Gears of War Free Maps 1/10/2006

Microsoft has announced that Epic will kick out 2 new free maps for download this week on January 10th.

Much to the surprise of 2old2play, the new content will be completely free for download and will consist of 2 maps called Raven Down and Old Bones as well as a video hosted by Cliff B (yippy?). Raven Down will center around a Raven Helicopter crash in the middle of bombed out city streets. From the looks of the screenshots, the ruble will provide a ton of extra cover.

Old Bones is set inside what appears to be an old museum and takes on a much darker tone then Raven Down. The middle of the map looks as though it will sport some nice battles around the giant statue.

The map pack is sponsored by the Discovery Channel (huh?) and they will also be giving away two million Microsoft points as part of the promo. Points will be given out in 400 points increments via www.readyaimfire.com from January 13th-15th.

How about a update for all the bugs and also the fact that the pyhsics of the weapons is wrong to be honest i think this game will sit on my shelf untill everything is sorted as i hate multi player due to all the bugs.Oh well it was good while it lasted

I read somewhere that there will be an auto update for GoW first, then the 2 maps. So, here's hoping the auto update is going to fix some of the annoying glitches!

Auto Update starting on the 9th, and here is what they are addressing:

• Fixed aspect ratio distortion when using VGA cable with 4:3 displays at resolutions higher than 640x480
• Fixed voice issue with new players joining Player Match games in progress
• Players can now get the Achievement for "Dish Best Served Cold" when using Troika turret to kill RAAM
• Fixed rare situation where host could loop countdown and never start match
• Fixed rare situation where players could get stuck after chainsawing in multiplayer
• Reduced Grenade Tag melee distance
• Enabled “Strict” NAT check on host to prevent possible connection issues
• Optimized server browser queries to return results more quickly and prevent scroll bars from hiding quality of service icons
• Reduced number of possible revives in Execution to match Warzone
• Removed host name from Ranked match server browser
• Disabled security cameras in Ranked matches
• Ranked matches now require balanced teams (3v3 or 4v4)
• Increased penalty for quitting a Ranked match to -50 points
• Added additional cheat detection code
• Additional housekeeping updates

Hmmm, looks like we will no longer be able to find each other while hosting ranked matches - guess I won't be getting any of those ranked achievements now!

It seems this game still lacks a way for host to change rounds. I like the balanced ranking systems but I also dislike the idea of getting rid of host names.

Unfortunately for GoW, there's another title in the collection now that is grabbing my playtime: Rainbow Six Vegas. Until they patch the MP side of GoW, well, it's just not going to compete.

also because I was a HUGE supporter of this game and still want to love it but the glitches and lack of a lobby system made me not play it as much. RB6 takes up my time as well, although part of me is still holding out hope Epic fixes the lobby thing. They have to realize what a big omission that is.

I'm not surprised at all to see Epic giving away content for free. They've been doing this since I bought the original Unreal Tournament for the PC. They really know how to treat they're customers. See you all on the 10th!!
