Time Magazine Online Says "PS3 Failed"

Time's Online magazine ranks Sony's PlayStation 3 as one of the top five over hyped failures...

Time says that PlayStation 3 wasn't nearly as awesome as the hype suggested:

"The big story in computer games this year was HOW TO BLOW A HUGE LEAD, by Sony. Its PlayStation 2 was the champ in the last round of the console wars. This time Sony bet on a chip called the Cell and a disc format called Blu-ray. They're probably awesome, but how would anybody know? The PS3 is hideously expensive--it goes for up to $600--and Sony manufactured only a piddling few hundred thousand for the U.S., fewer for Japan. Plus it's hard to write games for; the launch titles were lame. You know you're in trouble when you get beat by something called a Wii."

The PlayStation 3 was referenced with four other over-hyped products:

  • Snakes On A Plane - A movie that looked good...ok, it looked really bad.
  • If I Did It - A book and TV interview about how O.J Simpson would have killed his wife and her friend.
  • Studio 60 - A NBC TV show.
  • Bode Miller - Expected to win a bunch of Olympic metals, fails to gain any.

Does the PlayStation 3 really fit with a failed TV show and a canceled TV interview/book? Perhaps the closest PlayStation 3 comparison would be Snakes On A Plane. A product that launched poorly and didn't bring in nearly the revenue people would have initially expected.

Many of us were waiting to see Sony recover from all the negative press associated with the PlayStation 3 but the negative attention continues today. Maybe 2007 will be the year Sony says "I told you so" - if the Wii runs out of steam.

I was at toy R us getting something for my kids when I saw my first PS3.
It is pretty, but next to it there was a empty shelve for games. One game looked interesting COD3 (total 5 games on the shelve). that was it.
How can you sell a console and so very few games. Is not the purpose of the console to be a video gaming machine?

To Sony's defense, the PS3 has only been out for a monthish and there are many games in the works that will shine a better light on it, so we just have to wait it out. The 360 launch titles were pretty bland for the most part, nothing that couldn't be had on another system. However everyone will have to look to the PS3 exclusive titles to see any differentiation in the graphics, as companies like EA and Ubisoft will make their multiplatform games side-by-side and not spend much time tweaking the graphics to be better for the PS3 because the cost simply isn't justified. Maybe Killzone will show us that the PS3 is worth a damn, maybe it won't. We'll see if it lives up to the hype with Phil Harrison still attesting that the graphics are just as amazing in-game as the cinematic we saw at E3 2 years ago. I call shenanigans.

With not enough PS3's on the shelves this Christmas and the huge price tag if you do find one, Bill Gates must be laughing his ass off. I have a funny feeling that the 360 sales for December are going to be huge.

Just a few months ago I thought Sony would never screw this up. Maybe they thought they were to big of a Goliath for David to knock down, regardless of how they handled the launch?

In my opinion, Sony really messed up this time around and they are surely going to lose market share. The only question is how much market share are they going to lose?

I knew they were in trouble when I realized that I was not going to be able to buy one when it first came out. I have a good income and my wife works too. So I have no problem shelling out money for $50 to $60 games and 300-400 dollar systems. However, at a starting point of $600, plus having to buy 1-2 games and accessories, the starting cost of the PS3 was easily $750. I can't justify that price. I could justify the Wii and I could justify the 360, but the PS3 shut me out due to the price. And I know if I can't afford it, then a lot of others can't afford it or will choose not to spend 600 to 750 dollars in that manner.

Will I eventually own the PS3? You bet I will, but only after the price comes down.

Had some of the same problems with these launch systems also. Remember all of those systems for 360 crashing? Tons of defective systems. Microsoft also put out limited quantities of the 360.Everyone also bitched about the price. Also didn't have strong launch titles. Almost every one of the launch games(with the exception of Call of Duty 2)were horrible or just very bad ports from the X-box versions. Nintendo screwed over many Zelda fans by putting out Twilight Princess on the Wii first, before the Gamecube version. Then putting out limited quantities for those people who still had Gamecubes.

I'm definitely no Sony fanboy, but until the big 3 decide to put out more systems on the market, then every 5 years it will be this same bullshit.

I'll be completely honest. I love the 360 and I "like" the Wii. And I am sure that I would enjoy the PS3.

But all 3 companies have disappointed me to some extent. As I said earlier, Sony priced the PS3 too high (in my opinion) and they should have had a better launch strategy.

Microsoft shipped a bunch of defective units, and yes, I got one of them. For $400 plus, you shouldn't have to worry about getting your machine repaired. At least they did free repairs for people who bought one before Jan 1. That kept me on the bandwagon, because I don't know if I would have spent $150 to get my 360 repaired.

Nintendo is not all that great either. Zelda is a solid game, but they teased us with it for about 2 years. I am really wondering how many other hit games will come out for this system. My biggest problem is that the online service is not fully functional out of the box. It took a month to get the forecast channel.

In the end, evidently I was not too disappointed. I still bought the Wii, I still bought the 360, and one day I'll own the PS3.

Is the bomb. The machine is one dependable kit of hardware if you ask me. Maybe I have the odd one out, I don't know, but I can't identify with at least one Xbox-bad-luck story out there!

Even my classic still works like a charm.

And if there had been a Xbox before the classic and the 360, I'd bet that one would still be working aswell...

I have never had a system die on me and I have owned the Atari, NES, Super NES, 64, PS1, PS2, Xbox 1, and Gamecube. I never thought the 360 would die. I had a launch system and it lasted a year and then BOOM. Dead as hell. Since I had it repaired (for free) it has worked great.

I don't know a lot of other gamers, but the ones that a 360, all of them died. One guys I know had to repair his twice.

I am not a Sony fan per say but I dont think they have failed at all yet. They have sold every console they put out so far and almost every game. This trend may continue untill spring of 07'. The real deal will be whether or not they can take players from LIVE. I wont buy a PS3 untill I see a couple games worth playing. For me the 360 "does it"

Sony has failed if they can't start turning a profit with PS3 related items. Basically the future of Sony's electronics division rides on the PS3. If it can't make some serious cash then the shareholders will see no option but to begin cut some fat where needed. They have spent a lot of money developing this thing. Now they're spending more money to advertise the PS3 as a lifestyle brand. Spending money advertising an item that can't even be bought in a store isn't always the smartest move. It could lead to increased hype and excitement for the brand or it could alienate it's potential customers. Maybe Sony hasn't failed outright yet but they are on their way.

In my opinion, Sony has indeed already failed. From a profit standpoint, they will make money off of the PS3, but you have to think about market share.

In the last generation, the PS2 dominated the market and owned about 75% of the market, with the XBox and Gamecube making up the other 25%.
Analysts are predicting now that Sony's market share will drop down to about 45%. That is simply a sign of poor performance. How do you let your market share drop that far?

Another hit that Sony is going to take is the problem of exclusive titles. A major reason for the PS2 success was Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City. They were exclusive to the PS2 and were responsible for selling consoles. What game is going to drive those sales for the PS3?

In the end, only Blu-ray can make this a REAL success for Sony. If the Blu-ray market explodes, then Sony will dominant the HD DVD market and sell a ton of PS3's as well. If Blu-ray fails, then all Sony did in this generation was releasing a good system at a high price, a year after their main competitor.

Sony might have a more powerful console but by the time it catches up with the 360 Microsoft will probably be moving on to the Xbox 720 (Wait, can I copyright that?). If Sony tries to jump ahead of Microsoft by launching the PS4 they will alienate the people who spent $600 on a PS3. I really don't care who comes out on top, I just hope the competition keeps the game quality high.

I hope they stay well clear of the console-market. Apple has a very very bad reputation in the Netherlands. It's so bad even that people give their Apple-systems away because people will not even pay for an used system!

I was in WalMart tonight, and heard the electronics dude announce that they had them on the shelves. Well, I really want a 360, but I thought it might be a good idea to grab one and sell it. Well, WTF? They're not selling at all on EBay.

I realize that the 360 is going to do well, especially when Halo 3 hits, but this round goes to Nintendo.

Nintendo has certainly done quite well for themselves, however I wouldn't call them the overall winner. The leader, as of right now, should be Microsoft. They have a great system with some kick ass games (current and upcoming), with the best online system, and units in stores ready to be bought.

But are they really competitors? I don't think so. Sony and Microsoft are going head to head. Nintendo is another breed of video game right now. I compare it to someone's car collection. The 360 and the PS3 are like an expensive car. Which one do you buy, the Camaro or the Mustang? The Wii is like a motorcycle. It is fun to ride, but it doesn't replace your main mode of transportation.

I can easily see this scenario though. Many people do not have the means to own all 3 systems. I think most people will own EITHER a PS3 or a 360, and then compliment that system with a Wii.

Sony shot herself in the foot. Plain and simple.

The big N should return to churning out games'n'watches again. She's like a Guru of some esoteric religion without disciples. No longer a factor in the market if you ask me. How many games can you make until people grow tired of swinging a remote around all-day? It's a gadget, not a serious alternative.

Xbox is top-dog now. It's a great console, assecoires are good and affordable, games rock your world. The on-line service is at an unseen before level. Trailblazing made look easy.

I am over the whole controller now. I have been playing Zelda since the release date and I only like using the controller for a few things.

At some point, the controller gimmick will get old and your games will have to speak for themselves. Also, they should stop creating things for the controller and instead let the controller come to the game. It is like they are creating stupid things for the controller to do that a simple button press should be able to do.

There's something about the Xbox... Maybe the huge Sega influence in the controller, I don't know.

When I first saw the Xbox-classic I was saying to myself: Dreamcast on steroids! I bought one right then and there and even though I already owned a PS2, I never looked back.

The 360 was a natural upgrade.

Even now I still can't help but thinking that the 360 is something Sega would have arrived at in the end.

I liked the orginal XBox, although is was almost a big failure. If not for Halo, there would not be a successful XBox 360 in my opinion. Halo saved the first XBox.

With the XBox 360, Microsoft learned from their mistakes AND they are capitlizing on the very thing that Sony and Nintendo screwed up on: Online Gaming.

XBox Live is easy to use and worth every dollar. Other online services are just going to be playing catch up from here on out.

Kudos to MS and N for weathering the storm! I am not a Sony (in general) hater, I am just sick of the overhyped PS3! I think they generally make great products, but it looks like they got a little too big for their pants! :D
