New Next-Gen control system in the works

by TANK| Published: Friday, October 20 @ 13:25:14 EDT
Wii like game control will soon be coming to Playstation 3, Xbox360 and Games for Windows. UK peripherals specialists In2Games has developed a universal control system that's actually better than the Wii's setup.

This new control system is called Gametrak Fusion which will use ultrasonic and radio frequency technology to track controller motion. This system includes a small base unit which goes on the floor in front of the player. Each handset will have an accelerometer embedded in it which is one of the pieces that help track position and orientation.

In2Games says the pieces of their system make it more accurate, flexible and more responsive than the Wii's sensor bar system. Since Gametrak Fusion is all radio frequency, the system isn't affected by lighting and it offers a better range.

Company Managing Director, Elliot Myers gave a demo of Gametrak Fusion with their tennis title to compare it to the Wii's tennis game. The game controlled better and there was detection on top spin and slice hitting. The combination of embedded accelerometer and ultrasonic technology means the game can track the any type or speed of swing, where the player is on the court, the angle of the racket as it hits the ball and the exact arc of the swing for ball trajectory.

In2Games plans on releasing 20 games for their control system spread out over a four year time period. Most of the titles planned so far are sports games including tennis, baseball and golf each will be bundled with the necessary add-on accessory piece. For example a golf game would come with a golf club head piece that attaches to the controller's handset. The system isn't limited to just sports games though, a gun accessory could easily be made for shooters for example.

This all sounds like it will be very expensive but the price is expected to be around USD $60 That's just a bit more than you're paying for a standard wireless Xbox360 controller today. So when can you get one? Right now In2Games is saying their control system will be available around summer/fall of 2007.

Honestly… a racket that acts like a real one and puts top-spin, etc? In my opinion all of these motion sensing controllers, paddles, rackets, bats, fishing poles, etc is getting ridiculous.

1) If you want to simulate a sport that bad, why not just go out and do the real thing?

2) If I do want to simulate tennis, football, etc, where do they expect me to have enough room to play… the garage?

I guess everyone forgot about the “next great thing” called Virtual Reality (glooves and goggles) back in 1991. What ever happened to just keeping it simple? You know... a nice comfy controller, Lazy-boy recliner, HDTV, and a cold beverage to my right.

Don’t forget about the new “FIFA Goal Adaptor” coming soon for $49.99, haha! Imagine… setting up a real goal and net in your living room, which of course has sensors in the net to detect when you score!

However, this would be met with the inevitable “mom always said don’t play ball in the house” comment from the wife.

I'm predicting much suckage while the game companies figure out what works and what doesn't. I think a lot of things will sound good on paper but will just be irritating after 40 hours of gameplay.

Perhaps MS will license this technology for the 360 (or 720, who knows) so that they're on the same path as the competition. Might not, wouldn't hurt them to sit back on the sidelines and see if gamers as a general whole have any interest in waving their arms around while playing video games or if it's just a novelty that will fade in time. Or they could just do what they do best and buy out the technology so that no one else can use it and they're on the cutting edge of full motion gaming. Something to ponder, I suppose.

If it'll make some money MS will be there. I think that anytime we as gamers get more options it's a good thing though.
