MTV buys Harmonix (Guitar Hero)

MTV, the cable channel, has yet again taken an off topic interest in something non-music video related. Buying Harmonix, the makers of Guitar Hero.

Why would MTV buy such a product? They announced their reasoning today, they want fans of MTV to have a deeper interaction in the MTV product.

MTV wants to promote a few of Harmonix's other software packages based around karaoke gaming and allow gamers to interactively game musically on their site. Of course, the MTV logo would appear on these musical games, which is always good advertising for a cable channel and website revolving around music.

People that buy games like Guitar Hero are obviously interested in music so the target demographic for MTV is in the palm of their hands. Harmonix is MTV's second music related purchase, aquiring Jamba, a seller of ring tones and other products for mobile phones for $188 million. The new aquisition of Harmonix was made for $175 million in cash.

I'd expect to see new changes in MTV's website over the coming months as they start to incorporate the ideas from their new purchases.

I've always wanted to learn Guitar but never really had the modivation. Turning it into a video game might get me there. Can't wait to see what MTV decides to do with this IP.

And to be honest, I don't have any modivation to do it as a video game. Don't know why, but real guitar works just fine for me. I'm more of an acoustic style guitar though, maybe that's why?

I've been playing guitar for about a decade too BUT...... YOU HAVE TO TRY THIS GAME. It is pure, unadulerated fun and if you crank up the difficulty it can be really challenging. The game experience is really satisfying: when you start playing well and hitting multiple notes in succession your guitar starts to sound awesome and the crowd cheers more. The songs in this are really well chosen and if you reach 'Star Power' you have to hold the guitar on the verticle and then it really starts to rock. I had no urge to try this game but once I did, I found that its just one of the most purely enjoyable, simple and fun games I have ever played. My .02

I'm always a little leary of some parent company buying a smaller company that's totally outside their realm. MTV knows music (or at least they used to). I just hope they let the game company make good games without too much interference.

It's a VIDEO game about MUSIC. Guitar Hero is immensly more music video related than the drivel they've been putting on MTV in recent years. I'd have to say it's a great step back to the musical roots of MTV and away from the pop culture crap they've been peddling for a while.

Now I just hope they bring it to the 360...

MTV already had a hand in the first Guitar Hero, under MTV Games Studio (not sure if they have any other games out.) RedOctane is the publisher of the game and they were bought by Activision last spring.

The big news with this title is that Activision announced that the sequel will be on all consoles, which is pretty much the nail in the coffin for my PS2. That and Spinal Tap is on the track list for the sequel.

As being a big fan of the Guitar Hero series, I'm very concerned. I really dislike what MTV, apparently a MUSIC station has done to themselves- turned into everything but music channel. They bought out VH1, and did the same thing.
While I do like the fact they appear to be trying to go back to music with this, I just don't know what they'll do to it.
Lots of great metal classics on the first one. I seriously hope MTV doesn't bring in some TRL'ish junk in the game.
