The Headaches of On-Line Game Rentals

by Lithium| Published: Sunday, February 11 @ 22:44:30 EST
Ever sign up for something and get more than you bargained for? Well personally, I have on more than a dozen occasions. My most recent folly involved the on-line game rental services.

Like most people I thought, "What a great idea! This is going to be easy and well worth the monthly fee..." What I never took into consideration is the possibility of errors. My grandpa always told me: "The more working parts something has, the more prone it is to break." Without getting into specifics, lets take into consideration how many parts there are to an on-line game rental service: First you have the website, then distribution, the Postal Service, and even to a small degree Customer Service. That's a whole lot of steps that are out of your control.

What can go wrong? Well, we took a poll earlier this week asking for on-line rental headaches that happened to any 2old2play members. These are the questions we asked along with the percentage of members affected by them.

  • Game Lost In Mail When Returning to Service Provider: 27% This actually was my problem and my motivation behind this article. Not only does this clog your steady flow of new games it also brings up customer service issues. Some service providers will write off the game once you report the loss and a period of time passes (usually two weeks). Others may have you go to the USPS to resolve the issue. Since missing mail must be reported by the sender this is one headache that I'm sure none of us would like to deal with. Hard part is, this happens, and if you plan on using any on-line game rental for an extended length of time this issue is bound to come up.

  • Game Never Reached Me: 0% No one had complained of this issue as of this article. Makes me wonder how come so many get lost on the way back. Obviously 2old2play is only a cross section of the gaming world, but 0% is still great no matter how you slice it.

  • Game Took 2 Weeks Or More to Reach Service Provider: 9% Generally, when this happens the game is 'lost' in the distribution facility. If you think about it, any sizable service provider has a customer base in the thousands. On some days its possible for hundreds of games to arrive. They are bound to drop the ball on some of them and misplace some in the shuffle. Most times, when you report the game missing they will match it in the distribution facility. Choosing a service that also rents movies only compounds this problem.

  • Game Took 2 Weeks Or More to Reach Me: 9% Days off for the Postal Service, slow distribution facilities, and distribution facilities that are clear across the country. Make sure that when you do sign up for a service that you look into the locations of their distribution facilities. Many services post it on their site. Find a service that has one close to you.

  • Got A Game That Was Not On My List: 0% That's a good sign. Golf Clap anyone?

  • I Have A Hard Time Getting Newer Releases That Are On My List: 45% This was the biggest problem. With the rising cost of games many people are looking to these services to get some of the games that they want to play, but may not necessarily want to keep. The demand for new games versus old is lopsided making it hard to fill requests for new games, but easy to fill requests for old ones. This means that if you have a queue of 10 games with newer games on top priority and older games on low, you're more likely to get that older game regardless. It's unfeasible for the service provider to get a copy of a new game for every customer that has it on their queue, so they get a percent of that demand and try to spread it out thin. If you have a large queue expect to get the old over the new.

  • I Received A Damaged Game: 0% While the poll showed zero, many people posted a complaint of receiving a faulty disk. Short of a tour, its impossible to say what happens when returned games arrive at the distribution facility. This problem has been around since the dawn of video rental stores. I can remember renting dozens of broken VHS cassettes and scratched DVDs over the years. There is no cheap solution for this problem and the service providers will continue to rely on us to report damaged games.

  • Billing/Cancellation Issue: 9% A member of 2old2play posted that it took three months to get his account cancelled. Sad to say, there is no easy button in your customer profile on the site. Most service providers make you phone in cancellations and it usually makes for a very awkward conversation with the customer service representative. Saying "Your service sucks!" usually opens a whole scripted can of worms and makes it a big headache. Best tell them that your system is kaput and you will not be replacing it.
What would a bunch of cons be with out pros? No punchline here. Rather than driving to the rental store only to find that they don't have what you want, you can instead browse on-line and let some one else pick the game off the rack. You'll also get more games for your buck in the long run. Not to mention there is no embarrassment when you need to rent Barbie: Horse Adventures for your daughter. Plus, since most of these service providers deal in games only and that means more to choose from.

Here are some quick tips for choosing a service provider:
  • Find one that has a distribution facility that is close to you.

  • Browse the site before you sign up and look for ease of website use and game choices (make sure they have what you are looking for).

  • Keep your queue small. This will make you more likely to get what you really want by reducing the choices the service provider has.

  • When you send a game back check your queue often to see if it arrived. If it has been more than seven business days since you sent and they show it out, report it missing.

  • If you want just games stick to a service provider that only rents games. However, if you do pick a service that offers games and DVDs prepare to get more movies than games
Remember: Stuff happens and there are few guaranties in life. Its up to you to look out for numero uno. Happy gaming!

I have been using gamefly for almost a year and never had a problem.
Until just the last 2 months.I have returned 4 games and only
1 made it back to them.I dont know what is going on.Except that maybe
the loser postal workers decided to start stealing. If I get charged for them I guess I'll stop renting online.

Out of all of the online rental companies, Gamefly is the best. I have had 0 problems with them to date and have been using them for well over a year, maybe two.

The only gripe I have is their lack of available 360 titles, however as the amount of titles grow, so will their availability on gamefly. The postal service did lose a game that I sent back to them, however it was resolved immediately and I was not charged for the missing game, they even sent the next game in my queue by "Fast Return".

I've been using Gamefly for over a year now. I've had a few problems where they didn't receive my returned game and I didn't receive a game they shipped me. It was cleared up without further doing on my part.
Gamefly is definitely improving since they are taking measures on getting games quicker in the mail and more in stock. I recommend that you don't use this service to get the new game releases the day it comes out (It's only happen once since I've been a member). I recommend Gamefly for the casual gamer and someone who purchases used games a few months after the game has been released. Gamefly gives discounts on used games that beats the prices for used games at Gamestop/EB Games.

My favorite part of Gamefly is the option to purchase the game that you are renting. I have yet to find a service that does it so easily than Gamefly. I find that buying used games from Gamefly is in fact cheaper than getting used at EB games, especially if you take in the discounts you get as a long term member.

I too had a couple of shipping issues with Gamefly, like when I return games to Gamefly it sometimes takes forever, or even I had to report the problem. But it has always been cleared up.

I agree that using gamefly can be slow, especially for a new release, but I was always of the opinion, if it is really worth getting, and not worth waiting for I would just go out and buy it. For example, I never had any of the 360 Tom Clancy Titles in my Q, I knew that I would just go out and by them on the day they arrived at stores

From what I'm hearing gamefly must have worked out some kinks then. Perhaps I will give them another shot.

I remember a year ago I had the gamefly service and about 3 months into using the service, which up until that point worked well, I had to wait 4 weeks...yep an entire month to get my game (any game) back from them. I complained that I shouldn't have to pay for a month of service, because I had to wait an entire month to get something, but they didn't seem to care. If that has been corrected then Im all in again.

Gamefly isn't available in Canada, so I use a service called GameAccess.ca. I've been subscribed since May and really like the service.

My only complaint is that they only have a single distribution point (Quebec, and I'm in Ontario), which means that it's usually 6-8 week days before I get my new game. I haven't had any delivery or other problems, so I don't know how good their customer service staff is to deal with.

When looking at a service like this, you have to take the good with the bad. I love being able to keep a game for as long as I want and not feel pressured to finish it to meet a return deadline. But the tradeoff is that you're usually 1 or 2 months behind the new releases and don't always get the game that is top on your list.

On average, I probably get an hour or so each night to play games, and I find that this sort of rental scheme is perfectly suited for that.

The canadian postal service is horrible for getting stuff around. In the US i can send a letter to anywhere on the west coast and it'll be there next day regular 1st class mail. Only complaint I have ever had is not getting new releases when they come out. They encourage you to keep your que full - I don't. I add new games I want to try right before the release date, and it seems to work. And when I rent one I really like, I end up buying it for 45.00 or so. Much better than 60.00.

If you get blockbuster online movie rentals you get one free in-store rental a week. So you can get video game rentals free. Some blockbusters don't let you rent games though even though it says right on the coupon Movie or Game. Problem is my local BB has a really crappy selection. I used to have two close by and the other one had a decent selection but they closed, so now i'm stuck with the crappy store :(

I have only been using GameFly for about a month, but I rented and returned a few in quick succession so I would see what happens. Since I'm a Westcoaster GameFly is able to get games back and fourth within two to three business days. Additionally, GameFly has something worked out with USPS so when they scan it in I immediately get an email notification that GameFly knows something is coming back and sends out the next in queue without even receiving what's out...SLICK!

I just started renting from GamezNFlix (found a coupon code for 25% off -- $10/month for 2 at-a-time). So far it's been pretty good (decent turnaround time), but I've heard after you've been a customer for a while, your queue is less of a priority than newer customers' queues. Time will tell on that one.

As an aside, GamezNFlix's mailer-envelope is near-impossible to open without tearing the hell out of it! I'm going to have to send Viva Pinata back all taped up.

I use Gameznflix and am relatively happy. True, the envelopes are impossible to open, but I do have the service where I have 6 out at one time (movies and games for less that GameFly).

They are pretty good about getting games to me but movies? Have a bunch in the queue and haven't seen a single one. And each has been out for at least 3 months. And, I had Rainbow 6 for the 360 in the queue for over 2 weeks and that was last month, cancelled it.

If they botch my Crackdown rental then I'll be quitting them. This game is the only one in my queue now along with 10 movies that have been there for 2 months in the queue.

So, having mixed feelings on Gameznflix. My wife hates them since she can't get any movies and I was getting games til Rainbow 6, we'll see come Feb20 whether I'll be getting my refund.

Plus, don't know about GameFly, but this company can only be reached by email. Customer No Service is king there since you have to access their site in order to see their cookie cutter replies.
