NFS: Carbon Downloads Your Cash!

by TANK| Published: Thursday, November 02 @ 12:00:01 EST
EA has released the follow up game to the Need For Speed Launch title with Need for Speed Carbon. With it comes more downloadable content then you can shake a wallet at. EA, with it's nickel and dimeing ways, has followed many other holiday releases and is offering a regular and a collectors edition. The regular edition is the standard $59.99 price you'd expect and the collectors is $69.99 which is in line with what we've seen from other companies. Their collectors edition is actually a bit better in content than what we've seen from others offering three new cars, ten specially tuned cars, six new races, ten exclusive vinyl kits and a bonus DVD with behind the scenes making of footage. So in terms of value for the collectors, 'Carbon' actually brings some real goods to the table which we don't normally see in special/collectors editions.

That's where the value ends though. EA has just released 11 new pieces of content via Xbox Live Marketplace, none of them free. These extra pieces of content will run you 3780 Microsoft Points or ~$50 bucks additional. That brings the total cost of 'Carbon' to $110-$120 depending on which retail edition you already shelled out for. Not unlike Tiger Woods 2007, much of this content can also be unlocked if you play through the entire game, although we don't think it sends a great message to just allow people to buy their way through.

Considering how quickly the DLC came out after the release, this content serves as a quick and easy post-release money maker. It appears that Marketplace is turning into what the most pessimistic people had predicted it would and EA is leading the charge. Is an EA game worth $120 ? Considering how non-next gen their games typically are, how many bugs usually plague them, and their online gaming experience is some of the worst in the industry, who's paying $120 for an EA game? Not I said the older gamer!

What's next for EA? 10 Microsoft Points to fill your car up with gas at the 'Carbon' gas station? Much of what EA has released in this first year has been less then stellar to the gamers out there. They're going to need to win back quite a few customers next year and forcing this many "micro payments" doesn't seem like the right move. After all, is $50 really that micro? Hey EA, instead of nickel and dimeing the gamers you still have left as fans, why not head back to the basics and release high quality next gen games that work? That'll bring gamers back and increase your revenue streams without the need for micro payments on downloadable driving gloves.

I do not believe the Marketplace was invented for companies to rape the consumer for extra content that totals almost the price of the game itself. I would hope that Microsoft will step in and let the game makers know this service is not a tool to squeeze every last dollar out of the consumer.

With the clever wording, is the DLC all really attainable in game? As per Major Nelson's blog: "Many of the items in this bundle can be achieved without purchase by progressing through Career, Challenge Series and Reward Card." The key word for me is "MANY".

EA has done this already with Tiger Woods 2007, but the content released online was fully accessible with enough progress in the game. It was basically equivalent to a cheat code. To me, that is fine and dandy. However, if "MANY" really turns out to be some content not found in the game, then I'm am truly disappointed.

First off, let’s make the assumption that EA is in the gamers’ corner, and the DLC is actually available in-game. What message is EA sending about the game?? To me, it says that they think the game is such a Piece Of Shit that the consumer is willing to spend even more money so that they don’t have to sit through the experience of it. If that is the case, and they know they have a horrible game, why spend all the money in the development process in the first place??

Under this same assumption, how utterly insane is the consumer. They are spending money on a product, then spending even more money so they don’t have to experience it!! Why not save your $100 and not buy the game if you don’t want to play it. You would be better off just lighting your money on fire. You have that much money?? Could you give it to me??

Now let’s assume that the DLC is not available in-game, and it is like a cheat code. A lot of parallels could be made with gold-purchasing in the MMORPG genre (minus the game-world economy issues). The only exception being that you don’t have to go to a third party; instead you go directly to EA. For so long, game developers have argued against gold-farmers, I’m sure most of those arguments would be valid in this case as well. What’s next?? Instead of Blizzard banning gold-farmers, they will just raise your monthly subscription and give you the best Two Handed Axe of Striking +12 when you first log in.

Remember cheat codes? I remember the days where I could choose to unlock stuff by playing through the game OR by inputting a cheat code. That didn't cost me any extra money.

Hey, I'm all about choice - I believe that you should have a choice on whether you want to earn something the hard way or take the easy way out. But you know what, I should have that choice already built into the freakin' $60 game!

Cheat codes gave us the ability to choose how we wanted to play our games in the previous console generations. Let's not change the rules, especially after increasing the price that we pay for the game. I don't mind spending an extra $10 on a great game, but let's be fair and build choice into the game. Just imagine how you would feel if Nintendo decided to charge for the 30 live cheat code in Contra for the Virtual Console.

Extra content - charge away; if it's worth it, people will buy it. But charging for unlockables already built into the game - EA, stop and look what you're doing...

I am sorry, I do like to cheat in games, sometimes it gives you the ability to get places you other wise couldn't in a game sometimes its just to beat it, microsoft already has a problem with a game enhancing or cheat device as there aren't any around for either the 360 or xbox yet, but I believe this is a great way for ea to benefit, at a cost that is reasonable if you want it, well I didn't really go over the point value but I just mean the system behind buying stuff, instead of spending time unlocking it.

These micro-transactions that EA has built into the are cheat codes that are already built into the game, we just now have to pay for them and have them send the unlock code to our console rather than being activated via traditional button combos.

I still feel like people should have the option to unlock the cheats in the single player portions of their games without buying anything extra. We didn't have to do it in the last generation, so why should we start now?

I may be wrong but I played a lot of tiger woods games before and unless you had a game enhancer you could not actually input these codes with a combo of buttons. I do agree it is frustrating from one pov, but its an option, you can play the game if you want the content or you can buy it out right. Now I know the godfather did get flack for there cheat code based content, but again it is a choice on thisand all you have to do is not buy it. By the way I also understand your point. im all for extra content extending the life of a game, after i put 300-400 hours in a game its refreshing to have an "expansion pack" or really good "extra content" come along...within reason.

i say this because as i see it "extra content" has been half as expensive as an "expansionpack" in a game while giving out 1/10 the actual content. this may be good for some, but most of this is already in the game, most of this is programmed and thought of pre production and deliberatly marketed at outragous prices (and i do mean outragous). Case in point: "Chromehounds" DLC was predetermined and i had info on it before any of it was released.. the game cost me 10$ more then a "past gen" game (is this achievement fee or next gen-like quasigraphix fee?) at POS.. then if i would like all the content in the game (that has already been made) i now must spend another 20$ or so.... i ended up spending about $5, wasnt impressed.

i understand how this works ppl dont get me wrong, i know i also have a choice to NOT get the items that i dont have.. but i cant stop myself from WANTING these things. also please dont tell me that 1.50 is cheap, i know it is.. but you add up enough of these and your looking at upwards of paying 80-90 dollars for some games, if this is so "inexpensive" then would you buy a game that expensive? that had "extra" content from the regular for 50? i know some of you would, and EA knows this.

confused wife: "*some*? what does that mean?"

equaly confused me: "well i dont know but it could be that some of these are in the game with one or two maybe that are not?.. or that they all are in the game and this is just for ppl that dont want to play the game to unlock them"

Wife looks at me like im crazy: "so your saying that either 1. you get maybe 1-2-3-4 or however many cars for $5 each or 2. its in the game and some ppl dont want to play the game.. even though they bought it and instead they just want to spend another 40-50 bucks just so they dont have to play it to get it?"..... *rolls her eyes*

How do we stop EA from digging even deeper into our wallets like this? Simple, DO NOT BUY THE FREAKING CONTENT! If they don't make money on this, the next versions of their games will not have this, plain and simple.

Will that happen? Will people NOT buy this content? Sadly I don't think so. There are too many retards out there that will bend over, grab their ankles and say "go ahead EA, give it to me. Oh and my wallet is in my right pocket while yer back there".
