Microsoft On The Move While Sony Continues to Flounder

by SgtPayback| Published: Monday, July 14 @ 17:53:13 EDT

It has been over a year and a half since Sony unveiled PlayStation Home at the 2007 Game Developers Conference. However, since that time they have delayed the schedule twice and Home is still in beta testing only..

Meanwhile at E3 2008, Microsoft today unveiled their new features for the upcoming Fall update on the Xbox 360. The big changes are a completely new dashboard and Netflix streaming capabilities. The new dashboard will include fancy new Mii-like 3D Avatars, a new emphasis on community with IM, video chat, and photo sharing, along with a brand new 3D slide interface for the main dashboard screen.

Avatars will be integrated into your GamerCard, but you can also create a "Live party" and invite your friends, with as many as eight of your three dimensional homies hanging out at once. It sounds like Microsoft is taking cues from the Wii, Sony's Home and Facebook all in one fell swoop, not bad at all. The difference of course though, is that Microsoft will actually deliver the goods later this year while Sony continues to postpone the Home release with no release date in site.

Having worked at Sony as a Creative Designer two years ago, it doesn’t surprise me that they have still yet to release Home. While there, I was working on their Station Launcher application which was supposed to be released in late 2006. However, the Launcher app is still only in Beta to this day. The problem for Sony is that they simply aren’t a very good software company and in today’s world of software driven products, they are getting their clocks cleaned by Microsoft. With Microsoft’s price cut on the Xbox 360 and their continuing progress on the software front, Sony can only dream of what “could have been” at this point.

* Update: Play from hard drive - I completely forgot to mention that you will be able to copy your games from the game disc and play directly from the hard drive. Not only will the drive not spin, but load times are quicker, as well. Of course, you will still need the disc in the tray to prove you own the game. This is great news!

Yes, Microsoft is a software company and the software on the Xbox is awesome. But to just use Home as an example is not fair. The firmware updates for the PS3 have been including some big things. Granted they are rip off features they need in order to try to catch up. The last firmware update added trophies (achievements) and in game xmb (something they should have had from the start).

I think it seems like big news from Microsoft because they update the 360 twice a year, only once this year. So hey have a lot of features to show off at once. The PS does several updates that aren't as big in smaller time frames. So their updates aren't going to be as impressive.

Give me one or two meaningful and working updates a year versus constant, meaningless and console bricking updates any day.

Sorry, the PS3 has its nice points but I think you are reaching there.

My point was not to counter what Payback posted. Microsoft's announcement are huge. But comparing it to just Home is unfair. There's more than Home that has been going on. Most PS3 owners aren;t that excited about Home either. They think it will be cool but would rather have better multiplaye support through the XMB.

The last firmware update was huge for the PS3 world. It gave it in game XMB. Microsoft isn't going to have that until the Fall update. In game XMB is the same as the current dashboard replacing the guide. The previous large firmware update upgrade the Bluray to 2.0 and improved the web browser considerably.

I remember a Fall update for the 360 bricking 360s. A patch came out in two weeks. Don't use the 2.40 firmware as something against the PS3 in that way because Microsoft had the same thing.

We all knew the fall update was going to be huge when Microsoft said they were not going to have a spring update. But why couldn't they have a spring update and add the minor features?
Also look at this year, only one update. There was no spring update. They could have done a small update like the last fall update to bring in the minor features.

I'd rather have the smaller more often updates. Look at the 360, it's next update is a year after it's last. Where as with the PS3 you get smaller updates and get to use newer features more quickly.

I will say the PS3 having TV and movies is a big thing. Yes, the 360 had TV and movies. But with the PS3 the content will be more portable. Who wants to watch movies and TV on a loud 360 if they have a quiet PS3?

Other than that Sony didn't mention anything we didn't already know was coming.

I think MS killed Sony today. Granted Sony loaded the gun and pointed it at their own head, but MS walked up and pulled the trigger for them.

FF13, Netflix, a better version of Home (and one that actually, you know, exists)...Sony is cooked. I'm waiting for the announcement of the 360 version of MGS4 and then its all over.

Last I saw of Sony's financial reportings (not long ago), they're bleeding cash from every pore. A lot of people are asking how Sony could let FF get away from them, why they didn't throw cash at SE to keep it from happening. Simply put, Sony doesn't have money to throw around anymore. The Netflix deal was originally being worked out with Sony, wasn't it? Combine that with the FF13 announcement and it tells me Sony is broke, or to the point where it can't secure any kind of exclusives anymore.

What a shame.

While Xbox360 owners are basking in the glory right now it still is a shame that the legacy that Sony had is now slipping away. I own all three consoles and was hoping that each machine would get a identity all there own. Xbox=Fps and shooters, Sony=rpgs and adventure games and Nintendo was strictly for it's own first party titles.

It seems this hope is dashed after yesterday. Sony really seems to be stubborn about securing exclusives that have been associated with the playstation brand for years now. That is a huge mistake. While Sony allowing GTAIV to be multiplatform made me shake my head. The recent announcement of FFIIIX really made my jaw drop.

Makes me feel like a fool purchasing all three this generation. Sony better step there game up big when it comes to games. Yes games and nothing but games. They need to forget about home and all that crap until they get a software library to anchor the machine with the user. MS is doing just that right now.

Fuck their legacy, fuck their arrogance, and fuck their annoying fanboys. Eat hot bankruptcy and enjoy it, dickweeds.

They've added nothing to gaming. Nothing. They've tried to steal as many innovations and they can and implemented all of them half-assed, and then smugly accused everyone of trying to steal from them.

If it weren't for MS, we'd probably still be playing PS2s and wondering if the Dreamcast had been on to something with this whole "online play" thing they dabbled in.

Kutaragi, Karai, Harrison...all of them arrogant, smirking douchebags that deserve this humiliation and beating.

Wow, somebody who seems to hate Sony even more than I do, I didn't think that was possible!

I've boycotted Sony products for years now (except blank CDs/DVDs... sometimes they are on sale, and I'm cheap that way). They've always been a bunch of arrogant pricks, who blatantly and consistently lie to their fans.

Personally, I don't know why anyone is surprised at what is happening. Microsoft is doing with the XBox what it has done with virtually every product it has ever sold. Their first releases are always buggy and less than innovative, but it allows them to get some experience in the market. By the time they hit their second or third generation, they typically own the market.

In 3 years from now, the DOJ will probably be filing a lawsuit against Microsoft for their monopolistic video game practices.
