GoW: Clogging The Tubes?

by CodeMonkey| Published: Wednesday, December 06 @ 11:08:04 EST
Gears of War is reported to have increased sales of Xbox Live Gold Memberships by roughly 50% and increased XBL traffic...

The hype of Gears of War was definitely over the top and in many of our opinions the game was "good" but not worth that much hype... or was it?

Not only did it take off on Xbox live and overtake Halo 2 as most played game but it drew a huge number of new gamers out of the woodwork. These "new gamers" probably owned an Xbox 360 already but didn't own a gold membership.

Microsoft paid up front for the hype machine but it seems to be working out in their favor ten fold. New console sales, new XBL subscribers, and heavy game sales. The network utilization on XBL has also increased by 80 percent.

Unfortunately, other games were left in the dust because of the shadow of this hype machine. For instance, Call of Duty 3, Tony Hawk Project 8 and Viva Piņata also arrived at a similar launch date - no love for them.

It might have been wise to slip the dates of these other hot titles by three weeks or so when people started beating Gears of War and realizing the multiplayer networking wasn't all that hot.

Apparently Senator Ted Stevens didn't know how popular Gears of War would be when he decided to cite a few products that "clog up" the "internet tubes." Perhaps the makers of Gears of War knew this as one of their achievements "A Series of Tubes" rings true in this case.

That game is fun. It is a shame that it is in the shadow of GoW. I just hope that this game gets the love it deserves.

around the same time should have been released before or a couple of weeks after gears dropped.

It may not have a great lobby system...but people are getting around that and still playing it anyways.

i'm with you, the lobby sucks and so does the constant loss of network connection to the host, etc. i have ruled that out to be "booted by host" so i may be wrong. i bought a half dozen games right at/around launch of Gears, (SCDA,Tiger,Rumble Roses, TombRaider, SvsR07) and only Gears has really gotten any love in the past month..

I'm really curious as to if Gears has held on or not. The game has some pretty major flaws. IF you're a first time player you probably won't notice all the little issues it's got. But when you've put in 500 some games and climbed the rankings like myself and a few others have, you start to see all the problems and they get really frustrating.

Well I must be one of the few who isn't completely taken in by Gears. I have it, I've played but I to me it certaininly doesn't live up tot he hype.

I find the MP game play worthwhile but the limit of 4v4 seems a bit constrained after GRAW (8v8) and RB6 (7v7 and soon 8v8 after the patch).

the biggest turn-off for me related to GoW is all the grey tones. I don't care if the textures are superb if all I look at are shades of grey, gives me a nasty headache after about an hour...

too bad, I really wanted to like this game...

Sprinkle a little of the color from Viva Pinata in GoW and I'd be all over it.

It is refreshing that something has finally unseated Halo 2 on the leader boards.

I have both games, and CoD3 is better in my opinion. GoW is a nice DOOM remake and all that, but its lack of color is sorta depressing - even though I 'get it' in terms of game setting and why it's like that.

CoD3 is more intense, contains more action and has a killer multiplayer (when I can get into a game that is). Overall, I think the game has more potential than GoW but it wasn't marketed as GoW was so by the time people realize how kick ass it is the phase will be gone and some new game will be out.

Viva is also awesome, but in a totally different way. It's one of the most creative games to see the Xbox 360 title and was done professionally. I was assume THIS game was going to have all the hype since that's all they were talking about six months ago then the "message" just faded away.

I agree that a lot of the other games should have held back. Games like Call of Duty 3 should have come out earlier or a month after Gears. But I also think Gears is just a great game. I like that it's multiplayer isn't cluttered with 8 on 8. 4 on 4 seems right to me. This game has me more excited than Halo ever did. I'm more interested in Gears of War 2 than Halo 3 although I will be picking up Halo 3.
