The Old Spice Challenge is Challenged

by tank| Published: Tuesday, February 13 @ 12:18:25 EST
The Microsoft Rewards program went live yesterday Feb 12th, albeit some bumps in the road. It seems that some gamers were a bit annoyed when the official site did not go launch at midnight as expected. Even the masses that chose to take the day off to unlock achievements, couldn’t register until around 5pm PST.

The frustration of waiting for the site to go live didn’t end at 5pm however. Much like everything Microsoft tries the first time around, they seriously underestimated demand, server requirements and bandwidth. The Rewards website was buckling under the pressure of seemingly thousands of gamers trying to get registered. All gamers were getting was a webpage time out error after long waits.

While cruising Major Nelsons’s blog, it seems some creative gamers had found several ways to get around the site problems and actually got registered. This morning however, the site is still about as bad as it was last night. If you can even manage to get around the server timeout webpage, any Rewards pages you try and load typically fail to display.

The community after getting registered are fairly disappointed with the Old Spice Challenge though. Many of the material prizes are limited to 2500 in quantity while there are some 5 million Xbox Live members. So unless you take the day off to unlock your 1500 points, most likely all these prizes will be taken within 48 hours. So if you were planning on taking the full two months to unlock your 1500 points, all you’ll end up with for your effort is an Old Spice gamer pic (we can hear your excitement from here). If you don’t have Contra, there’s a chance you’ll be able to snag that if you take more than 48 hours to unlock all the points because it at least has 70,000 in quantity.

To full list of prizes with quantity is as follows:

Fusion Frenzy 2 (2500 units) Level 3 prize
T-Shirt (2500 units) Level 3 prize
200 Points (2500 units) Level 3 prize
100 Points (6000 units) Level 2 prize
Contra (70,000 units) Level 1,2,3 prize

Although this seemed like a great idea when initially announced a week ago, it’s really failed to live up to expectations. The Rewards website does hint at other reward programs coming in the future. So we can only hope Microsoft is busy taking notes at all the failures of this challenge and fixes them for next time.

Really the only reason that this peaked my interest, was the "chance" to get a free copy of Fusion Frenzy 2 (mini-game fun), perhaps even some free MS points. Now that it has become more of a contest than a challenge, I really don't have the same desire to compete against Timmy and "Guy who lives in parent's basement".

So far, it seems that all of these programs that MS creates, are catering to this kind of "has nothing better to do" crowd. I really hope that they try to figure out a way to include us normal folk in the future.

But then again, are we the norm? Or is MS really targeting their main customer base?

Once word of the 2500 limit of tangible prizes got out, you could hear the collective groan of 360 fans across the country. I can see maybe putting some sort of limit on Fusion Frenzy, but why put such a low cap on the T-Shirts and especially the MS points? And why even bother announcing that the contest will run for 2 months when in all likelyhood any prizes worth having are going to be spoken for within the first day.

Things like this tend to infuriate fans more than excite them. I guess bad press is better than no press.

I finally got thru the buggy system and registered at level 2. There's no way I'll win a "prize" with such small quantities. Still, the rules and agreement you sign up with mentions nothing about limited quantities. They say that if you get 1,500 by April 12th, you get the rewards. They had a long time to come up with the proper rules instead of getting people's hopes up. The prizes really aren't worth the trouble it takes to get them.

Thank you for the incredible response to Xbox Rewards. The gaming community's interest has temporarily overloaded our servers and caused delays for those trying to register.

To help ensure everyone who wants to participate has the opportunity, the Old Spice Experience Challenge will be extended by three days. Now you have until April 15th 2007 to increase your Gamerscore by 1,500.

As a bonus, we are adding more rewards for this challenge, which means more gamers who successfully complete the challenge will get rewarded.

Our development team is hard at work to fix the problem. We expect the web site will be ready in 48 hours, please be patient and check back periodically.
