The Day I Walked Out On the PS3

by doodirock| Published: Monday, November 27 @ 12:08:12 EST
A story of how this gamer decided buying a Wii was the only choice for him, even when four PS3 consoles were available.

Today I decided it was time to finally go out and buy a Nintendo Wii. I had already missed buying one at the launch because I thought I would be able to just walk in and pick one up, so this time I was ready to rough it a bit. Most people had said that finding one was just a matter of being in the right place at the right time and that supply of the Wii seemed to flow fairly regularly. The day before I tried to snatch one of the 51 that Best Buy received, but again I got to the store only an hour before and missed the little console by a mere four places in line. It was time for a new plan.

This time I went for broke and showed up at my local Toys R Us at around 7 A.M. for the 10:00 A.M. opening. We had received a tip (similar to our best buy tip) that this particular store would have at least 100 consoles waiting to be sold. With those figures, my brother and I thought it would be a sure thing if we arrived three hours early. So there we were, two old guys waiting in line for a Wii at our local Toys R Us. To make matters worse, one of the mothers in line asked, "You getting one for your kids?" Um no lady, we're dorks and dorks game at all ages.

At 10:03 A.M. the doors finally opened and we led the charge into the stores gaming section. I was the first to the display when I asked the manager if they had any Wii consoles in stock. "Nope, sure don't," he said. He also had no clue when they were getting anymore in and told me to come back tomorrow. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to sit in front of stores all day and wait for a game system. Sorry, but contrary to popular belief, I do have some sort of semblance of a life. I told him thanks but no thanks and headed to the door. Before I could take two steps, he stopped me. "Hey, we just opened our inventory and we have four PlayStation 3 consoles on the truck!" Wow. I was in shock. I mean, I came here in search of the, supposedly, plentiful Wii and here were four of the rarest consoles on the planet ready for purchase. I had dismissed the PS3 since the launch date for the simple fact that I didn't think I would even have a chance to see one, let alone buy it. My first reaction was, "Hell yes, I'll take two!" After he began to take them out of the shipping boxes I actually thought about it.

"Do I really want a PS3?" In all reality there are no launch titles that I need. At least nothing that I can't already play on my tried and true Xbox 360. In fact, the whole point of me purchasing the Wii was because it was at least offering me a different gaming experience then the 360. So what did I need it for? Maybe it was the Blu-Ray player! Then again, I realized that my 360 could play HD-DVD's if I wanted to buy the add-on and even that seemed like a waste of money. I had been happy with my regular DVDs for years and really had no reason for the upgrade. I know, I'll sell them on Ebay and make millions and millions of dollars, right? With that notion I called up my sister and told her to hop on the computer and check some numbers for me. Oddly enough, the PS3 has plummeted to a minimal profit margin and, since these console were sold in two game bundles with a forced warranty, the payoff seemed almost worthless. I really didn't think tying up my credit card with a $1,000 dollar purchase during the shopping season would be worth it for a couple hundred bucks. So with that, we decided to leave.

The cashier was in total shock. "You want be able to get these till March if you leave now!" That maybe true, but shouldn't I actually want something that I'm going to buy? I think the sad fact is, I almost did buy the console on hype alone. Even after we made it out of the store and past the dumb founded cashiers I had this empty feeling in my stomach. Was I really just going to leave the PS3 without even buying one? Even my own brother succumb to the power of the hype and decided we had to go back. At the very least we must have some friends that want one and that would be enough to make the purchase necessary. Plus, there is no way the consoles would still be there with a store full of mothers and sons looking for a new holiday game system. Right?

Wrong. Even after 30 minutes and a full store, only one of the bundles had sold. The cashier looked at me like a pusher looks at a junkie as if he knew I couldn't resit the Sony hype machine. "Realized you were crazy huh?," he said. With that I began to dial up my closest gamer buddies and inform that I would be able to deliver them an "at cost" PS3 console system for the holiday. Each person I called said "no thanks." Even the people that waited in line for the PS3 at launch had decided to move onto the Xbox 360 or wait for a Nintendo Wii. No one wanted it! How could this be? Only two weeks after $10,000 sale prices, riots, robberies, assaults, and now no one ever cares? With that, I realized the PS3 just wasn't worth the hype. My brother looked at me and said, "Quick, lets head over to Circuit City now. If we can get there fast enough, we may have a chance at the Wii."

- doodirock

P.S. For those wondering, the system was a 20gig and not the more profitable 60gig version. It was bundled with 2 games and a mandatory $70 warranty.

I was one of those "buddies" that was able to buy it from him at cost and I passed.

Why? My first reaction was "ebay" but there is a hassle factor as well. I want to make at least $400.00 for the hassle. Account for shipping and all that and you're putting in a lot of additional cost.

The PlayStation 3 itself... I'd not want one for myself because there are no launch titles I care about. When the 360 came out it was a similar issue except I didn't have other alternatives to choose from. Now I can save up for a Wii and games or some new 360 launch titles... I just don't see the $600.00 stretching me (and that's before games).

Then there are christmas expenses, I have to get presents for the kids and local family. That's going to run me some cash, and if I drop $600+ on a PlayStation 3 I'll have little to spend for other gifts (not for me) before the credit card company cuts up my card :)

I put it up for bids online....hmmmm no real interested parties.

I have until Jan 5 to retutn it with sales receipt...hmmm

Should I keep it for the Blueray?....Should I wait to sell...maybe I should just return it????

The Sony Playstation 3 has nothing for me that the XBOX 360 doesn't already have. I think the consumers are buying other systems and forgetting about the Playstation 3 altogether.

This is great stuff. I hope everyone is having a similar reaction and not giving into the hype. It's rediculous! I am not anti-Sony, I think they make great electronics, but the PSx platform is so overhyped. I read every article I could get my hands on leading up to launch of both the X360 and the PS3 and found nothing that made me want to switch back to the Sony platform. There are some excellent articles out there that break down the systems in a a fair and balanced manner and what you find is that in the end the hardware has it's differences, but are in totality not really better than the other. So all you are left with is software and UI. MS has this locked down due to previous generation of XBL and years of application development.

Unfortunately the general public doesn't get this. Glad some people do and are resisting it. :)

you don't even have to be a PS3 hater. It's not that anti-sony is what everyone is about, but economically the box is a challenge to reason out costs especially during the holidays when you've got a lot of people to buy for...

And, I don't see doodirock as an anti-sony type of guy, he's a gamer. The price (and bundle restrictions) are enough to give you pause and think "should I?" Had it been a bit cheaper there would be less thinking and more stupid decision making.

Proof exists, look at the random crap around the checkout counter at any brick and morter store. It's not because the store is out of space... its because the stuff wouldn't sell otherwise and its cheap enough to make you choose incorrectly and purchase. Now Sony needs to sell to the general public and they're just not seeing the value in a PS3 over an Xbox360 at the moment. I'll admit I'm a huge Xbox fanboi, but I feel I have pretty good reasons: the Halo franchise, HD gaming on the original Xbox, the fact that most cross-platform games looked better and played better on Xbox than PS2 (according to game reviews).

That said, I do not own an Xbox360 yet. I guess technically I am a coveted demographic in that I have not yet weighed in on the "next-gen console wars". But I am hooked on Xbox Live play (Halo 2), already have a small arsenal of Xbox games, and see absolutely nothing compelling about Sony's latest machine. I don't need a Blu-Ray DVD player. I have a nice progressive scan DVD player for my bigscreen HDTV. I don't see any Sony-exclusive titles that I would even want.

So what price would I pay for a PS3 (meaning that I would drop my plans for a 360 and "go Sony")? I think it would have to be around $125 for a PS3 to make me even consider it alone. For a Wii it would be around $180. But at those prices I would be able to get a 360 also at some point.

I seriously hope the PS3 is Sony's biggest mistake since Betamax. It just might be.

I, too am waiting for the price of a 360 to come down before I buy one. Hopefully, they will be cheaper by November 15, 2007, Best Buy's release date for Halo 3.

I think you're right, it's all the hype that's been placed on it but now that they're out and we're getting reviews from people who don't have money being shoved into their pockets we're seeing that it's really not all that great. I saw Motorstorm in Best Buy and I saw some really bad aliasing. Seriously, this is supposedly the console that gives graphics on par with major motion pictures, complete with anti-aliasing.... but that was nowhere to be seen. It's bright and crisp, sure, but the edges of the objects say Sony's machine isn't as good as they say it is.

I started off really wanting a PS3.... then I decided $600 was too much, maybe I could spring for the $500 machine in a few months if it dips into the $400 range.... then I'm thinking there's nothing wrong with my 360 and I can get all sorts of hardcore gaming options on that, why not just get a Wii instead and have a much more accessible gaming experience for guests and people who aren't into games such as Gears of War? So now I'm a Wii guy. Sony... how far you have fallen... I used to love my PS2 so very much. *sheds tear*

I walked over and I was first in the area and I thought about getting it just to flip it on ebay but I remembered reading here that prices had fallen off and I couldn't come up with 1 good reason to own one for myself. My kids love Ninetendo, I bought them 2 DS lites for Christmas and I love my 360. I'm a big fan of games/systems and I generally buy new technology because I can't stop myself but I couldn't do it. I just didn't see any point to buying a PS3. I'm sure she still thinks she is going to step out tonight and there will be a PS3 running when she gets back. All the same reasons mentioned so far entered into my decision. I couldn't see buying the console for the one game I would purchase now (Resistance) when I'm still working through GoW and having a great time.

I still remember getting my 360 and playing PGR3 over and over. The "next gen" graphics while good, just hadn't lived up to the hype in the first months after launch. XBL is what kept me motivated. It was an easy to use, seamless experience and PGR3 was a lot of fun live. I knew the PS3 would be similar, but without the excellent online side.

There still may be a PS3 in my future, but not for another 6-8 months minimum.
