Non-HDMI Xbox 360s to be Phased Out

As if you didn’t feel enough like a beta test Xbox 360 owner when the Elite launched, Microsoft has confirmed that all future 360s will be equipped with an HDMI port.

Speaking to Kotaku, a Microsoft rep confirmed that all 360 models from now on will be receiving the upgrade, and all signs are saying that this will be including those with the lowered prices:

Yes, we are offering an HDMI port for Xbox 360 simply as another choice in Xbox 360 owners’ games and entertainment experience. Retailers are gradually introducing HDMI-enabled Xbox 360s into the channel to meet demand.

So you won’t be going blindly into this, all HDMI equipped models will have an HDMI logo on the box.

My BB warranty is good until 10/08 so I've got some time. If there's any indication the rumored 45nm chips would be available by then I may hold out for those. But if not I can definitely see my unit getting terminally ill when the 65nm chips hit the shelves.

Though anything could happen at any time, I've not had any problems with my 360 since I got it in Dec 2005. And I've got a TV that recognizes 1080p over component (which the 360 fully supports). Based on that and the fact that I've tried my personal visual comparison of HDMI vs Component at 720p and 1080i (courtesy of my DirecTV HD-DVR) with inconclusive results, I think I'm going to bypass running out an getting one just because it has an HDMI port. However, if mine goes belly up in the future, I may splurge to get the cooler running system!

And how does this help out existing owners?? Way to go MS! You continue to frustrate your existing user base time and time again. Why didn't you just add all this stuff at the begninng. Wanted to have the whole smoke/mirrors thing and be the first one out? Why not compete at the same price point as Sony and offer us gamers what we really wanted, HDMI, built-in wireless networking and HD-DVD???

being first and cheap doesn't necessarily make happy customers.

Btw, I have all 3, 360, Wii and PS3 so I'm not trying to play favorites. Microsoft still has a more superior machine, but c'mon. I wanted all of those things and all I got was this t-shirt, albeit, it's not too bad, but still!

Well, it's hardware, so what are they supposed to do when they would like to upgrade? I mean I'd love HDMI. I'd also like to ask VW for a newer car since they have made lots of improvements since 2004, but I don't think they're going to listen also. Ditto with my ancient ipod.

As for the why was it not released immediately? Probably because they came up with a price point and an amount of money they were willing to lose and choose the things they though were most important.

It sucks, but when you buy something there will be something cheaper and better next week. Get used to it or live miserable.

I would like an HDMI port also, but I'm happy to trade all of that for a console that has been out for a year longer, has a lot of great games and a polished online experience.

My PS3 has been a dust collector for games, but it's been great watching Blu Ray movies on it!
