New DRM for Downloads on Xbox 360?

by doodirock| Published: Tuesday, October 31 @ 14:34:08 EST
A couple of members have notice a new addition to their 360's since the update this morning. Media is now tagged with a "Does not expire" message. Obviously this could only mean one thing, DRM for downloads.

Our best guess is that new media downloads will now contain expiration's dates after they hit your hard drive from the market place. This means you wont be able to continue playing that same demo over and over again without finally going out to buy the game. It's a smart more for MS to help aid in the purchase of games after they are pimped on the Marketplace. It is also a win for magazines like OXM, who rely on demos to boost their own magazine sales with promises of exclusive demos. Now these demos could be considered more valuable since the content on the disc can not be deleted.

This could also be an indication of things to come for the Marketplace. It would make perfect sense to enable this feature for future downloads of music, TV, and movies as well. Most journalists know that the 360 would be a perfect platform for delivering more then just gaming content, and with the Sony PS3 around the corner this could be a first move into the entertainment download arena. I suppose only time will tell.

Bad - removing stuff on a set time (DEMOS.. this would suck)

Good - Using it and the autodownloader to remove older videos/content while downloading new content/videos as a marketing campaign

I agree the Gates Foundation does amazing things but it is not the same entity as Microsoft and it shouldn't be used to cast good light on the software company. I realise that there is a connection due to the funds raised and the people involved between the two organisations but microsoft has changed a lot and Bill can't really be seen as the main man anymore, there are many others in charge now. Microsoft have done great things for the world but they do have a lot to answer for also in terms of monopolising and crippling once-competitive areas of industry, terrible security within its products and numerous other things that dont need to be discussed here.

So anyway :) , I think if this new functionality is used to remove content after a certain time then that is a negative move for the consumer and one I am unhappy about. If they are going to let me download a demo, I want to decide when I remove it. I don't need it to be removed just to force me to make a purchase. I'll make that purchase anyway if I like the product and I'll resent my demo being taken away from me if that happens too. my .02 :)

If they wanted to put expiration dates on the demos. As long as the full game was available by the time it expired. I've been playing the hell out of the Tony Hawk demo. I obviously know by now if I want to buy it. But if it expired before the game came out, I'd be pretty pissed.

but i have been known to have kept a few for longer then a week, especcially if it was multiplayer. in a way it dont care because i have OXM subscription and when/ if a demo is on the disc when i get it i take it off my HD anyway (in the case of that "Cold planet" game or whatever its called) i had that cold game on my HD forever it would still be there if i didnt have the demo.

which leads me to the fact that in many ways i DO care, if i take the time to DL something i dont want it to have some sort of window on it (unless its like games Phantasy Star). Most Demos only have a set lvl or feature available or a time limit anyways.. you play it enough and fall in love your going to want to get it.

i played the BFME and Battlefront :MC online ALOT, and i mean ALOT, ill be pissed if i decide not to get/renew my OXM sub and DL a hot Demo, only to have it be obsolete in a week. in my eyes IM A GOLD MEMBER, WTF AM I PAYING FOR? FOR THEM TO TAKE SH*T AWAY?

which leaves me with my final thought, i think it will only be aplicable for silver accounts and MMO type demos. i really hope they dont plan on actually taking away from XBL gold subscribers, that would just make NO sense.

XBL is much more than free demos. Live allows you to get twice as much for your money with almost all games. Before I had live it obviously was single player games all the time. I never knew how much more there was to games until I got Live and indulged in multiplayer matches.

Silver members don't get to venture into MP territory. Also, for me, most demos are a fifteen minute experience. I play the one level they open up for you. If it sucks, I delete it. If it's good, I'll rent or buy it.

I've heard that the 360 may soon move into the area of "On demand" movie rentals. The expire feature would allow you to rent the video and watch it as much as you want for 24 or 48 hours, however long they choose. You can see that this is leading up to much more.

How about this scenario:
1. Download a demo (for example, the new tony hawk)
2. You play the demo and like it, but still are not sure whether you want to buy.
3. Your demo expires.
4. MS begins a game "rental" system that can be downloaded.
5. You "rent" the game and like it.
6. It expires after 24 hours.
7. Now you're hooked and don't want to pay $6 ten more times to play the game, so you go and buy it.

MS gets you to demo the game and does not allow you to play the same level over and over until you're tired of it. They then make money on the rental, and then make money on the retail purchase.

I know it's a little over the top, but I can see it happening in the future. And, by the way, I don't have a problem with expiring demos. We should be happy that they give us demos of almost every new game for free. Remember in the dark ages where you would pay money to rent a game, bring it home, and it sucked? You were out four or five bucks and played a game for all of ten minutes.

Why whine about free content?
