Pirated Games Get Awful Reviews?

by codemonkey| Published: Monday, June 23 @ 15:56:25 EDT

Atari is on a headhunt for pre-release reviews of their upcoming game Alone in the Dark, leaving us in the dark as to why their asking them to be pulled offline. They’re cause for action is based on the fact that these companies must have pirated the game and reviewed it illegally because it’s not out yet.

Consequently these “pirated” games always received less than fabulous reviews, ranging from a 50% or lower (star ratings of 5/10 in some of the better cases). These review sites have been told to rip down their reviews immediatly, stated by Atari themselves, or risk the consequences.

Of course, many of the press sites just hand them the finger as if to dare, while others comply to avoid any additional conflict. Some sites have received copies of the game legally through purchasing from retail outlets breaking street date, is this the fault of the reviewer?

It seems to me a few illegal copies of a game can be overlooked for additional publication about your title… unless, of course, the publications are saying your game sucks. Perhaps the pirated copies just have some bad game design which isn’t found in a legal copy, or, perhaps the game reallys sucks.

Is Atari doing the right thing here? If the copies are indeed illegal then persuing action is in their right but if they’re doing it to remove the scars of a bad review the negative press might hurt more than the negative game review ever could.

They must be giving it low scores because Atari probably wouldn't say anything if the game was getting 9s and 10s.

We should have expected low scores from this one. From the initial screens this game just screamed mediore. I have fond memories of the first on but the subsequent ones got worse and worse.

My guess is that Atari wants to keep this turd hidden as long as it can.

Well the game came out last week in the UK ( 20th ) so I'm assuming this is old news or they're hunting retro-actively for pre -release reviews ??
Strange, 'cos once its released, it makes no difference.
I don't understand why they would waste money on this ?

Apparently Atari will let you break the embargo (silence) date if you post a good review, however, if it's a poor review you have to wait until the game is released.... not cool.

Just take down the review until the release date, then repost. That'd be the biggest virtual finger they could throw at Atari, and would be fully within their right to do so.

Alone in the Dark is God awful. I couldn't even play it past the first 20 minutes the controls were so bad.

I find it slightly amusing that there are some who went through the effort to pirate this POS. At least they got the review right!

amen!!!!! This game sux BAAAAAAAAAAAAAD! The third person controls are so piss poor it makes the game play hindered at best. The FPS and a few other things are done very well. Its a shame they blew this one. But whats even worst is that they would have "Bad" Reviews pulled. The excuse they are using is lame as hell. Deal with it atari!!! You screwed the pooch on this one. Take it like a man and move on. Stopy being whiney about it.

Phil Harrison is the head over at Atari now, so one could only come to the logical conclusion that this game is going to suck.
