New Xbox 360 (Zephyr) Dated and Priced!

by tank| Published: Sunday, February 18 @ 15:27:17 EST
Rumors of Zephyr, the new Xbox 360 have returned. Rumors of the past have included blurry pictures, international launch locations, and even a misidentified launch developer unit. This time it’s the retail locations on our own homeland confirming the rumors.

Retailers in the USA are confirming a new SKU for Xbox 360 is now in their systems. It will be available on May 1st for $479.99 USD. While some people here on 2old2play were skeptical that we’d see Zephyr before the holiday season, there were also some other clues that it would land before June. Hints were dropped in the Microsoft earnings report via the drop in units being shipped through the first quarter which 2old2play speculated was to reduce the number of units in the supply chain. Sure enough, Zephyr looks like it’ll be here just before summer.

So what does Zephyr have that we may want? Most of it I’m sure current owners can get along without. First of, this will most likely be the Xbox 360 that comes with the smaller, cooler running processors. These processors are also key to lowering the manufacturing cost of the Xbox 360 which may eventually lead to a price drop. More then likely will also include the DVD Rom found in the latest model Xbox 360’s that run much quieter. If all recent accounts are true, the Zephyr will sport an HDMI port and hopefully for the cost increase, an included cable. HDMI really might not matter to this generation though, most TV’s that have HDMI ports also have DVI ports which you can tie into with the VGA cable and be DRM / HDCP free. However if you really think you need HDMI, it’ll be there.

The last upgrade which is probably the most sought after upgrade is a larger hard drive. Since the Xbox 360’s launch people have been vocal about the small size of the hard drive and Zephyr is said to include a 100 EXTRA Gigs of space. I think we can safely assume that it won’t be long after that we’ll see a stand-alone 120GB hard drive upgrade for current generation Xbox 360 owners to purchase.

With how hard Microsoft tries to squash rumors or Zephyr, they just can’t keep a lid on it. It’s understandable that Microsoft wants retailers (and thus themselves) to sell through the older stock first and confirming a new model could hinder that goal. This news is just simply too big for such a passionate community to keep to themselves. We know it’s coming but Microsoft is still in deny, deny, deny mode.

I realize they're including more in this version, but with the PS3 struggling at $500-600, why in the world would MS phase out the current version and move closer to the Sony price point? And it doesn't even include HD-DVD?

Still, this is good news to those of us who will be in the market for a used 360 in the next year. When you guys start upgrading I'll take leftovers ;)

I kinda think people will pay without too much grumbling. The 360 has the games and support that make it the better option. So far as I can tell Sony's machine isn't selling due to lack of software but I still know plenty of people who hardly even play games that bought one. I laugh at them but it still shows the price point isn't so prohibitive that only the early adopters will buy.

Care to post how to convert DVI to VGA? Remember that TVs are going to be accepting DVI-D (digital) and VGA is an analog signal. So I'm not exactly sure how to convert analog to digital w/o spending a lot of $$.

But if you know how, I'd be happy to learn.

---

I think the new xbox is great. The pricepoint is silly, but the HDMI OOTB and quieter/cooler is great. I'd consider moving my existing xbox (used as Vista MCE front-end and upconverting DVD player) to a backup TV and getting the new xbox.

But I won't pay the premium price for it .. that's just silly.

Most of the time you can just use a cheap converter. DVI isn't necessarily digital, it's also analog. So it depends on your TV. If it'll accept (or internally convert) the analog signal you just need a $5 pinout conversion adapter. If however your DVI is digital only and your TV hasn't got internal ability to do analog to digital, then there's no point in doing it, an analog to digital conversion box will run 200 bucks.

I have been waiting to get a second 360, and this is good news for me.

I am looking forward to the larger HDD drive and the HDMI.
My only question is about the HDMI is this, will it be version 1.3a?

I have looked all over the place and I cannot find any information either way about it. While it would make sense that it would be hdmi version 1.3a, the fact that it doesn't make mention of it bothers me. Specifically, what I like about HDMI is the idea of a one cable solution for everything. However, V1.3a (if memory serves correctly) will pass through Dolby and DTS Lossless surround sound formats. The only way I know how to get them now is if I have a blu-ray or hd-dvd standalone player with the decoders built in. This way using the 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 analog inputs on the back of surround sound receiver to get these formats. Which is alot of cables). Granted, a person must have a surround sound receiver with hdmi 1.3a and the decoders built in to take advantage of it all, and there are not any currently released but we will start to see them roll-out by the end of the year. Sherwood is offering a receiver with hdmi 1.3, lossless audio sometime by the end of the year. Here is a link about it:
http://crave.cnet.com/8301-1_105-9676526-1.html?tag=blog

The xbox 360 hd-dvd is capable of outputting at least the dolby lossless format, however without a decoder built in, there really is no way to experience this improved surround format. I believe that HDMI 1.3a is the only way to do so.

As a home theater buff, I would love to see hdmi 1.3a as an addition to the 360 for these lossless audio formats and for the single cable solution. Imagine, I have a PS3, a 360, and a DVR, all hooked into my receiver via hdmi with 3 cables with one cable going out to the TV. No mess.

BTW I am really looking forward to the bigger HDD as well, but I really think that will be available separately. Also would live quieter dvd drive and cooler running system.

Hmmmmm, we've been debating back and forth about getting a second 360 (I'm for, my husband is against) as my son and I are constantly bugging the other to let us play. It would be nice to be able to play online with him as well, especially as I could monitor better some of the UNO rooms he could end up in.

But I am not sure the new features of the Zephyr will be enough to justify the price point. If I am going to spend the $$ to get a second 360, the bigger HD might be worth it. That would really be the only feature that would sell it for me. But if my son and I each had a HD to ourselves, we might not need it.

I think it is going to be a wait and see kind of thing. If the price would drop, I could hold out until the end of summer.

Thing was at the start MS had a hell of a lot of bad publicity due to the faults and they stilldo and then to top it all off they were challenged by watchdog regarding this the other week.

MS keep saying that they dont have that many faults even to them yet they are not providing figures.

I just hope they sort this out for this 360 as well or you will all be mighty pissed paying for your original 360 to be faulty then this one to do the same and you have ha PS3 for a fraction of the price.
