No Wii Online In '07?

by CodeMonkey| Published: Monday, March 05 @ 09:39:34 EST
In a short interview with SNK President, it seems the Wii may not have too many (if any) Wii online titles in 2007...

nintendowiifanboy talked with Ben Herman, who runs SNK Playmore USA, where they mentioned Wii online games:

"Of course, there has to be bad news, and it's kind of big: Herman says that Nintendo is not letting publishers add online functionality to games, VC or retail, and probably will continue this restriction throughout 2007."

Before you let loose the dogs of war, please note that Ben Herman isn't a Nintendo spokesperson so what he says may or may not be Nintendo's final decisions. However, it is good to note that a third party person with no ties to the Nintendo product (besides games) has given his interpretation of the "rules" as set by Nintendo.

Why would Nintendo prevent titles from going "online" this year? Perhaps their online solution is not yet ready or capable of handling the user base? Recall, the Wii was slightly more in demand than even Nintendo could have predicted.

Question remains, will a current-generation console survive without the infamous multi-player aspect? We're sure 2old2play has a big opinion of this given the communities entire focus is to bring gamers together for online play.

if the wii can get online, the fan base in my opinion would blow up.

Seriously I would love to box, play tennis, bowl, etc. with my friends who also have Wiis.

I knew that wasn't going to be a reality, but I was hoping some football game this Fall would let me play my friend out in Cally.

Dang.

I was amped and ready to pick up a Wii recently UNTIL I read that it has no online capability. Soo...with that one simple fact, it went from a Must Buy to a Won't Touch With A 10-Foot Poll.

I sent an email to Nintendo recently telling them about my displeasure with the lack of online capabilites, this was their respons:

"We haven't yet announced the details surrounding our online plans with this system. Once this happens, we'll post the news to our website at www.nintendo.com, so stay tuned."

So, I guess I'll stay tuned...for now.

On topic, how long was the original XBOX out before XBlive was introduced. Perhaps Nintendo IS working on a online solution, and just taking time to get it right....

I hope they address the issue that I have with the DS and that is Nintendo's need to overly protect the end consumer. So far I have been pretty frustrated with the DS's online play, due to the fact that when you play on line you want to communicate with the other players in the game. Nintendo appears to have take steps to make it as safe as can be when venturing online, by only offering canned responses and limit access to converse. And the whole idea behind friend codes blows me away as being cumbersome. The game play works well otherwise and I would love to see the Wii step up to the plate for online play.

you would think that nintendo and sony would acutally see what mircosoft and bungie have done with the multiplayer stuff and try to do something to match it. But i guess not.

I'd think they'd have to lose money. I've yet to see that occur.

Honestly, a lot of those casual gamers sucking up these systems... probably don't care about online play.

If anything, they're consistent. Consistency is good for investment and predictability.

Plus, they're outselling PS3 and such right now, building their audience now. I think they'd do just fine if they get some hot games out this summer, even without networking.

The fact is, 2old2play is highly a networking site, so is it really a surprise gamers would be pissed off about it?

However, we're not the majority of the industry, just the upper crust ;-)

If sales slow down or only buyers dont care about online (like Code said) why should they invest in a costly online system? It does seem they don't want to get involved or just have limited support.

Also pointed out by brainiac is the fact that Nintendo has plenty of dough. They will probably invest in a new project when the Wii begins to decline and software sales bottom-out like the cube did.

There is this common misconception that Nintendo is "hurting."

First, their DS sales are HUGE. On fire! They Wii product is in higher demand than anything right now.

They've got the technology to do remote patches, firmware updates, etc. The system itself is ready to do whatever they want. It's all about when and how and why and all that.

We, as networked gamers, may not understand, but the other 80% of the game industry (those "casual gamers") may not be highly demanding it out of the system.

People knew it wouldn't be ground breaking, nor would release with a networked system that was awesome - yet it continues to be bought by mom's, dads, grandparents, kids, etc.

I've only seen Nintendo dominate ONE aspect of the gaming world and that's the handhelds, they had the idea long before SEGA(now microsoft) or Sony did. and they've lasted, seriously how long did the gameboy last before the DS and the sales held them strong until they took a leap of faith with the N64, granted the cartridge quick load vs. the PS1 & Saturn/dreamcast cd load times were an advantage but graphics wise they were still behind. honestly i only have one thing to say. If the uppers at atari had decided to PUSH the Jaguar instead of scap it due to lower then wanted sales in a quarter, we'd be looking at a totally diffrent ball game. if nintendo isn't going to do online they might as well throw in the towel, and sorry but if i remember correctly you could multiplay on the dreamcast on dailup back in the day. so microsoft got the edge on them all, especially with being able to play with 360 and pc users.

The first multiplayer over console, other than any homebrew idea, was pushed by something called xband. I remember briefly thinking it was a cool idea at the time.
