Microsoft to Cover All General Hardware Failure for 3 years!

by doodirock| Published: Thursday, July 05 @ 17:50:47 EDT

Big news from Microsoft this afternoon as MS has announce it will expand its global Xbox 360™ warranty coverage to include all "Xbox 360 customer who experiences a general hardware failure indicated by three flashing red lights for 3 years.

This comes on the heals recent news about Microsoft and it's lack of acknowledgment for the growing number of failing Xbox 360s. Many believe the failures are due to poor heat management within the console which should be helped by newer smaller chips due out in the near future.

At least now, current customers can rest assured that their consoles will be safely protected by this new warranty. Under the new policy owners who have already paid for xbox repairs will be entitled to compensations for past fee's from out of warranty repair. I know I should be seeing a check in the mail.

In any case this warranty shows Microsofts knowledge of the problem and proves they are working on a solution for current Xbox 360 owners. Nice work MS.

Press Release Below

REDMOND, Wash. — July 5, 2007 —Microsoft Corp. today announced that it will expand its global Xbox 360™ warranty coverage. Any Xbox 360 customer who experiences a general hardware failure indicated by three flashing red lights will now be covered by a three year warranty from date of purchase. All other existing Xbox 360 warranty policies remain in place. As a result of what Microsoft views as an unacceptable number of repairs to Xbox 360 consoles, the company conducted extensive investigations into potential sources of general hardware failures. Having identified a number of factors which can cause general hardware failures indicated by three red flashing lights on the console, Microsoft has made improvements to the console and is enhancing its Xbox 360 warranty policy for existing and new customers.

Microsoft stands behind its products and is taking responsibility to repair or replace any Xbox 360 console that experiences the “three flashing red lights” error message within three years from time of purchase free of charge, including shipping costs. Microsoft will take a $1.05 billion to $1.15 billion pre-tax charge to earnings for the quarter ended June 30, 2007 for anticipated costs under its current and enhanced Xbox 360 policies.

“The majority of Xbox 360 owners are having a great experience with their console and have from day one. But, this problem has caused frustration for some of our customers and for that, we sincerely apologize,” said Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft’s Entertainment & Devices Division. “We value our community tremendously and look at this as an investment in our customer base. We look forward to great things to come.”

For any customer who has previously paid for repair expenses related to the three flashing lights error message on the Xbox 360 console, Microsoft will retroactively reimburse them.

At 2:30 p.m. PDT today, Microsoft will hold a teleconference for financial analysts and investors with Robbie Bach, president of Entertainment and Devices, Chris Liddell, senior vice president and chief financial officer, and Frank Brod, corporate vice president and chief accounting officer to discuss today’s announcement. To participate, U.S. residents can dial +1-888-459-9165, and those outside the United States can dial +1-773-799-3324. The passcode is MSFT. The call will be available for playback beginning approximately one hour after the conclusion of the call through 5 p.m. PDT on Thursday, July 12. To access the playback, U.S. residents can dial +1-866-363-4143, and those outside the United States can dial +1-203-369-0210. An audio webcast of the conference call will also be made available at the Investor Relations site at http://www.microsoft.com/msft.

Xbox 360 customers with questions should visit www.xbox.com.

Update: We just put a call into 1800-4myxbox and they didn't know anything about the recent upgrade in warranties. We were told to "call back in a couple of days and we should have our system updated." When we quoted the press release we were told, "wow, that's news to us."

This is the kind of thing that eases my concerns about buying a 360. Knowing that I'm basically covered for 3 years is definitely an encouragement for me to spend the $400 to buy this console. I'm betting other consumers with concerns will feel the same.

I sent mine back a few weeks back (they sent me another one) for one red light, which I never figured out what the problem was. So if it is something other than 3 red lights they don't cover? You better believe I would argue that point. If it's bricked, it's bricked.

Even if the 360's repair rate was close to reasonable, M$ had to respond to the recent bad reports since Forza 2 was released. The internet news is exploding on this issue and it has gained a life of it's own whether it is deserved or not. It's feeding off itself now.

M$ is ramping up for possibly the biggest sales numbers for the 360 since it's initial launch. We are less than three months away from possibly the largest release of any video game (Halo 3) in history and many people are still waiting for that game before buying a 360. I imagine the numbers are huge.

M$ wants to drown the internet fires and inspire confidence in their product through warranty enhancements. It should work. My God! Three years warranty for a product type whose technological service life is usually only four to five years. Hell yeah, I'm buying!

Well, I've already got one and it has worked well for 1.5 years. So I won't actually be buying another one yet. But I've got another 1.5 years of warranty to go now. Yeeee Hawwww!

I wonder if they will take it upon themselves to reimburse old charges or will they force the customer to contact them and prove the charge. I suppose they would need to make the customer respond to them in order to avoid fraud, but I also doubt they'll make it easy to find that info as well.

I sent my first unit back last week for repair/replacement. This was after having the 360 for a year and four months.
At least Microsoft is acknowledging that there is a problem, and is being proactive about correcting it. Still, it kind of sucks knowing full well that you will be getting a second and quite possibly a third box over the next couple of years.

I've never seen a console sell so well despite the fact that many people are aware that it could fail at any time.

this is great and all, but what about those of us who regularly purchase the MS Warranty? they should refund that back to those of us who had already added 2 years to our machines. My launch machine is warrantied to 2009 already.... my newest one, I hadn't bought the added warranties yet due to the free 1 yr they started last year.
Either way, this is good news, whether it comes off as some kind of admission of guilt of some sort or whatever.

One of the biggest marketing mistakes that M$ made with the 360 was to give the 360 the four red fault lights. It has made their life miserable. Any previous game console just sat there and looked perfectly fine while it was perfectly broken. A thousand pictures could be taken and no story would be told that would have as big an impact as one with the red rings. For the 360, a story is told with one easily taken and published photo.

I wouldn’t afford a PS3. Does it have faults lights from Hell? I’m guessing, No.
