Gears of War Map Pack outs Microsoft in a Fib

by tank| Published: Tuesday, May 01 @ 14:45:08 EDT
Gears of War will get another set of downloadable content this week on May 2nd. The new DLC however outs Microsoft in a small fib as well. First off the new content will be a map pack for 800 marketplace points (we’ll talk about that later), which will get you the four brand new maps listed below.

The Maps

Bullet MarshM: In this Kryll-infested swamp, an old generator still powers the area lights. A few stray bullets could easily knock out the generator, leaving combatants to fend for themselves against the Kryll.

Garden: This overgrown and crumbling conservatory still has a working fertilization and pesticide system. This system can pose a serious hazard to anyone who ventures into the greenhouse without first venting the air.

Process: Teams must fight for control of this subterranean Imulsion processing plant, still active despite the cessation of the Pendulum wars.

Subway: Timgad's Central Subway station used to serve as a central hub for commuters. Now the tunnels are crawling with Locust.

While four new maps does sound great, 800 points for just maps seems a little too greedy to us. Maybe it's because we are old and fickle, but if it added some new weapons or new versus modes, then 800 points might seem fair. Then again, if you want to wait until September you can get them free. Um woot?

There is more to this story then just 800 mp points though. Major has consistently led us to believe that someone other than Microsoft sets the price of marketplace content. We hear this every time over priced downloadable content is released and the community goes into an uproar (Guitar Hero 2 Tracks anyone?).

Well in the case of Gears of War we know that Epic wanted the content to be FREE. Epic’s Tim Sweeney went on record several weeks ago on the 1Up podcast stating that Epic and MS were not agreeing on whether the DLC would be free or not.

So how is it if Epic wants this stuff free yet they hit the Marketplace at 800 points? Sure, one could argue they will be free in four months. Problem is in video game age, four months means dead and buried for 99% of games out there. There are a few jewels that buck that timeline like Halo2 and maybe Gears of War, but four months is a ridiculous amount of time to make fans wait to get content that SHOULD HAVE been free. Your thoughts?

Unless the developers, map creators, testers, MS certification team, server administrators, marketers, etc. etc. all work for free then I'm not sure why everyone has their panties in a bunch about having to pay for something that wasn't put together for free. Maybe Cliffy doesn't mind doing it for nothing but the folks at MS still have people and time invested in getting it to your hands and that costs $. It took a significant amount of time for the Halo 2 map pack to become free and I don't remember everyone complaining about that. $9 - $10 isn't that much to pay based on the hours of entertainment you get from the product. You can't go see a movie for that and it only lasts 2 hours.

Agree 100%. Like someone said before, Microsoft is the publisher of this game, so it's up to them to set the price. The main reason I wouldn't D/L the Guitar Hero II content, is because the songs were on the first GH. Nothing new. It's not like Red Octane had to go back and work on development for those all over again. These maps are 100% new, and will be worth the price.

Hmmm Epic sold millions of copys of GOW at $60 a pop Xbox live has 4 million plus subscribers (silver and gold) and 70% of those have downloaded stuff from the marketplace and don't forget the $50 yearly fee for gold subscribers. Anyone who feels sorry for MS and the big game developing companies or think they are fair in charging for extra content when it should have been included in the original retail game is a fool. Thats like saying the oil companies are fair by jacking up the prices for gas and heating oil when they are recording multi-billion dollar profits.

Last I checked we lived in a capitalist society. Don't want to pay for the maps? Fine, don't pay.

But that's not really the issue is it? The issue is that MS has gone on record saying that they do not set the price of the content. This release makes it seem likt they do.

I would agree, especially considering that the last round of maps was free. This is a business and and needs to be be run like one if the company is going to attract the top talent it needs to continue producing games along the calibur of GOW.

While unconfirmed, I think there's concensus that the whole "Cliffy B. Blog thing / 12 map preview" was a hoax. Hotmail address, picture of Zelda in the preview pic, no correlation to maps mentioned and those just released, not to mention a third-party blog site and not Epic?

Goofy scam.

Good news, we'll have some new maps on Thursday and they sound excellent.

There's a fundamental difference between Gears of War and Guitar Hero. With Guitar Hero, Red Octane sets the price for DLC because they are the publisher. In that case Microsoft is more or less the retailer and sells the product for the price set by the publisher.

With Gears of War Microsoft IS the publisher so they have the right to set their price. It's not really an apples to apples comparison.

That all said, I don't really feel that bad paying $10 for the 4 maps. In all honestly I've gotten far more than $60 in value out of the game so far and as much as I continue to play, being part of Art of War and participating in the 2old2play ladders, I will get more than $10 in value out of the 4 maps in the pack.

They definitely sound different and interesting, which is good. I just hope they don't suck :)

Exactly!! There is no "fib" on Microsoft's part.

MS sets the price of content for games they've published, EA sets the price of content for games they've published, Ubisoft sets the price of content for games they've published, etc.

Mind you, MS sets the pricing "structure" for the Marketplace and I'm sure takes a cut. So, I'm sure they want eveything on the MP at cost... can not take a "cut" of zero.

Quote Tank= Well in the case of Gears of War we have it on record that Epic wanted the content to be FREE. Even recently Cliffy B posted on Epic’s Blog that there are 12 new maps done for Gears of War and all will be free.

“I will sit down here and discuss the twelve new maps to be released for a little game I envisioned called Gears of War. These maps will cost around a total of 0 Micro$oft Points a piece. In the end, we worked it out. Idle threats of Gears slipping to PS3 (HA!) worked in our favour.” (Cliffy B.) (end quote Tank)

To believe that the quote is attributed to Cliffy B is ridiculous! It was posted on a false IGN.com blog that was a complete hoax. Does anybody even check references for members submitted news items? Epic’s Tim Sweeney did go on record several weeks ago on the 1Up podcast stating that Epic and MS were not agreeing on whether the DLC would be free or not. See your original post:

Honestly, I don't usually have a problem with a company charging for additional content. There are a few things to point out though. First, if the developer of the game wants the content free and Microsoft wants to cover their own costs, then the content should probably be cheaper than 800 points since that is roughly $10. Especially since the largest cost should be on the end of the developer and not Microsoft. Second, given the fiasco with Microsoft's DRM setup, any cost seems unjustifiable for me. I mean, the way it currently sits, we pay for the content, but if we have to replace our system because it's lost, stolen, damaged in a flood or fire, or suffered from a hardware failure, you end up only being able to use the content when logged into the account that originally downloaded. For families with multiple users, this is not fair to legitimate customers.

i think every once in awhile they need to offer free stuff to people. especially for people who buy points alot. birthday points would be great and holiday points. stuff like that. and just some free stuff once in awhile would be even better. i dont mind paying, but if they dont start coughing up more free stuff they are going to screw themselves in the end.

See the subject of my post... any suprise MS wants to make a buck or 10 where it can?

MS has built a means by which developers invest IP (intellectual property) and time plus deal with any backlash of functionality or shortcoming but MS is both the gauge of market, gauge of value, govenor of product releases, distributor, head of marketing and head of sales. I applaud them. Talk about innovation and next gen gaming / content, they've done that.

I too wish all the content I wanted to pull down from live was at no cost.

However, occassionally we succumb to our hobby/interest. You speak with your wallet folks. Its your number 1 asset when it comes to market influence. You can write a letter, post on boards and blog about it till your fingers are numb... but if you unite in mass and refuse to pay the prices, it will send a signal.

Combine a well timed effort with certified notification to the proper folks at both Epic and MS - and your impact will have a unified voice.

In short, as long as there is a demand, they will continue to supply and fuel the market. If MS sees next to no downloads of Gears maps until they become free, then millions of downloads - they'll get the message.

Remember, this is all as new to us as it is them. We are making the history, we are setting the stage. The more you buy "maps" and "Themes" or "weapons" the more they'll continue to produce and charge for them. MS is just feeling out the market to see what it will bear. Xlive is a money train for them that they simply didn't expect. Its performing better than all forecasts and the public loves it. In many ways, its up to us - the gamers - on how it develops.

Your purchases are as powerful as your votes for office. They might be more powerful. Think about it.

Cheers,

Tac

Yes, Major HAS SAID someone other than Microsoft sets the price of the marketplace content. The PUBLISHER of the games set the price of the content. So who published Guitar Hero? Not Microsoft. Who published Ghost Recon? Not Microsoft? How about some of the other DLC people have complained about? Probably not microsoft.

"Well in the case of Gears of War we know that Epic wanted the content to be FREE. Epic’s Tim Sweeney went on record several weeks ago on the 1Up podcast stating that Epic and MS were not agreeing on whether the DLC would be free or not. "

Unfortunately Epic isn't the publisher, they're the developer. We know who the publisher is and if you don't know, I'm not going to tell you. Look at the box.

This isn't a conspiracy. This is one example of overpricing that we can all point the figure at microsoft for, the others aren't.
