Microsoft Launches Xbox Live Pipeline

by Tank| Published: Tuesday, October 10 @ 19:57:26 EDT
Microsoft has FINALLY released a great flash based interface to the Xbox Live Marketplace, too bad it has to be in your browser.

The Pipeline is a one stop web enabled catalog of what's on the Marketplace. At the moment there are pulldowns for Game Downloads, Demos and Game Videos, Themes and Gamer Pics, Media and Entertainment, Editors Choice and We Need Your Help.

All of the sections pretty much work the same way. When you mouse over one of the main categories you'll get some sub categories to choose from. Clicking on a sub category will produce a list of content on the left and a details window on the right. So if you clicked an item on the left, the window on the right will display information about that download, some pictures, rating information and links for more information.

Here's a breakdown of the sub categories:

  1. Game Downloads : Xbox Live Arcade, Game Add-Ons
  2. Demos and Game Videos : Game Demos, Game Trailers
  3. Themes and Gamer Pics : Themes, Gamer Pics
  4. Media and Entertainment : Movie Trailers & Short films, TV Music Sports and More, Gaming Community Videos
Editors Choice is a page were Microsoft tries to pimp their latest offerings and deals. Right now there's information there about the Live Vision Camera, Top Downloads and how to get more Microsoft Points.

Lastly there's a survey to fill out to help them improve this service.

I've spent a few minutes surfing around on this website and I have to say it really does fall short. It's easier to find stuff here than I think it is in the Dashboard. However things like Theme and Gamer Pic previews really fall short. If you're looking at a Gamer Pic Pack, you dont' see all the pics. The same is true with Themes, you only see one or two of the blades. This has been my #1 complaint with Themes and Pics since day 1, show me what I'm buying! So far this doesn't seem to be doing that. I'd also like to be able to preview the video's right in here too rather than download them on my Xbox360.

All in all this has great potential, take a look and send them some feedback so we can get what we want out of this feature.

I have spent some time with it and it seems like it has a lot of potential. I think they are just scratching the surface with what they are going to be able to do.

Very well done and useful, especially for something brand new, hopefully it will open up with many more features

I dont know if thats a good idea though really its bad enough having to play against modders etc without them being able to hack there way into other peoples GT`s.

I'm an avid Microsoft afficionado and an Xbox fanboi (There I said it), but this site is one of those "WHY" things. I do my Xbox-shopping on my Xbox, for the rest there's my retailer.

Why the site? WHY?

I sue the website a lot and always thought it was like that?
I havent noticed anything new for a long time now.

The only thin i use the website for is to see who is online and send messages from it etc as the movie quality is shocking the screen is only about 3 inches in size and all the information they have on there seems to have been on here a while before hand.

It would be cool if you could at least be able to download/stream or watch the trailer/videos type of content on XBLM from this website, why fill up your 20 gig gaming HDD with junk you will probably only see once when you could see it in your pc.

What is this service for? I don't have Xbox live so when I saw this in an email, I thought awesome, I can now see what I've been missing. Then when I get there, I can't do anything really, so maybe this is just for Xbox live people. Now I'm sad again.

Promising, but ultimately shortcoming (Score: 1)

This is a really great idea and really could've been great, but it ultimately suffers the caveat of not displaying things like gamer pictures or dashboard themes. Instead, you either have to navigate over to the page on Xbox.com or bite the bullet, be a consumer whore and hope that the content meets your approval. Could've been excellent but ultimately falls short.

futrure? (Score: 1)

Hopefully it is immature only because it is new and as they fill it in it will become more useful, or just useful.
