it? I hope not.

Reading the comments under the linked to article (mainly xbox360 kids bitching on the PS3 and vice versa) serve as a good reminder why 2O2P is the only games site I read regularly.

Thanks 2O2P for filtering out most of the crap!

The Datel XSATA allows you to store crap from your 360 HDD on to your PC. Just one more option if your interested.

Third party solutions for first party overpriced B.S.
