My Credit Card is on Xbox Live!

by SgtPayback| Published: Sunday, February 18 @ 14:40:59 EST
So I happened to check out my billing information today and I noticed that there was a credit card listed as a payment source. My current Gold subscription for Xbox Live was bought with a 12 month pre-paid card so the listing of my credit card had me a little confused. After thinking about it, I remembered that I once used my credit card to buy some Microsoft points. However, I didn’t like the fact that it was even listed in my billing information so I tried to find a way to remove it. I checked every possible option on the web page but there was no way to remove it. So I called customer support.

After speaking with both a customer service rep and a manager, I was informed that there is no way to remove this card from my account. Apparently if you use any type of payment source (credit card, debit, etc) it will automatically become tied to your account… indefinitely! This also means that when my 12 month subscription runs out, it will try and automatically renew using…. you guessed it, that lone credit card that is tied to my account. The only thing the manager could do for me was to disable the auto renewal so that my card won’t be charged. The manager did state that you can “stack” prepaid cards on your account so that when one runs out, the next one will automatically kick in and therefore the credit card would not be charged.

The point here is that if you have ever used any credit card to purchase items via Xbox Live (marketplace), then those credit cards will be automatically setup to your account as potential “payment sources” for the Xbox Live automatic renewal process (which is enabled by default). If you do not want to have your account set to an automatic renewal process, you will need to call Xbox directly and have them disable it.

Even with the pre-paid cards, don't they require a credit card number. This can serve two purposes: 1) It's convenient for both you and them to extend your subscription and 2) it prevents unauthorized users (kids).

They give you plenty of warning that your account will expire. It's not like they are trying to trick you.

I share your concern.

That's why I often use Discover card for online purchases because their Deskshop program creates a single use number. Buy with that number & it can't be used again. Check around, your credit card issuer may offer a similar service.

They've never charged my card because i've always got a renewal card code to punch in. You can buy one on amazon for 35 or 39 bucks, type it into your account and it'll be activated when your current sub ends. Stacking works. But still pretty crappy policy with credit cards. I"m sure they've got mine somehow, probalby buying microsoft points like you.

I have had a few credit cards expire and Xbox live still shows those cards on my account. Now I have four credit cards listed on my account with no way to remove the expired ones!

This has always been the case... MS Online services still has cards on file from when I played Asheron's Call 1 and 2 (before the games were sold back to Turbine). Not that those cards are active anymore.

Its actually a fairly common practice with online vendors and a good reason not to use a debit card online.

Another reason to have a credit card number tied to your XBL account is to make it possible to use the market place. It's smart, and almost any service you use a credit card for online retains that card info for future transactions. Amazon has one click ordering, as an example.

I agree with many of your comments, however what I don't like is that fact that I cannot remove the payment source if I choose to do so.

As for prepaid cards, you do not need to have a credit card. That was the policy on the original Xbox, but not with the 360.

I guess i don't see what the big deal is here? As someone else pointed out, this is pretty common. If you are worried about being 'auto billed' MS was extremely forth coming when my 12 months was coming. I received several email warnings letting me know that it was about to automatically re-subscribe.

If you're worried that someone may take your info and use it I say so what, that's why credit card companies have fraud protection and they take care of it for you. Also I've seen statistics that state it happens much less online then we think and much more off line (i.e. in RL).

Anyway, MS is no worse than any other company... at least so far.

There is a way to remove your credit card info.
The credit card is tied to your .net passport. You need to sign on to Microsoft's passport site . Select accout services. On the account summary page go to billing. Here you will see a list of all the credit cards on file. Now select Go to personal information. At the bottom of the page will be a list of all active accounts. There should be an option to remove the credit card. If there is not then you need to click on edit for the credit card. On the credit card status select use a different payment method. Now select the credit card you would like to remain active as the recipient of the service transfer; click next. Confirm the transfer and you have removed the credit card.
The site is https://accountservices.passport.net/ppnetworkhome.srf?vv=450&lc=1033

You should be able to remove the card a source. M$ likes to make it easy to spend money on Live. If M$ would like to start paying my credit card bill they can't store the number where ever they want...until then...I want it removed.

That with all the recent legilsation in the past 10 or so years (Consumer Credit Protection Act, Graham Leach Bliley, etc.) to protect consumers that this practice shouldn't be used. Sure, if you want them to keep your informaiton for convenience fine let them keep it; but if you want to sever your relationship with them they keep it anyway? I tried looking up some of the legislation online...but then I got hungry. I guess you can always cancel the card...that will show 'em! Power to the people!

Well, when you put the credit card on the account, its not like your doing it directly from the item page that are buying. You actually have to go to the page where you buy new subscriptions to Xbox live and stuff like that and add it there. So really its not a credit card your putting specifically to buy that item, to microsoft its just an overall credit card since they cannot know what item you plan on buying. Now if you added your credit card information on the page where you actually buy the item it would be a different story.

Either way, its still good to know that your credit card goes for the entire xbox, so anyone out there who plans on buying something on your xbox 360 just be careful there to know that it stays on your xbox 360.

This has been a small nightmare for me. I am a parent of a 9 year old child who purchased over $800 worth of points w/o my knowledge. I was unaware that the credit card numbers are stored and no way to delete the information. If it werent for my older son discovering this through his email confirmation, I am sure it would have been more.

Xbox live people were not helpful in the least bit. Their olny suggestion at that time was to cancel all my credit cards and get new numbers. They wouldnt refund my money for unused point. 6 months later my son earns back his xbox, the husband unknowingly plugs him in online and he manages to run up a $240 bill in a matter of 45 minutes before he is discovered and stopped. I called xbox and canceled the accounts immediataly. 7 days later I get a renewal subscription on my credit card. They tell me that there is once again no way to refund my money, I purchased this 3 month subscription. I explained that I canceled it the day after it was purchased and the renewal should not have gone through. She kept trying to feed me some kind of bull crap and twisting her words like I was a 3 year old. She kept repeating that I purchased this and that is why there is a charge on my credit card. Out of pure frustration of not getting through to this decietfully trained xbox 360 live support..I hung up. I then called the credit card company and charged back. They will rip you off, I cant be the only parent unaware of how this xbox live machine works .
