Little Big Planet Beta Contest

by BalekFekete| Published: Thursday, September 25 @ 12:39:30 EDT

Developers, Media Molecule, have been nice enough to grace our site with a handful of much sought after keys to the beta for Little Big Planet, perhaps one of the largest and most anticipated games on the PS3 to date. Well, we want to give them to our community members, so read on to learn how to win...

Little Big Planet™ is a tough game to describe. Part side-scroller, part adventure game, part world creator, all fun. Take all the typical side scrolling games we grew up on back in the day, and add in what may be the single most powerful world editor developed to date, and put it on a system designed to allow users to create, swap, and play together in the same universe.

In Little Big Planet, you play as a non-descript (at least out of the box) Sackboy or Sackgirl puppet. In a world with very sophisticated physics in place, you must jump, fly, or otherwise race from one end of a level to another, dodging and and all kinds of obstacles in your way. Make it to the end, and post up your time either globally or within your network of friends, and let the challenges ensue.

Enough...how can I win???

In a game built around users creativity, we want to know what world you will build first when the game launches? What will make your level stand out above all the other Mario World 1-1 that will flood the system?

All write ins (that at least put in a good effort) will be put into a random drawing and 5 winners will be announced after the contest deadline. The contest officially expires at 12:00pm EST on September 26th. You've got just over one day to get those creative juices flowing and leave a comment on this post to win.

Who's eligible? You must be a member since September 24th, 2008 to enter (no new sign ups, we're not looking for Ninja Looters). YOU MUST ALSO BE OVER 25 YEARS OF AGE!!! All the new people who are just signing up will be REMOVED and cannot receive the beta. Don't waste your time.

Well my idea for a level is actually a real life game I used to play with the older kids way back, when I was a just a little perma kool-aid lipped bugger . I'm a bit weary so please bears(rawr) with.

All you need is a graveyard and a bunch of flashlights and a willingness for adventure!!!!.

It works best to have 2 teams. If you can't find enough flash lights just pretend your a pants-less ghost! The other team can only Ghostbust you with hugs and kisses and then once you got caught you had to go into the "ghost Dungeon" man oh man,I remember that van.

In fact, I'm pretty sure I spent practically my whole summer in that thing. Whenever I think about that summer I mostly draw a blank. All I can recall is that I hated to sit down... It's almost like I repressed all that fun. Oh well.

And finally I almost forgot. Me and the neighborhood kids used to call it
" Wake up America! find the ghost of Heath Ledger and his magical watermelon pants"
... if thats not your thing
I supposed you could call it
"Hey, that guy just took a ghost kid into his van, lucky ghost kid!".

I would love to incorporate an unbiased political theme into a level, by placing well known symbols, such as donkeys and elephants into the level. Perhaps, in part of the level you would ride the donkey and then be potentially squashed by the elephant, if you are not careful. The point of this level would be to turn such a serious thing into something that can be thought of in more of a light hearted manner. This is just one of the many creation ideas that I have. Hopefully, I will be able to expand upon them soon with the opportunity to participate in the beta.

THANKS in advance for the beta key! I look forward to playing LBP!

...but this is what I had drafted up in case IGN.com ran with this same type of contest:

Level title: War Torn

Concept: The concept for my initial level will be a trip by Sackboy through a series of battlefields as a war rages on. There will be transitions from one war to another. For example, the first battle you will face will be circa Civil War times, with a pair of armies/soldiers facing off against eachother, firing muskets. The player will have to time and dodge over the bullets as they fly through the air. Then, further on, we get to a World War II area and a set of crumbling buildings. Through holes in the building, bombs are falling, which need to be avoided. Then, fast forward to a time in the far future, and you'll have spaceships flying down (on ropes ;) lancing the ground with laser fire. Finally, one bomb will split the ground open, dropping the player down into an abyss where sack-angels and sack-demons struggle - with fireballs and little lightning bolts flying here and there.

The level (theme) will be based upon older looking sackboyz(men) (ie:beards/attire) playing a level from the throw back era. Would like to show that even older sack(boyz) can play video games. If possible would like to include some younger looking sackboyz and make it harder for them to compete a level than the older ones (hopefully can biasedly weight characters)

I don't want a token cause i don't have a PS3. Just doing this for fun.

The level I would design would be the one I remeber the most and it wout be Pit fall. Yes I know why that slow game, but if you think about it this could be a cool level. Resign it with a new over hall of course. So that way in case you fell down you had the varios spikes and arrows flying at you. With the hole creator to move blocks back and forth like the holes opening and closing could be lots of fun. What will be underneath should be a mystery to all.

So you start out on a platform to hold two sacs. you swing over the hole to land. A head of you is another hole, but an option to go low road or high road. taking the low road is darker and scarier, while the high road has holes to drop you to the low raod or maybe there is more than one low road. But that is the start and gist of my Pitfall My way.

Phrases you could say to friends -
"You just go my sac wet "
"Quiet hitting my sac dude before I unzip your sac women"
"Behind every good sac is another sac behind them"

My level idea:

To go through the dangers of a house. Dangerous? Think of the kitchen... You have to get across the fiery stove! What about getting behind the TV with all those electrical wires and dust bunny's lurking at every corner? What about outside, where the lawnmower could cut you into tiny pieces. Work your way through the house with your friends to get to the roof of the house. Dodge the lawnmower, climb up massive counters in the kitchen by hanging on to the dog's tail and slingshot your self to the top of counter. Get up the stairs and in to the attic where you can try and figure out a way to get to the roof, where the finish line rests!

Start off with some rocky cliffs from CONTRA, segwaying into an eerie nighttime Castkevania graveyard, and then have sackboy take on Samus' domain Metroid-style. Then I'd switch directions a bit and go vertical with some cloud jumping from Kid Icarus and Mega Man 2 (trying to create a bow and arrow and cool Mega-man inspired "weapons" for Sackboy to throw. Finally we'd get horizontal again with some PitFall and/or Jungle Hunt vine swinging and end it all off with the Mario World 1-1. (Make the player work for desert!).

As such a user, I was initially intrigued by the site, and spent considerable time perusing the site and was compelled to continue to return to it.

Because of this stipulation, however, and that my comment and entry was deleted, this is the last time I will visit this site. Ever.

For my 1st Little Big Planet level creation, I have decided to make it a spiderman-man level. 1st I'll set up the background, make it very susburbian, full of sky scrappers, lights and bridges(if possible).

The rules of the level will be to race through the level with a venom-look-alike sackboy and a spider-man-look-alike sackboy. But there is more to it then just racing. there will be other factors that come into play...

I have in mind to attach ropes or strings to each building,, so sack boys running by can swing and advance. I'll also make sure to put plenty of obstacles so the swinging can be a bit challenging, some times there will be dead falls. Ill also add materials on which sackboys can actually climb on to, sections where they can only advance by taking falls and gras the strings attached to structures.
Now all this competition would be nothing without prizes which will be littered through out the level.

Now at the end of the level Spidey and Venom will actually have to team up against a gigantic mechanized robot from hell. The robot will have sections that can be climbed(ala Shadow of the colossus) and there will also be sections that will be hazardus to the heroes(electric charges, freezing mists, flaming torches) so players will have to work together to bring down the behemoth robot. Right at the top of said robot will be a button to push, which will deactivate the demon for good. The teamwork will come into play as one sackboy will have to hold on to the other while swinging right into the robots "safe areas". Once the thrown sackboy reaches this areas there will be buttons that temporarily deactivates the robots defenses allowing the other sack boy to climb the robot without harm, this process will repeat until one of them reaches the top.

Other ways to slow down the monster will be to use catapults charged with rocks and other objects that will stun him if hit in the right spot.

The grandprize will be a (hopefully) nice detailed scarlet spider sack boy, and the giant robot himself.

There are a ton of things still in my mind but It would be pages of writing, so I rather just flourish my creativeness through the game.

I hope I get a chance at the beta, but if not, this level will be ready to go 2 weeks after the release of the game. Others to look forward to are a Lionking themed level, a Star Wars level, and a Metal Gear level.

First, a haunted world, filled with a roller coaster ghost ride, spooky spiders, webs to swing from, full of booby traps, and devils with pitchforks. Starts off amusing and kinda dorky, like a ride at the fair, but then it actually gets scary when things jump out of nowhere. Or, a winter ski resort, with downhill skiing (my bunny hill would not be an easy one), and snow dogs pulling you furiously through a dark blizzardy night. The visuals could be stunning, just like driving on a dark night when the headlights catch the big snowflakes. (Nintendo always does snow worlds, but never ones at night.)

I had 2 ideas I was going to start off it. One was a compilation of old-school games... something that may go from a simple Mario theme, to a Sonic theme, even to a Pong-type of game, and so on.... all on one level.

The second idea I have is completely original. I have probably 30 sketeches drawn out for neat puzzles/parts to the level and how to connect them together.... truthfully, I have so many of them now that I'll probably have to split it into multiple levels for time's sake.

I sure would love a key!

I'd create a level that included both above ground, and underground cave areas. Within the cave areas lava, bottomless pits and environmental stuff would hinder the player - but above ground more enemy based obstacles like diving birds and robots would try and stop the players. I'd also add certain paths that require more than one player to access, to give the level a bit of replayability with differing numbers of players.

The level that I would create would definitely be a mix of all of the great Sony Exclusives throughout the years.
The beggining of the level would have Sackboy start as a little, cute Solid Snake [From MGS1] on the Island Of Shadow Moses, snowing. And if there is a way, Sackboy can be sneaky and hide behind some moving objects from enemy soldiers. If the Soldiers spot you, it's game over.
He/She then would advance to the next part of the level, which would be Olympus as the character of Kratos from God Of War. I can be creative and make this any way I want, because I don't think in the first two GOW's there was a level that takes place in Olympus just yet. Little Sackboy will be dressed up just how the DLC would be, or if I can customize him, I would make it better, if I have the right clothes and tools to work with. So the level would have Big Cyclopses and Cerebus's while there would be lightning in the sky and lava on the surroundings to show that Olympus is being destroyed from Kratos's wrath of hatred for the gods. And Mabye a little boss battle with Zeus?
The last part part of the level would be having Sackboy in the world of Resistance: Fall Of Man 2! But Sackboy wouldn't be your normal, cute and innocent Sackboy in this one. He would be a Chimera! The level would take place in the ruins of Chicago, where other Chimera and Humans are shooting at eachother in the background and in front of you. There would be a little mini game where you would have to dodge some bullets from the battles in the background, mabye. But don't worry, the bullets won't be superfast, but they will take you by suprise ;]
There would be giant Tanks trying to run over you, you would have to maneuver around the map to dodge them, because some tanks are bigger than others, so you would have to find your way around them.

And that's what my first level would be like :]
I just want to know if there would be a way to change costumes in-level..

The first level I will create in Little Big Planet will be vertically based. I've always enjoyed the scope of levels in games that start at the bottom and climb up to something. Of course this will be after I've gone through the training levels and what not, this will be my first real attempt at a level.

Rather than having a lot of room to move horizontally, this level will be TALL. I'm thinking maybe a bell tower or something of that sort, climbing up ladders, swinging across ropes, using centrifical force to fling your sackboy up to a higher platform. Of course there will be lots of fire that you'll have to work your way around.

Well, I'm looking forward to making it :)

There is an enormous golem, a tower giant, a mobile fortress which roams the land and whose body contains prison cells for little sack boys and girls who have been "naughty". This is the plight of the land. My level would contain this gigantic beast with a body built to contain prisoners...a walking prison.

In the later years stuff from my education (medicine), so doctor tools, etc.
Also it would have an empty baby-room to represent my first child, which was born dead.
The music would contain songs from these periods which meant a lot to me, my wife could play them on a piano to avoid copyright infringement :)

I don't think it would be a very challenging level, but still, for people who (want to) know me it would be great as it would summarize my life until now.

R-Type has one of the all time best levels of any video game ever. My best friend Paul got a TG-16 and R-Type for Christmas and made me make my mom bring me over that day. After a tense car ride over and a few hours of TV Sports Football we popped in R-Type and were like "WOAH" and "RADICAL". The graphics! The music! The soul crushing difficulty (game difficulty, how I miss you! *sniffle*)! And that was all before the third stage.

I was convinced, before we even reached the third stage, that R-Type was the Pope of Chilitown. If you've played it you know exactly what I'm talking about. The entire level consisted of your itsy bitsy Arrowhead fighter against a Bydo dreadnought of Brobdingnagian proportions. You had to circle the ship, time everything just right, look out for that pink and blue criss-crossy beam! all while dodging a ocean of bullets. Like I said, one of the great video game stages ever.

How I'd go about making this contraption boggles the mind but I'd love to give it a shot. Or maybe I'll just make a TV Sports Football level.

I'm hoping to be able to create several stages, but in order to make them, I'd need to get my hands on the beta key in order to understand the full concept of the creation tools. Here's two excerpt of my ideas.

The title of the stage would be "Little Big History"

As its title implies, this stage is pretty much a travel through time. The level will start off with Sackboy facing an obstacles of having to get through a volcano full of lava and molten rocks by taking advantage of dinosaurs that are standing around. And of course, who can forget the devious T-Rex which Sackboy must conquer before reaching a stone wheel which he must rides to reach the a new stage. The following stage will consist rampage mammoths, cavemen, and fire logs that Sackboy must get through to reach a wheelbarrow that will lead him to a colossus temple. The temple is actually located on top of a colossus and Sackboy must find a way to get down to the bottom of the colossus. He will be assisted by the Greek gods along the way to help him reach a boat at the foot of the colossus.

Using the boat, Sackboy will then travel to a a giant pyramid in which he must conquer the maze and the mummy before being able to ride a camel to a colosseum, where archers are shooting arrows to prevent Sackboy from reaching land. Rocks are being rolled toward Sackboy. And lion will be biting and scratching Sackboy. By the time he reach the door of the colosseum, he will be greeted by an army of legionaires with Julius Caesar standing behind the army. Sackboy must find a way to reach Julius Caesar and defeat Julius, which will open up the door to the colosseum. Once inside, Sackboy will be greeted by a Trojan Horse. He must find a way to get to the top of the horse and control the horse in order to open up the gate ahead where a group of cavalry await him.

While riding on one of the calvary, all the horses collapse and the knights died when Sackboy reaches the land of plague, in which he must dodge the poisonous plague to reach a panda bear. The panda bear will take him to an oriental place with fireworks and gunpowders that Sackboy must dodge. When he reaches the great wall, he must climb over the Great Wall to be greeted by cannons and Napoleon. The rest of the level will go in order of the Elizabethan era (Renaissance), the American revolutionary, the Civil War, the Wild Wild West, the industrialization, the Last Samurai, WWI, Great Depression, WWII, Space Race, Computer era, and last but not least, the release of LBP.

My other stage will be called "Little Big Medicine"

This stage is the human body of a man. A man is going on a rampage and need to be cure by reaching his brain and defeat a virus. The stage will start off with Sackboy trying to get in the cup without getting hit by the man. Once in the cup, the man will drink the cup from exhaustion, which will lead Sackboy to the stomach. From there, Sackboy will have to fight his way up to the brain by getting past the acid in the stomach, the compression of the intestines, the timing of the diaphragm, the sharp ribs, the beat of the heart, the air, water, and particles coming through the throat, the mucous of the nose, and finally the virus that's attacking the brain. Once the virus is killed, the man is no longer on a rampage and Sackboy saves the day.

But he wants to give them only to people already belonging to 2o2p for a certain amount of time. Of course, the outside world gets wind of this and all kinds of people suddenly sign up.

To keep his sanity and thereby the integrity of 2o2p as a whole, he has to visit site-page rooms and either lock them down or get rid of the angry non-eligible people that has registered solely for the beta-keys.

So angry are these registees that they also have taken hostage genuine members and Doodi has to free them. Be doing so, he gives a Beta-key to the rescued genuine member.

Win-conditions will be:
1) A certtain amount of pages locked;
2) A certain amount of angry registees banhammered;
3) All Beta-keys given to genuine members.
