FIRST TAKE: Grand Theft Auto IV (360, PS3)

by Jonathon Howard| Published: Friday, May 09 @ 05:51:12 EDT

I’m about 12% on the completion level and I’ve been playing Grand Theft Auto IV for about 6 hours and I thought I’d share some of my first impressions before you get the full blown review.

The first thing to say is “Wow, this game looks beautiful!” Rockstar has done a phenomenal job in making Liberty City real and alive. A couple of times I’ve just sat back from the controller and let the action unfold around me, and the amazing thing is it does! People walk by, knock into, and interact with each other. Crazies stand on the corner and rave about lizard people taking over the world. Watch people wait in line in front of clubs, chatting over how great this or that thing is. This is the most impressive thing about GTAIV so far, it is what keeps me playing, I just have to see all of Liberty City.

Which brings me to my first gripe with the game. Just as they have in the previous three games, most of everything is locked away. In order to see the entirety of the game you have to play the story missions. I’m really beginning to hate this about games - if I spend $60 to explore a giant fake New York City, I want to be able to explore all of it out of the box, not waste 20 odd hours on boring fetch missions in order to see the far shore.

Speaking of the missions, nothing so far has stuck out as new. These seem to be the same missions I played in Vice City and San Andreas, except this time everything is shinier or conversely grimier.

My biggest complaint, though, is with the controls. Is anyone else having trouble moving Niko around? Moving the character through tight hallways and across rooftops seems like steering a super-tanker through molasses; this has been a problem with the GTA series since Grand Theft Auto III, and each iteration I have hopes that the controls will be responsive and light and that I can move my guy around like the athlete he is supposed to be. Especially frustrating are the fighting/shooting controls. A great deal of the time I am swinging or shooting at nothing, despite being locked onto a target! The driving controls are somewhat better, though I question some of button placements.

So, what do I have to say so far? My complaints are largely the complaints most of us have had with the series since it came out on the PS2, and they’ll be largely forgotten once I get back into the swing of things, and once I’ve unlocked the entire city, I don’t know if I’ll feel compelled enough to go through with the story-line. With the amazing city I’ve been given, I might just lose myself in exploring it!

Come back in a couple of days for my outlook on the multiplayer.

My biggest gripe is how difficult I'm finding some of the missions.I've had to retry some close to 20 times to finally complete it.
I've quit trying to complete the No. 1 mission with Brucie.I just cant control the car well enough to win a race.

You don't need to drive very fast to win. If you'd done it 20 times, you should know the turns pretty well. So, just get in 2nd place, stay a couple of car lengths behind the leader, and when you are heading into the final turn, overtake the leader, make the turn and floor it.

I agree, drive slowly but accurately, brake early, oh and try this: push LB right after the starting countdown, at the beginning of the race while all the cars are bunched up. You'll spray all the cars with plenty of machine gun fire, hopefully popping some tires and setting them on fire.

The game looks great and if you love sandbox style games then this is a must have.

It's not a real sandbox. You have to repeat missions over and over to move forward. It's pretty linear, just camouflaged well.

It IS a sandbox game. You can start the game up, and do whatever you please. The missions are provide a storyline yes, but nothing stops you from getting in a car, driving to any point you wish (just load up a Party Mode MP if it's not unlocked yet) and do anything you wish. That, by defination, is sandbox gameplay.

If you drive around you will find many missions that have nothing to do with the story.

I think Jonah must really, really suck at playing games. I am by no means great at said video games, but I've only failed a mission 2 or 3 times total. And I still haven't used any cheats.

I've been loving every minute of this game. The driving is fantastic, Niko controls really well, the city feels alive. The aiming/lock-on mechanic works really well. Only once, ONCE in 40 some hours of playing, did I have trouble shooting who I wanted.

I loved this game when I first started playing it, then it got very repetitive ( go chase someone here, kill them , then drive 20 miles back to original destination ) . the driving in this game is like your in a hovercraft...it sucks ! and most things you have to do in this game require driving ALOT!.

I still like the game but, we are on the 360 not the ps2....vary it up a little and tighten the controls please!!!

While I partially understand your first issue, I believe letting people explore without the game isn't what was intended. I think part of idea is to allow a player not to be overwhelmed by their environment. I know my major issue when I got when I came in was, this seems so expansive will I cover it all. Now with all three islands open I am starting wonder, will there be more. But I just as easily could of seen myself being lost in the big city if it would of force me all around at first. I know this may not be the same but if you want to I belive if you start mulitplayer things you can explore the city, I could be wrong I haven't been on the multiplayer yet because I was solely interested in the character development and had no interest in being spoiled.

On the 360 I have had no problem with player movement I have only had two hinderances when it comes to player movement. When fighting those above and below you it is tough to get a lock on and not shoot a floor you're not aiming at. Other than that I find it is alright. I do find that the one thing they have never improved is vehicle movements. I am actually quite glad they have taxi's to drive you around now because the car movement is just awful. I can manage but it is not even close to the most enjoyable part of the game. And because I am an achievement whore, the races you have to do to get the achievement piss me off more, but I am happy to be done with those now.

As far as mission variation, I feel all of these have some kind of reality behind them, so I don't know what you expect them to do but I have run across some great missions. I personally enjoyed the one that dealt with the bank. If you don't watch the cut scenes and get into the story you have no vested interest in the story as there isn't one for you, but so far I like picking up the friends and listening to what they have to say they all add background development to characters.

**** A Tip for the races ****

First speed isn't everything. Going around turns hit the brakes before the turn so you can make the turn and accelerate through it. If you run a slow race but don't wreck it works out pretty well that you will win. Remember sometimes luck isn't on your side. To win 20 races I had to do 23, the three races I lost all were lost on the third lap, when something caused me to flip my car. And for those who need help off the line instead of going to the yellow arrow go around all the cars in and reverse to the one in front. It automatically forgoes the countdown and starts the race. So pretty much at the start you have 3 vehicles out of commission for a 5 seconds or so, and you are no the first car not the 6th. Also trying racing with a Comet, Turismo or a SuperGt. The Banshee is alright I just like those other three more.

Here's my review of the first 12% of this partial review...

It wasn't a complete sentence. The partial sentence that I did read really wasn't that interesting. It didn't convey much emotion and really they were words I had seen before in other articles.

Stay tuned for 12% of the multiplayer review!
