Halo 3 Clan Support And Longevity

by nogame22| Published: Wednesday, August 22 @ 15:09:15 EDT

We got in touch with Frankie at Bungie and asked them a few questions about rumors on Halo 3 clan support and how they expect to keep Halo 3 running as long as their last franchise title.

How does Microsoft expect Halo3 to have the longevity of Halo2 without clan support?

Halo 3 is going to have far more longevity than Halo 2, thanks to new features like Forge, Saved Films, player traits, custom game variants and online co-op. Clan support not only had little to do with Halo 2s longevity, but in fact proved quite unpopular relative to other matchmaking types and activity. That said, Bungie.net does plan to increase support for clan-like activities in the very near future. More news on that later.

Does Xbox Live have anything in the works as a solution to remedy the lack of "clan support" for Halo 3?

Xbox Live continues to upgrade features and specifications. It is possible that community functionality will be improved in the future. This question may be better answered by the Xbox Live team.

Why has a solution taken so long when we have already had three fall/spring updates?

Frequent, low-impact updates are one of the luxuries of Xbox Live, improving features and functionalities with little impact to the seamless player experience.

What is the issue with extending the FL past 100 people?

This question may be better answered by the Xbox Live team.
Needless to say, our next job is to find someone on the Xbox Live team and see if we can fill in the gaps for the areas we're still questioning.

However, this explains why "clan support" was left out, it's just not a top selling feature for the Halo franchise.

Before you freak out, remember, 2old2play is a highly advanced "clan based" community, so consider yourself in the minority for features like this. With so many buddies that love the system it's hard to understand why others wouldn't... but those "others" are probably a larger demographic than we are.

I believe people stopped playing clan matches in Halo 2 was because everyone was freaking CHEATING in that game, no one wanted to risk being modded or any other stupid shit, and clan matches were maybe I guess the easiest to cheat in. In halo 3 where there isn't going to be any cheating so they should bring it back!!!

Exactly!!!

While it would suck not having a clan within Halo 3 to attach your name to, its also not a gamebreaking feature. Clan MM sucked, and the clan feature just became an extra 100 friends when you are playing Halo2.

Lets put the spot light on MS and demand an updated FL that lets us have friends by game, social circle, or what ever... I haven't played much H2 after the beta and my FL was consistenly full from all the other MP games like GoW, R6, Shadowrun, Chromehounds, and ect.

I don't think Bungie should be put in the spotlight on this matter... The 360 is an awesome machine and it sure can handle an advanced FL...

I understand your intent with this interview, and appreciate it, but given the answers you did receive, it did seem as though you were barking up the wrong tree, and the whole article seems almost pointless.
Did you consider pointing out to him, though, that there are other games available for the 360 that DO support clans?

He answered the questions that I gave him and for those that he couldn't he referred me to xbox live.

Also I did this over email through a PR person so I didn't have a chance to talk to him and shoot more questions at him when he couldn't answer something.

In the Hardcore Christian Gamers blogcast, MajorNelson said no XBL Clan support except through Game API. Frankie just nixed that.

Judging by Frankie's guarded and curt responses, he knows that nothing is in the pipe for now. It really does seem like something is up between Bungie and M$.

Thank you very much for contacting Frankie.

Frankie's stock answer totally disregarded the Community aspect of Halo 2 Clan support and what the extra 100 FL slots meant to us. Especially after the 360 came out. This means no Clan XBL API support.

Looks like I was on target all along with my hyping the lack of Clans in Halo 3. I so hoped I was wrong. :(

Sure, we will survive. It'll be by our creativity not theirs. We'll not be thanking them for having to go through this either.

Frankie was obviously just spouting the company bullshit with this. Clans are a huge part of the Halo community and functionality from within either the game or the dashboard needs to be there.

Sure the Clan MM stuff wasn't that great but having that special Clan friends list is invaluable for gathering a party for a good time. The wording 'clan-like activities' makes me think that M$ is trying to get away from the term Clan for whatever reason.

I could care less about clan support in H3. Maybe I am the minority. I also keep my FL to a minimum. I don't play a lot of customs because half the time it's with people that spend too much time dicking around and not following the "rules" of the custom game.

"Forge, Saved Films, player traits, custom game variants and online co-op"

If he thinks those features are going to make HALO 3 last as long as HALO 2, he is kidding himself.

I couldn't care less about Forge.

Saved Films will be amusing but I don't see me playing this game for 3 years because of it.

Player traits? So what?

What good are custom game variants if it is going to be harder for me to connect with the HALO 2 clan that made custom games fun?

Online co-op will be great but, like saved films, that isn't going to keep me playing for 3 years.

I'd trade all of that for my clan.

This pretty much backs up what was in the podcast. Bungie seems to have been told they can not add clan functionality to the game, and therefore are not. Bungie and Halo have been the corner stone of the Xbox platform and will continue to be the franchise hallmark. I feel that Microsoft will step up and give the community what we are looking for. I think that Microsoft has plans for this and due to the demands the community has issued they will be doing something or at least releasing an official press release in the near future. I do encourage everyone to make sure your voice is heard though and keep at Microsoft for updates to the friends list area.

Are others reading it this way? And how did GRAW 2 have clan functionality along with previous and future 360 games?

Unless Bungie's way of implementing clans somehow won't work with the way the 360 currently does clans???

There's definitely some finger-pointing going on, but I agree with Selden -- something will ultimately happen that eases the initial difficulties we'll have. Personally, I think it's time to start figuring out how we'll work with what we have. Keep the pressure on MS, certainly, but it will probably be up to us to do something about it in the short term.

The above is a link to the description page of a handy little PC based program that uses login credentials from Xbox live to pull the respective user's friends' list and display it, on a PC, in buddy list format similar to AIM.

Now, granted, this program does not give clan information, but I'm posting it merely to show the possibilities that are out there, especially with the clan (or lack thereof) support being shown for Halo 3.

So, while I don't personally have the programming experience to compile something like this (and most of you probably don't either), that's not to say that it is impossible. Obviously. So as you're checking the M$ site for updates and looming over Bungie's press releases, maybe you shoot a word to a son/daugther with programming knowledge...something along those lines. Because if necessity is the mother of invention, all that's really left now for clan (or expanded friend list) support is the initiative for someone with the knowledge of how to make things like this work to actually go and do it.

Keep your eyes open, I'm sure a solution will present itself thanks to the tireless efforts of those who pay prime dollar to use the services that they as end users most often end up enhancing. I don't believe something like you and I want in this respect is going to come from M$ or Bungie. So put out the call. It never hurts to ask.
