Microsoft Says 120GB Is Worth The Money

by CodeMonkey| Published: Wednesday, April 04 @ 18:11:12 EDT
Microsoft's product manager, Aaron Greenberg, says the 120GB hard disk is well within reason for pricing...

Many gamers are saying "I can get a 120GB hard drive at [insert store here] for have this price!" Microsoft is arguing that gamers are talking about traditional hard disks, not laptop hard drives like the one in the Xbox 360.

"We know it is expensive and we have definitely heard that feedback but it is a little apples and oranges to compare it to internal PC hard drives because those are off the shelf drives that you have to install yourself. There is a lot of work there for your average consumer it is not a plug in and play experience for them"

Greenberg goes on to say "a 120 gig self-powered external PC drive and in that case we are seeing those retail at anywhere from $160 to $200 for comparable laptop sized external hard drives." So...lets crack open a few sites and compare...

Here are a few I see on froogle.google.com:

  • Seagate ST9120821A Momentus 120GB Laptop Hard Drive: USD $98.95
  • 120GB Laptop Hard Drive Sony Vaio PCG F680: $109.99
  • 120GB Laptop Hard Drive Apple IBook (All Models): $104.99
These are just from the first page and a half. So, what exactly does this Microsoft laptop do that's so much more expensive? Apparently the external nature of the drive is worth USD $70.00 or more? I can get Cavalry 120GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive for Laptops at Wal-Mart for USD $129.98 and a Seagate 120GB 2.5" External Hard Drive at another online store for $120.33.

The real problem? The proprietary plug allows Microsoft to charge a USD $50.00 premium on every "laptop drive." What do you think? We getting ripped off?

It's not really the shell plug because inside the housing is a standard laptop to 360 converter for lack of a better term.

What you're buying is the Xbox360 File System which so far can't be replicated by even hackers yet. All the 360 hard drives are formatted already and they all perform within a certain spec range. Where as off the shelf laptop drives don't.

So ya their drive is expensive, but it's not insanely expensive. People need to just ask themselves do they really need it. You've been getting along with a 20gb drive for a year now, do you really need 120gigs?

I mean, what you're saying is that you're buying the technology. Isn't that the same technology used in the 20GB disk? So...it costs more for something they already created a few years back? I don't buy it :)

You're buying some technology, sure, but file systems are not part of drives, they're part of the system that formats them.

That'd be like saying a FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, EXT3, EXT2 and Mac file systems (ext3?) would all be varying costs because of the varying complexities in the format....

Want It? Yeah, I do!

Need It? Hell no I don't!

If I could move data from my 360 drive to my pc I'd be a happy camper, but in the mean time I can't part with $200 for a bigger HD.

BUT, there may be some out there that download a ton of movies/shows who would like the extra space, so I could see them needing one.

The price is what it is. What else do you expect from M$? At least I didn't have to pay $600 for my 360 like Sony did to diehard PS3'ers.

Tank is right, you are paying for the process to create the encrypted partition and for the cable/software to transfer from your 20gig hdd.

It is a little expensive, but not that much.

The big question is can you sell your current 360 and get an Elite for less than the cost of the 120gig hdd?

Here's the part I don't get. When ppl were discussing their reasons for going with the Premium 360 purchase, most were heard rationalizing their purchase choice by saying "It's a $100 for the hard drive and you get wireless capabilities for free."

So, ppl were perfectly fine w/ already spending $100 on 20 gigs, but then offer 6x the amount of storage for $80 more and it's outrageous?! Ppl need to stop blaming others for their consumer mistakes.

I think it would be a mistake to say that people were okay paying 100.00 difference between the core an preimium system for a 20G hard drive. The 20G hard drive was only a small part of the difference for the 100.00. You also got a wireless controller about a 20.00 difference. The Composite cable allowing HDTV. 40.00 and a 20.00 headset. That means you paid $20.00 for the 20 G HD and that is nothing to complain about. Now they want you to pay 180.00 for and additional 100G. thats 499.00 + 180.00= 679.00 you could spend the 599.00 and get the PS3 with a 60 gig and Blue Ray HD player. To get similar with Xbox then you have to spend 499.00 + 199.00 for HDdvd + 180.00 for the larger HD So going that route it is 880.00 to get the similar options as the PS3. Don't get me wrong I like my 360. I am just not stupid enought to fall for there peace by peace purchasing system. It cost more but you only see it in small amounts so it seems cheaper. The nice part of the mIcrosoft way is you only have to buy what you want and leave the rest.

I agree with everything that you said. I just wanted to add that microsoft is punishing early adopters by pricing the hard drive so high. I know you've got to make some money, but why not reward me for choosing your console by letting me use any hard drive I want. They also should have had more forward thinking and put a removeable card slot in for future expansion. And it was a no-brainer for me to get the premium for all the reasons you listed plus the memory card is $40. I felt like for another $60 I could get everything else plus the extra storage. For some games you really do need the hard drive.

120gb @ $180 = $1.50/gb

So, if you go by your numbers and again, there are points I have issue w/ and they can be a PM if you'd like, it's not the highway robbery that everyone is crying about.

If you use my numbers (and since my OP's intention was to point out fucked up consumer rationalizations) the pricing looks like a SCREAMING DEAL. But here's the best part, I think: I'm not getting one...too much money (even @ $120 using your 20gb for $20 math) to spend on something I don't need!

His statement is too generic, since the HD picture (through HDMI) you see isn't so much a function of the 360, but of the television you watch it on. I have a Samsung DLP and the difference between the component and HDMI is very noticeable. I'm very skeptical about the claims of one input being better than another, but when I switched from component to DVI (hdmi) on my set, it was an eye opening moment. I was shocked. This is an issue with a lot of fixed pixel displays.

Now the 360 HD picture is very good on my Samsung 50" DLP ( I wouldn't complain), but there is a difference that even my wife (my "in house" normal person) can see. Watch an HD DVD versus a Blu-Ray on my PS3, and it will make a believer out of anyone.

I won't be running out to purchase an elite, but I wish I would have had the option for HDMI. If you pay the big bucks for and HD set, it would be nice to operate at optimal settings.

And I hate to whine because they are giving you a lot for the money with the Elite. If I had waited, I would probably buy one(the Elite),but I didn't so I won't. Just saying customers should be offered a viable option to upgrade without spending a fortune. And 180 bucks is too much to spend for the drive alone just as 100 bucks is too much for the 20gig. You can't even transfer your data to the new machine if you upgrade! What kind of B.S. is that? Is it my fault for not waiting? Yes. Should MS take advantage of that? No.
