Problems and Cheaters Curb Stomp Emergence Day

by tank| Published: Monday, November 13 @ 20:31:28 EST
The Emergence Day tournament, in my opinion, was a pretty big FLOP.

I had visions of playing for 12 hours, so I obviously wasn't going to win but I expected to get in some good game play. I was more looking for the 100 kills per weapon achievements and the ones for wins on each map and each game type.

My day quickly turned to boredom and frustration. First, I tried to join a few matches. After 45 minutes of waiting to connect to ranked games, I just gave up. I didn't get to connect to one successful game either doing quick match or custom search. All I received was the dreaded "lost connection" pop up each time I tried. So I switched gears and decided I would host the match instead, at least this way I get a little bit of control.

Well that was just as much of a waste of time as connecting to games. I setup the first match, Warzone on Gridlock and waited... and waited... and waited... a good 20 minutes later I had six people connected in the lobby and soon after two more people joined in! So finally I got one match in, which lasted all of five minutes, since my team rolled over the other team twice in a row. For 20 minutes worth of waiting, I got in five minutes of actual gameplay. I gave it another shot and setup an Execution game on one of the other maps. I had various people one at a time come in and then leave due to the wait. One guy stuck it out for 10 minutes before deciding to move on. I finally terminated the game at 30 minutes of waiting. This is on Emergence Day, the day I would have thought most people would be playing ranked matches.

I eventually found a friend to play some Co-Op with and did that for the rest of the afternoon. Later on that day I jumped into some player matches. Both options offer much more play time per hour than the ranked system.

Where is everyone and why aren't they playing ranked matches? Well, the number one reason is, most likely, the fact that there's no ranked game support with friends. Microsoft told Epic not to put that in the game because it encourages cheating. Cheaters, being the creative folks they are, have figured a way around that barrier.

You setup a ranked game with a more rare setting for number of matches and IM the game/rounds settings to your buddies. They can then do a custom ranked game search and, most likely, find yours and connect to you from the list. Then, they proceed to own the group of four that connects afterwards since any organized group of people are going to roll over a group of rag tags any day.

This exploit encourages even more cheating of a devious variation. The team of friends can have one guy be a "spy," of sorts, and connect on the victims team. He can pickup weapons to try and prevent real players ("the victims") on his team from getting them. He also help his team by not playing seriously or with any skill level - so it's really five on three.

Unfortunately, if you are able to quick match into a game, you have no idea if this activity is going on or not... until you've become a victim of it yourself. Don't try and quit the match up if you become annoyed by this activity. More than likely they'll be quick to give you negative feedback!

So if ranked play is so painstaking, how do people have so many points on the leaderboards? They're "boosting," which is a moral form of cheating. You get points for downing an enemy. The team of friends on the one side have a friend on the other side. The team of four wipes out the three quick connect players leaving just their buddy on the other team alive. Then the team of four take turns shooting their buddy on the other team to the ground and then letting him get up, then shoot him again.

In an Execution style match, you get up after the bleed out timer runs out rather than dieing like other match types. The bleed out timer can be changed to the shortest amount of time: five seconds. So your buddies will beat on you until the timer runs out or one of the four finally curb stomps their buddy on the other team. The result is a very elevated 'boosted' points total by the time the game ends.

A lot this game is focused around ranked matches, especially if you're trying to unlock achievements. I totally understand the TruSkill requirement by Microsoft which does not let you game with your friends. This does help prevent boosting for leaderboards. However, there needs to be a second requirement for TruSkill ranked games: dedicated match hosting. Players shouldn't be able to host their own ranked matches if they're worried about cheating the leaderboards because as we see, with Gears of War, they may as well let you game with your pals.

I agree with some of the above. Boosting and having a "spy" on the other team is definitely uncool. However, I don't understand complaining about a group that is preformed. I guess it sucks to be owned by a better organized group but those are the breaks. It's like saying you can't play with your friends in paintball because you know each other and you might work well together. I get rolled over by preforms in WoW BG's all the time and I accept it as part of the game. I think it's sad that you can't easily get together with your friends to climb the boards. By the way, this is coming from a guy who sucks at this game online and still enjoys it.

It's not that "the better team" is winning, its that you don't have the same opportunity.

In order to have a fair match, both sides should be able to have the same fair chances at all things, no?

Imagine, if you were NOT allowed to know anyone on your paintball team, and met them as you were going in to battle. But, one of the other teams, that continues to win, are all friends which is clearly written as "against the rules."

So, is it "wrong" that you are not as good as the other team? Only if you didn't have the same chances of success as the other team.

I guess in Gears you could private chat 3 of your buddies and get them to enter the same room as you if you feel you are going up against a team, but chances are it won't happen for them to get in in time or anyway to prove those 4 other people know each other.

Call of Duty 2 was a good example of this, the entire multi-player aspect was built up to be much cooler than the original launch. Sure, much of this was because they launched it to make the window of release and probably "left stuff out" - but overall, enough forums lit up with complaints.

Perhaps, GoW will have an inbound patch to make it all better.

I would like to get some of the achievements, and I did get lucky. I ended up in 2 ranked matches all day because of similar problems, and I was fortunate enough to end up on a team of "talkers" and lucky enough to be better than everyone else...that one time. So I got one multi-player achievement, but with the risk of boosting and "spies" it really makes the multi-player experience a little lame. We REALLY need the ability to bring our friends in ranked matches, not for boosting and cheating, but so that we can opt to play with gamers who do it the right way!

The new MS rules are just a full plate for the cheaters.
Honest players will never make it to the top.
And worst, online achivemenst, bridgers galore.
TruSkill is nothing but a mith, does not exist.
You can't play ranked matches with your friends because you don't have an option on your menu, but you can always bridge yourself together. So all boosters do, is that, then become easy kills for their friends.
But that way very few honest players get abused, so very few complains about cheating, even when the amount of cheaters is growing.
It is all about treating honest players like mushrooms, just keep them in the dark and feed them shit.

Seriously, why is it that people find winning to be so friggin' important that they have to cheat in any way they can to win, regardless of whether or not it makes gaming really annoying for others? I'm not a particularly great game player, I have no delusions otherwise, so I just play because I enjoy it. Play for fun and if I do well, great, if not I'll likely just move on after awhile of getting pounded. But people who will do whatever it takes to win.... lamesauce. Grow up, get a life, it's a damn *video game* and does not make you a better person in life. If anything, I think that the MLG is going to be detrimental to gaming because it's going to encourage this kind of thing as gamers will try to do what's necessary (or even what's unnecessary) to be #1 so they can make boatloads of cash. Or at least enough that they don't have to do anything with their lives other than play games. No offense intended to our own MLG players, just these lamebags. I don't have a problem with MLG at all, just the fundamental problems it could create, a la Halo 2 where you're trying to hop online in a team training match for some fun with a friend and you get into a server with several level 26+ players on one side and you and some other people who are level 2 on a team. It's a slaughter and it's not at all fun, but I'm told it's "training" for them. To me, that's ridiculous. How can you really train for any sort of pro level gaming on a team that can't hold its own against you or pose any sort of challenge? I don't know, I guess people don't want to play if they can't completely annihilate the other team. Hobags. Grrr.....

Nice post Tank. I can only agree that not being able to invite friends to a ranked match bites and bites hard. Who doesn't want to play for fun and enjoy a good game while collecting a few ranked achievements? This definitely needs to be corrected...cheaters be damned.

Not to tangent to far, and good points have already been made, but cheaters have and will exist from now on...just like erectile dysfunction. Who knows what goes on in the mind of a cheater. I've cheated in games past...we all have. There's no satisfaction in it. How many Quake3 or Unreal tourneys have you old-timers participated in where opponents seem to have more health than available or always seem to grab quad damage at the most advantageous of moments. These guys are out there and we have to live with them.

But hey, I have little knowledge of the Microsoft Matrix and how XBL shakes out from a server standpoint etc. I'm a MAC guy and the 360 is the first Microsoft "product" I've purchased and I'm very happy with it. I do agree that leaderboards server little to no purpose...etc.

On a positive note for GEARS, some friends and I, all from this site, enjoyed some great MP rounds last night...the best yet. Some of these guys have signed up for the new GEARS clan here, ARTofWAR. If cheaters can setup an obscure round config and invite friends I don't know why we cannot do the same for the "right" reason and grab a few achievements while having a great time? Timmies would create a ranked match and set up a remote turret by an opposing friend's spawn and jump on it and fire continously into the spawn point. The opposing friend would then just run out and allow the quickest kill. This was very common to jump into a room and find squeeky voices gaining snipe, sneeker, and other ranked skill achievements.
My question is this... why do developers ignore other online games and the problems they have and then make a game thinking they solved the problem when they are fooling themselves. Developers need to take off the blinders and do thier homework.
And if it is M$ making the rules; leave it alone and let the community have a larger voice in what the live experience should be like. At least in H2 I can easily quit a cheaters match and rematch up with my friends and start acustom game in a jiffy. Currently in other MP games rematching with friends is either impossible or a pain in the ass.
Lets face it. The matchmaking of H2 formed this site. It was that good that it spawned hundreds of independent fan sites. Can anyone that is involved with our games get a clue? And if they don't think it is cost effective to maintain MP so closely as bungie, just wait until H3 comes out and see the dollars rolling out breaking new records.

Also, these guys aren't keeping the fact that they know each other a secret, so listen for any chatter going on.
