Microsoft Releases DRM Tool

by codemonkey| Published: Friday, June 27 @ 16:26:05 EDT

Nobody thinks about the content on their Xbox 360 hard drive until they have a system roast with red rings of death or other ill manner and you ask the question “how do I transfer my data.”

However, with Xbox 360 dying left and right in most homes the problem does become a critical issue right quick and Microsoft now has a tool to solve most of your woes. It has some draw backs, but it’s much better than having no solution at all.

The “nice and quick” method will get your licensed transferred, but they don’t really mention the time consuming effort of pulling down all your old games yet again. If you’re a heavy downloader, you’re “nice and quick” download is going to be dragging and slow. If, however, you only have a few things downloaded this shouldn’t be so bad.

They said movie licenses won’t transfer so watch them first before upgrading to your new console… unless your console is dead on the floor crying. Then your SOL.

The only thing that you need for re-downloads is your download history from the marketplace blade.

The sucky thing about that one is that there's no way to break it down by categories. Maybe the Download History just needs a twist interface of it's own.

The DRM issue is the main reason I've never downloaded full versions of games from the Marketplace. Maybe it's that I'm Canadian and breed to have a strong hate for DRM-content, but if I've paid for it once I should be allowed to transfer it and use it again on any other 360 console I own, now or in the future.

Now I can go download a few games to play =D

So does that mean you have to "re-download" the music, maps... or does it just give you a new license for the new 360?
Or is this if you don't use your old HD from the trashed 360?
