Ken Kutaragi OUT

by TANK| Published: Thursday, November 30 @ 11:41:50 EST
It looks like Sony Corp. is just as displeased with the Playstation 3 launch as the Playstation fans. In a shocking announcement today, Ken Kutaragi has been removed as President of SCEI. He will be replaced by Kaz Kirai who is the current President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America (the American division). This shake up will be effective on December 1, 2006.

Ken Kutargi will continue to be involved in Sony Computer Entertainment in the capacity of Chief Executive Officer but will have more of an oversight power rather than day to day dealings.

Kaz Hirai, in his new roll as President of the the global SCE Group will bring his strong leadership skills and experience to the day to day operations of growing the Playstation 3 business.

This isn't a bad thing for Ken Kutaragi, in fact it's just the opposite. He has been promoted to Chairman and Group CEO over the entire Sony Entertainment Group. Kaz is stepping up into Ken's old job but Ken still has the power over everything as Chairman of the Board. Ken has stepped into the only position in the Sony Entertainment Group that could be considered a promotion and now he the THE MAN. He won't be as concerned with the day-to-day stuff because he now has more to oversee.

Page three of the linked press release has an organizational chart that shows Ken as top dog.

Several promotions have happened in Sony, moving the PS3 people away by giving them promotions but basically just giving them a window office until they die/quit.

In Japan this is how they deal with people.

Sony can't ever say anything bad about MS ever again.

Do you mean nobody knows facts about Kens move or the PS3 in general?
Its hard to praise a company thta brings little to the table and talks big. As a gamer, there is not a huge reason to buy a PS3 right now.

X360 - more games for less money
PS3 - less games for more money
Wii - less games for less money but different gameplay

As for Sony being on their last leg, given FACTS, they will be in 3rd place this generation. Add difficult programming for developers and you have far less game support in the long run.

If I buy everything Sony says and discard facts I'm sure I will come to a different conclusion.

i don't think it's so much anti-Sony as it is serious disgruntlement with the uberf*cked up release. i mean, NO ONE thought it could be worse than the 360 launch, and Sony made M$ look like they were virtually heaven-sent brilliant with their abyssmal launch. Sony deserves to get @ss-ridden for their handling of the PS3 launch. For a company that's been in business as long as Sony has and saw how poorly M$ handled the 360 launch, they could have done an incredible release if they realy wanted to, but they chose to lay a turd instead. (not the console itself, but the launch procedures, number of consoles actually shipped, etc.)

Nah, I love Sony actually. But overhere in the Netherlands, Sony is such a powerhouse that people will even buy a wet fart in a three days worn thong from a sweaty fat lady if it has Sony printed on it.
It's ridiculous, really.

Besides, they've become very arrogant by putting out a console that'll cost an arm and a leg to obtain it, since the Netherlands will not get the cheap models, just the super-duper premium one.

I'll sit this one out with a soda and bag of pop-corn if you don't mind. The mighty S will fall on this one.

There does appear to be a noticeable level backlash against Sony this console generation. Personally I think it was brought on by Sony themselves due to their over confidence (some would say arrogance) in the superiority Playstation brand and in ignoring the player base in several areas (such as price and expectations that people will wait for the Playstation 3 indefinately or purchase it regardless of any obvious issues it may have).

Frankly I'm happy to see Microsoft wading in with the XBox 360 and shaking things up. The development tools with the 360 and community tools created as part of the XBox live platform have opened up opportunities that would not have been available otherwise. I think Sony could stand to be knocked down a peg or two.

What I would not like to see is Sony completely knocked out of or give up on the console market. Consumers are best served by strong and thriving competition. A single company wielding too much clout, be it Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, or whoever results in stagnation and fewer innovations in the market.
