PS3 Lathers Up For $100 Price Shaving

by Devin Grimes| Published: Friday, July 06 @ 00:00:06 EDT

Kotaku reported on the rumor first, and now GameDaily has come up with all but definitive proof that Sony's PlayStation 3 will be receiving a USD $100 price cut starting the week of E3.

The speculation leading up to E3 has been focused on several key things, chief among them is whether or not we would receive a price cut on the extremely pricey 60 GB PS3. GameDaily contacted an anonymous store manager and came away with the following conclusion:

As it turns out, a merchandising manager (who wished to remain anonymous) at one of the world's biggest retailers has confirmed to GameDaily BIZ that the price drop is indeed retail-wide and it's scheduled to take place on July 12, although the first wave of ads to promote the PS3's new price won't kick in until Sunday, July 15.

Once again, Sony looks to have failed at keeping a secret, but more importantly: Will they fail the consumer? At USD $499, while still high, the price doesn't look nearly as intimidating -- especially since the price gap between the higher-end 360 Elite is now down to a mere $20.

Your move, Microsoft...

Price break...? (Score: 1)

That looks an awful lot like a Circuit City ad.

Here's my question. If it's a "retail wide" price change, why would the ad say "$100 price break" and then in small print say "Reg. 599.99" with a big block of black text beside it giving the dates of the advertised prices?

If it's a retail wide price change, shouldn't it just say "Playstation 3: Now $499.99!" instead of saying it's "on sale" from it's regular MSRP of 599.99?

As for whether it will drive sales, I'm sure it will help. I know quite a few people who have been on the fence since they took away the 20gb model at the same price point who will probably jump on this.

However, I'm thinking it's still very far from being accepted widely, even at that price. Yeah, it's only $20 more than the Elite, but Elite X360s can't even be found, let alone bought. It's still $100 more than the premium 360 and unless someone absolutely WANTS Blu-ray (and that's the deciding factor), the 360 still has more going for it than the PS3, even with the price drop.

I'm no Perry Mason, but i agree.that is a CC Ad. it has all the tell tale signs, fonts, color patterns, etc.
but regardless, no $100 price drop is going to make me run out to by the Sony George Foreman....

Another thing that may sweeten the deal is the fact that as of July 1st, you can get 5 free Blu-Ray movies with the purchase of any Blu-Ray player (including the PS3). So, if you're in the market for a HD movie player anyway, it looks like an opportune time to strike. The biggest knock against the PS3 right now is its lack of software (especially compared to the 360), but things will definitely pick up for it in the fall. I still wouldn't buy one over a 360, but as a second machine, it's pretty good. I've had mine for about 2 months, and just now starting to see compelling content on the horizon. I've been using it primarily as a Blu-Ray player, and I've really enjoyed it on that front.

I'm not sure Microsoft should or would follow with a price drop. They are at a pretty good price point now for what that machine offers. The biggest negative on the 360 has been the reliability and that is always remedied with a warranty period which is what they are doing. A long warranty period only costs you repairs for the affected units, while a price drop costs you lost revenue among all units sold (assuming you don't get a big enough increase in sales solely based on the price drop to offset the lost revenue). This extended warranty is the right move for them given where they are at in the market. Sales are still pretty strong. As the content gets better and better, so will sales. As many consoles as Gears of War moved, I'm sure Halo 3 will bring in some incremental sales as well.

As far as the PS3 this will probably convince me to buy one solely for the Blu-Ray and upconverting aspects of it. I've heard the upconversion works pretty well.

Due to the verbiage of the ad and the fact that Sony denies there are any plans to drop the price of the PS3, I'm thinking it's instead going to be a temporary deal from Sony.
